HyperX Announces the New Cloud Revolver S 7.1 Flagship Headphones

After the spin-off from Kingston, HyperX has only been releasing gaming hardware for a few years, expanding its lineup throughout all kinds of gaming peripherals, from keyboards to headphones and mice. The Cloud Revolver S, announced at CES 2017, are the biggest, baddest headphones in HyperX's range of offerings, attaining flagship status.

HyperX is aiming for comfort first and sound second, driving 50mm drivers and plug-and-play Dolby 7.1-channel surround sound through a setup with memory foam cups and a wider steel headband.





The Cloud Revolver S runs off a single USB port, which means it won't need an external audio box - though that may mean your expensive sound cards will possibly go to waste through such a connection. HyperX is boasting that this is the first time a gaming headset has plug-and-play surround sound. What that means for sound quality remains to be seen (and a 7.1 sound setup inside simple headphones hits the limits of physics pretty early), but if it tops out the Cloud Range of headsets in quality as well as price, HyperX is likely to win a few more fans. The Cloud Revolver S will be available in March 2017 for about $150.

The Cloud headset plugs in via usb therefore it becomes a 'usb soundcard' - no analogue jacks needed/involved

The 7.1 aspect of the headset is just a surroundsound emulation that the USB connection and its software allows it to provide.

Hm, I guess I was looking the non-S page product (the S doesn't seem to be listed on the official site yet).
But I still don't think it has anything to do with 7.1 sound.

Wth does that even mean? They simply take several channels, drop the base and bunch everything else together. The end result will be slightly better than stereo of you're lucky, but it still doesn't have anything to do with 7.1 sound.
And that goes for Razer, too.

It means its all to do with the software. The software becomes a 'layer' that upmixs 2.1 to 7.1 to give it a sudo 7.1 effect. Its all a bit of a gimmick at the end of the day. But I have a 5.1 speaker set up that i game on and have NEVER resorted to using emulated surround sound on my Fidelio X1 headphones even though my creative soundcard has the ability to upmix all channels to surround sound.

It can do... Its kinda like DTS II or DTS Neo -- you can get sudo surroundsound through just two speakers. Though how effective it can be can quite often be down to your room size. For headphones though It doesnt quite matter. Ive tried the surroundsound effect on my Fidelio X1s when i got them with my creative SB-Z and ive tried the Asus Xonar equivalent of emulated surround sound and i cant say that i care for it much.

Ive never had or tested a USB gaming headset though so i cant comment if they sound similar or better.

it plays with frequencies and imitates the delays and directions by playing with the Bass. You know how the ear has a hard time pinpointing where Bass is coming from .. it uses that to fake 7.1 .. its not very effective but it has a better soundstage than stereo .. I myself prefer multidrivers or an actual surround system. I never buy emulation.

Bingo! Of course I can't wrap my head around it, there's no way to "emulate surround" with two speakers. That's all I'm saying, tyvm. If there is, please send me a link, I'd love to read about it.
