I recently received a new power color devils red rx480 8gb along with a whole new system. The specs are

  • Intel Core i5 6th Gen 6600K (3.50 GHz)
  • 8 GB DDR4
  • MSI B150M Bazooka Motherboard
  • 2 TB SATA III 7200 RPM + 120 GB SSD
  • High Power 600w HPG-600BR-H14S
  • Windows 10 Home 64 Bit
The computer runs very well, except when I try to enter a game. For example Witcher 3, the game loads perfectly fine and I enter into the game. But within 2-3 seconds of being in the game/moving my screen turns a solid color and I get a low buzzing noise in my headphones. It is a new color every time. No shortcuts work and I have to manually reboot system every time. This happens with all the other games I've tried. I tried to set all the settings in Witcher to low and the game worked fine, but still didn't on ultra. The card should be have performance the should run ultra fine, but it doesn't want to. I haven't touched any settings in wattman, etc. I have Crimson 16.12.2 installed. Everything should work fine considering its a new system. Please any help??

Sounds like power supply issue to me. When lowering graphics settings, power consumption drops too. Have you got some decent PSU to try if it works?

Nope, had a gigabyte rx480 and worked fine but then switched to the Power color. Do you know if this one in specific consumes more power?

Even if it does the difference should be too small to matter. Why did you change graphics cards by the way?

It hasn't been uncommon for the powercolor devil cards to be bad. Sounds like it is failing. Could also be a bad PSU, that brand isn't exactly known for being the best.

The GB card was turned faulty after a few days. Got a rma for it and they were out of stock so they sent the powercolor devil back instead. Guess I just have some back luck :\

Or... Your PSU can't handle it and both cards are actually fine? ;)
Could very well be, although first wouldn't even send a signal to monitor. Going to buy a new psu tomorrow and install it and see how it goes, ill keep updated ;)

Still a little questionable though about the psu. I found someone who is having the same problem as me with a 750 watt Rosewill Capstone 80 plus gold. The tip of the card is also touching the hard drive case but not sure if that matters.

There are no contacts on the end of cards. If the backside was grounding out sure, but that would be a no post smokey fire situation.

Problems under load aren't uncommonly a psu. For curiosity underclock the ram and see if the issue goes away.

The steps you take to find out whats the issue is trial and error. Change the GPU with another similar GPU and try. If it works, your GPU is broken, if not, something else. Then try to exchange something else. And so on. Until you know whats up.

okay, think i narrowed it down but i need some help since I'm fairly new with computers. I opened up msi afterburner and turned down memory clock, core clock and temp limit and the games ran fine, although on a little lower fps. what does this mean?

GPU could be defective, but you still need to verify if the PSU is not the reason, as it could very well mean the PSU can't stand high power consumption, thus the downclocking of your GPU prevented the PSU from shutting down the PC once again.

It's the PSU. Why would two different card not work when you try to play games?

The first card experienced a different issue, but it might still be related to the PSU. I'm going to go purchase a new PSU tomorrow, since my system needs one regardless and ill troubleshoot from there if problem is still occurring. Ill keep you updated. Thanks.

I will take guess and say that you got a black screen when you put stress on the first card. I know that I'm wrong but wanted to add that. :)

I got excellent performance with first card until second day with it I got zero signal from hmdi, vga, dvi connection, so I couldn't even test if the psu could handle it :)

Your psu killed that card. It cant handle the loads demanded from the entire system. Get a reputable unit from seasonic, xfx, enermax, antec.
