I'd like your opinion on which CPU to buy.

This rig will be for Gaming mostly. I'll going to cool that CPU with a custom water build. There are so many choices since the arrival of koby Lake processors, I'm a bit confused.

Should I grab a Intel sixth get cpu because the price just dropped? Or get something more recent?

I would say, do not skimp on cores, especially when going multi GPU, thats my personal opinion. There will be a lot of wasted potential in these cards. Go for a 6 core and an X99 motherboard.

You'll likely want more pcie lane flexibility when using 2 cards, more so than cores and sli (really it's clocks anything above a quad for best sli scaling). I'd go 6850K and x99. Make sure you overclock it to get the most out of those 1080s.

That out of the way.. I assume you are rocking 4k to require 2 1080s?

I am a current user of an X99 with 1080SLI, and honestly....... for the money you would spend on 2 x 1080's just buy the TitanX - P or wait for Ti. Or, as a third option, buy 1 x 1080 in the meantime and save your money for the more powerful single cards coming out. SLI is a mess currently (meaning most the games I play don't support it and don't seem to plan to), so I am always gaming off a single card.

Yet another dual card user, grab a single 1080 and wait for the ti or just get a titan.

but a Titan X (Pascal) is ludicrously priced. a new X99 mobo/ram/CPU combo kit would probably work out a lot cheaper.

alright then,

WHICH CPU would you recommend (intel) if I go with gtx 1080 sli?
and

IMO.... For SLi your current set up wouldnt be rediculously bad either. you have a fast quad core. I would consider getting 16GB of Ram at 2133 or 2400Mhz to help keep shovelling the data between your graphics cards and the rest of your system around. Wont make much difference to Single GPU usage but SLi is a lot of data being transferred and may help alleviate some minor bottleneck in the subsystem/interconnect.

Keep the same system for a single 1080, Consider upgrading to 16GB of ram of the same speed (1600) but its all down to your own personal usage. Some games load up a hell of a lot of textures and mods that take up tonnes of ram

Read between the lines bud...

6850k/x99 for dual and 6700k/7700k z170/z270 for single.

my hesitation comes from the 6700k vs 7700k benchmarks...
they seem to be pretty much the same performance. The 7th gen apparantly overclocks a bit higher (like 200-300mhz more) but everything else seems similar.

In fact, I'm thinking it'd probably be wise to take advantage of the price drop on the 6th gen material (cpu/mobo) stemming from the 7th gen release

+1.. didn't even see haswell there... no need to upgrade!!

I would get faster ram than 2400mhz for sli however... in fact, regardless I'd rock ddr4 3000-3200 cl15. 2133/2400 is JEDEC. And while with a single card it won't improve things, it will with dual.

my bad guys, I should have mentionned the fact that I sold my previous PC a few months ago, Ive been gaming on a weaker system for a little while. (I was doing way more hours at work and needed some money for a while, now money is good and my work hours have come back to normal)

I should have updtated my sys specs. I'm on a old build I had made in the past. fenom 1100t with a radeon 7950 3gb. the upgrade is going to be reallly gooooooood for me lol.

Anyway, just get 7700k/z270. Pricing is right about the same...

What about waiting a month to see what AMD brings to the table with RyZen? I think it could be worth the wait...

Personally, I wouldn't be willing to invest in any SLI set-up after what people have posted in this thread about SLI support going down.

Since you starting from scratch, and don't have a system to upgrade, get the newest/best you can afford. i7 6800k 6 core with a X99 MB that meets your connection requirements, newest Titan if you can afford it, otherwise a single non-reference 1080 or wait for the 1080ti to be released, 16 GB of DDR4 3000 RAM, and a good high-end 650-750 watt PSU would be my suggestions. Something like this- https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/FNFNBP

Alright last question:

Say I go for a single GTX 1080 or eventually 1080ti

Why go got i7 6800k or i7 6700k I thought those were only ever good if you do heavy streaming or 3d rendering photoshop and stuff

I only do gaming (mostly)
Everything I read point towards the i5

Why do you guys think an i7 is better?

Because you have the budget for a 6700k/7700k. As time moves on, you will want more threads as games will start to take advantage sooner than later. When you look at it, the difference is $100 in a $1K+ build...

I would only go x99 if you go SLI and that's only for the extra pcie lanes so it doesn't Bork your sata/m.2 storage ports avaialable.

Another way, you are willing to drop 1200 on gpus, still haven't told us why you needed that horsepower through 2 threads........, but now that single is here you won't spend $100 on the i7?

Right now i5 6500/6600k offers great performance and right money for it.

If u want more futureproof and to be cover with more threads go with i7 6700k,get 16 gb ram 3000 frq or higher to work fast.

I've not said or done anything final, like any wise man, I check and double check mate.

I'm considering sli only because I like having mucho frames on a high refresh rate monitor. At the same time I'm very aware of the poor support for sli. So in my head it's either gonna be GTX 1080 sli or a single GTX 1080 until the 1080ti comes out at which point in I'll either get one ti or get 2x and switch to a 4k monitor... We'll see

I only suggested the 6800k/X99 route for future proofing reasons. Like Earthdog said, it's not that much of a price difference when you were talking about $1200 on video cards alone. Get the best/newest you can afford. Going with the 6800k/X99 is only about 10% more than a i7 7700k/Z270, and only 15% or so more than going for an i5.

i7 6800k/X99- https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/FNFNBP
i7 7700k/z270- https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/83QWKZ
