AMD's next-generation high-end graphics card, based on the "Vega" architecture, was showcased at an event in Sonoma CA, earlier this week. While the architecture is being debuted with the Radeon Instinct MI25 deep-learning accelerator, a prototype graphics card based on the silicon was exhibited by the company, showing Vulkan API gaming.

AMD was pretty tight-lipped about the specifications of this prototype, but two details appear to have slipped out. Apparently, the chip has a floating point performance of 25 TFLOP/s (FP16), and 12.5 TFLOP/s (FP32, single-precision). On paper, this is higher than the 11 TFLOP/s (FP32) of NVIDIA TITAN X Pascal. The other important specification that emerged is that the card features 8 GB of HBM2 memory, with a memory bandwidth of 512 GB/s. This, too, is higher than the 480 GB/s of the TITAN X Pascal. It remains to be seen which market-segment AMD targets with this card.

This article was updated on Dec 15 to accommodate AMD's request to remove all info regarding the demo system, the shown game and its performance, which has been put under NDA retroactively.

Might be the cheap and chipped version of Vega to win over 1070 and get close to 1080 in DX11 and match or surpass 1080 in DX12 and Vulcan. GDDRX and a good vfm positioning could ve enough. And RX490 isn't a dual core RX480. Good to know that after so much speculation. Vega 10 is the core inside RX490. Vega 11 is the big core to go after Pascal Titan.

Thanks! Nice find...

But.....what about the other 99% of games not using Vulkan? I'd like to see a more complete picture... but that is hinting at good news!

Yep, they also said it was the best case scenario for the card (Doom and Vulkan)... so......... let's just get more information. :)

Even if it performs like a 1070 in dx11 and a 1080 dx12/vulkan as long as power is sub 250w and its priced accordingly it'll be a good buy.

Depending on the price, sure. And you are likely right.

But for this thread, I would like to see more than just [insert company here] cherry picked results. AMD is a hype machine that continuously falls flat.... so please understand the concern. :)

There is a high possibility I'll be again going with AMD. While I absolutely adore my GTX 980, it's not running Killing Floor 2 as smooth as I'd have wanted. Don't get me wrong, it's very high framerate at Ultra settings, but it's just not as smooth as I want it, meaning I'll be going with something more powerful soon. Vega being so close, there is no point in rushing GTX 1070+ just yet. Gonna wait for Vega and see then. I really play KF2 a lot so I'm willing to justify the purchase for it alone.

It's for servers. They have fans on full blast through the enclosure. The CPUs are passive, too.

All we can do is hope at this point. I am probably going to dump my 480's when it releases so tired of dealing with crossfire yet again.

I replied to this notion of yours before - Vega 11 is (according to most sites and leaks) the smaller chip. Just like Polaris 10 (RX 480) and 11 (RX470 and 460). Other sites also suggested the price will be similar to the GTX 1080. Look at AMD's past releases now.

Don't get me wrong, I want Vega to come in at DX11 equal to a 1080, but far superior at DX12 and Vulkan and be £100 cheaper.

EDIT: if Vega matches 1080 and AMD price it the same, AMD become absolutely complicit in the ridiculous pricing of gfx cards. But if Vega beats the 1080 - they can sell it for MORE..... not good.

I form the same opinion on pricing. Currently toying if I should sell Fury X I have, but considering the ridiculous price I paid in March 16 (£250), I don't think Vega will give me the same performance for £ ratio.

the numbers only indicate the design order, so polaris 10 was designed before polaris 11, and vega 11 was designed after vega 10, its not any indication of their segment or performance

Its an early prototype running with unoptimized drivers from Fiji so theres quite some untapped performance to gain till June.
Plus all case vents were taped to keep people from taking pictures from the insides so the card might be even throttling a bit....

Cool - point still stands. All leaks bar one i saw point at Vega 11 being smaller. FWIW a 480 to Vega 10 jump is too large, Vega 11 would fit in below 10 IMO.
