I have two Samsung 4K 60Hz Monitors w/ FreeSync and a 4K TV hooked up to my desktop. I currently have a GTX 1060 3Gb which I got for $184.99. It's a great value but I'm playing Witcher 3 at 1440p and it ranges from 38-47 on Ultra. I'm looking to improve this so I found an EVGA GTX 980 Ti for $299 shipped which should hopefully get me ~50-60 fps on most high-end games. My question is, Is it worth it to get a Fury for $239.99 or a Fury X for $299.99 so I can benefit from FreeSync at roughly 10 fps less than 980 Ti performance?

I could wait for Vega but I I think it will likely come out late in December and then benchmarking, reviews will take a bit of time so I think I'd be looking at mid Jan at least before purchasing. Also, I'd like to keep my budget at $300 so I don't think I'd get a brand new Vega card for that price. The best I can hope for is a Fury X price drop or getting a good deal for a $300 1070 around Christmas.

Depends a lot on what games you play and are likely to get in the future. If eye candy is important as in HD Textures and Mods, I think in order to be future proof you will need the 6GB VRAM.
The Fury has improved in a big way with driver updates to surpass 980Ti, but even with that massive HBM pipe, 4GB is still 4GB.

IF your GTX1060 can still net you playable framerates, leave it be and save up for big VEGA! I'm fortunate in that I have a pair of R9 290X and a pair of GTX Titan 6GB which are holding up well in games but I'm waiting for Vega for that single card gaming performance @3440x1440, and yes, my monitor's Freesync as well.

Witcher 3, Fallout 4, League, Fifa 17 for now probably more single player games and sports games in general all at Ultra/1440p.

$300 for a 1070? good luck with that, can't see that happening anytime soon, I'd personally go with the fury x at the same cost of the 980ti if that was the options on offer, freesync or not but obviously that's an added bonus http://wccftech.com/amd-r9-fury-x-performance-ahead-nvidia-980-ti-latest-drivers/

According to your link it doesn't seem to pull ahead, just catch up really. Also, I've noticed that the Fury X seems to perform a lot closer to reference cards than the EVGA 980 Ti FTW, I'd compare that to the MSI 980 Ti Lightning they have there and you can still expect a 10% performance boost over the Fury X at 1440p but no FreeSync. It's just hard for me to value the "smooth feeling" since I've just seen examples of it. 1070 seems to be a quieter and more efficient 980 Ti, but I think the FTW SC edition pulls very close to the 1070 in performance (within 1-3%).

IF your GTX1060 can still net you playable framerates, leave it be and save up for big VEGA!

I can manage on my GTX 1060 3Gb but do you think the RX 490 will be in the $300 price range and be at roughly 1070 performance, or any of the Vega cards, if so I think that would be the ideal option. I just really don't see those being in the $300 price range around release in mid-Jan. If I end up having to wait a few months till Easter for a price drop I think I'd rather just splurge now since I can still return my GTX 1060 3Gb to Amazon.

It's 4% ahead on that review unless I missed something and bear in mind this was before the Crimson Relive drivers as well which also raised general performance 5-7% so I stand by my comment in that the Fury X would be my 1st choice out of those two, but hey, you'll ultimately get what you feel more drawn towards regardless :toast:

Vega is only considered a 1st half 2017 release. I have a horrible feeling it won't be out for a while yet.
I'd be patient though. It would be silly to jump the gun right before Christmas time. Could get sales soon after.

Oh, as far as 980ti, you need to use the fastest custom overclock reviews. Most 980ti cards hit above 1400mhz. 15-20% above standard review scores.

You're right but I think finding an EVGA GTX 980 TI SC+ FTW Edition for $299 shipped is quite a deal.

The "After graphic" at 1440pThe after graphic at 1440p shows the Fury X lower than the aftermarket 980 Ti at 100% and this review for an XFX Fury X shows that it's generally at or below stock 980 Ti cards. Even with the driver updates, the after market 980 Ti should still hold an advantage. I suppose you are right that's closer now that before.

That was over a year ago, AMD cards have improved over time so that's not after driver improvements... it should be negligible by now but like I said, you'll ultimately go with what you're going to go with regardless of mine or anyone else's sentiments, maybe just hang on to your 1060 for now as it's not exactly a slow card and just wait and see what will be when vega 10 and 1080ti etc are released, if anything prices of current cards should come down anyway :)

You're right I am tilting towards the 980 Ti because it seems like a really good deal but Fury X is creeping closer and closer for the same price and I get the FreeSync benefit on my monitors.

I would love to wait for Vega, but GPUs on realease are all gonna be like $450-500 and then drop slowly. I doubt I'd rush in and buy one even though RX 490 may be the best fit for me (~1070/980 Ti performance w/ FreeSync)

@toxicpeashooter where do you live? Small things like that can help. I know that EVGA B stock was selling GTX 980 Ti's last month for $300.

My opinion get the Fury for $239.99 or a Fury X for $299.99.

The 4GB so far for me has not been an issue :) . For example I have seen Lords of the fallen show VRAM usage of 6GB at 1080P on RX 480 8GB, I'm using the same settings in that video but at 1440P with slightly better to similar FPS :D . VRAM usage is shown at 3.9GB, so it is being all used but I've had no issues. I have not checked frame times compared with lower settings or resolution as the game plays very well. 1440P with texture quality only set to high = 3.5GB and TBH I see no loss in rendered image, I still use very high as wanna see game crash or an issue, which hasn't happened :D .

I had a Fury Tri-X prior to Fury X, AFAIK the Nitro is very similar cooler and the XFX Fury Triple Dissipation. They are nice quiet cards, with slight fan profile modification I easily had GPU at 55°C. Unlocking cores on Nitro is pretty rare from what I've seen on the OCN unlock thread, but a Fury is not all that much behind a Fury X. My Tri-X unlocked to 3840 SP and was on a par with genuine Fury X in benches I tried when clocked the same.

Fury X you gain FreeSync which I have found handy, Fury vs the 980 Ti you basically gaining FreeSync and cheaper purchase price for gap in performance. Last time I checked the gap closes as resolution increases. So if you plan to be at 1440P I reckon you won't be missing a whole lotta performance by going Fury/X.

My thinking on waiting on Vega is:-

a) all talk is 1st half of 2017, so you could have at least another 6mths waiting time.
b) the price of Vega is gonna be close to higher end of pricing if it performs as expected.

So Fury/X represents very good "bang for $" IMO and no premium for variable refresh rate tech, well you don't even have to buy new screens as you have them already :D . Even when you come to sell Fury/X if you decide to go Vega I doubt you'll make as big a loss as say owners that bought Fiji cards when they were $500+.

Thanks it's a great way to look at it, I think I'm actually gonna keep the 980 Ti because I think the resale value would be the highest. I'll likely use this card as a stop gap until I find a good deal on a high end Vega card in like 6 months to get for the future. In the meantime this will get my all the performance I need w/o FreeSync however.
