SilverStone showed us the ECM22, a neat accessory that provides M.2 slots to machines that lack them. The half-height PCI-Express 3.0 x4 addon card gives you two M.2-22110 (110 mm long) slots with PCI-Express 3.0 x2 wiring. One of the two slots features SATA wiring, which simply relays connection from a SATA port on your motherboard. The card doesn't have any native logic of its own, and as such NVMe booting support will depend on your motherboard BIOS supporting it. It could still come as a boon to setups such as video-editing rigs, in which the creative professional could want as many high-bandwidth storage devices as possible.

If it uses NVMe what the hell does that have to do with SATA?

There's no logic on board so I think nvme support is up to m.2 card and motherboard bios to support it in first place(it's more like a dumb port converter). And yeah there are sata m.2 cards too, just use it as power source for one and plug it to mobo's sata slot like any harddrive.

Btw btarunr are you sure that both supports pcie? Earlier version ECM20 supported only sata drive on the upper slot and only pcie drive on the lower slot.

Well, i see a lot of "m.2" cooling solutions like the MSI, Asus and now Silverstone being praised, and being used as a revolutionary feature on some motherboards. M.2 gets hot, that we know, but most of these so called "m.2 cooling solution" are poor quality (aquacomputer makes a decent one) for the most of the time. I have one of these guys attached to one 950 pro 512gb, and i got tell you, its near silent, same performance than the onboard m.2 on my sabertooth x99, and its SUPER frosty, even on heavy workloads, this cheap chinese solution does the job more efficiently and has a better overall look (with a black acrylic backplate, it looks fantastic) and active cooling from the blower. Cheap, efficient and has active cooling. Silverstone, make your homework!

(sorry my english)

Says the slots are x2 wired. Does that mean that a m.2 x4 SSD (ie. 960 Pro) will not run at full x4 speeds?

Yep, but it doesn't matter for 960 pro as its peak sequential is about as fast as 2 lanes of pci-e 3.0.

Definitely not a future proof solution by any means.

This product doesn't make sense. On most boards, using a video card and any other PCIe card will cause your PCIe x 16 to split into x8, x8, so a dual M.2 card could run two "ultra"
M.2 slots (PCIe 3.0 x 4) off it's allotted 8 lanes. This turkey only has one PCIe 3.0 x 2 lanes, and one SATA, wasting most of the available bandwidth.

Why not ?, i find SATA2 fast enough for the most part, it only matter to the nerds of the computer world.
