Xbox 360 wireless controller lag,delay in racing games (gear shift)

When i play a game like need for speed shift 2 uleashed and projectcars i have trouble shifting gears with my xbox 360 wireless controller

I use lb and rb
It either won't change gears or it often goes 2 gear op or down and make it impossibel to have smooth gear change when i want to, need to

Does anybody know a solution to my problem ?

Can't be related to need for speed being an old game, project cars is not that old, it's like the game doesn't wan't to resonse they way i like it, as if i have set it to semi aut gear change where it just often goes 2 gear up or down

That could be a sign of failing switches. Failing switches can either not send the signal at all or send two signals when one was requested. It is always the same button that screws up? Does it happen in any other games with that button?

Are you playing on computer or console?

With controllers, you usually want to use a sequential gear box so it does exactly what you tell it to with button presses. Inject AI, it's just like auto--it shifts when it wants to rather than when you tell it to.

pc, i always use lb and rb for gear change, and lt and rt (that can be used for throttle) for rear view and handbrake

I only have problems with gear change

I'd try disabling that semi auto shifting feature then and see if that takes care of.

I use manual gears with aut clutch

Just putting it out there but:
LT = -1000 to 0
RT = 1000 to 0
LB = pressed
RB = pressed

I doubt you did this but if you rebound LT functions to LB and the same for right, it could behave erratically simply because of how the controller is programmed.

I did try it whit other games, project cars is not the only game where i have the problem

I tried finding a program to test if a controller is responding correctly to inputs but I can't find one; however, I can make one based on the contents of this article:

Would you be willing to run a program of mine that will show what your controller is sending to the computer? It should be able to definitively tell you if one button press is generating two events in the computer which, in turn, would indicate that the switches are defective. I have two controllers (one has a defective left joystick) here I can test it with so making and testing locally shouldn't be a problem.

it's getting really frustrating, getting to a corner in projectcars, in goes lets say from 4 gear it goes to 2 or even 1 (instead of 3 gear)
and the car spins and i lose some positions, other times i want to go from 3-4 gear and it goes into 5 gear, than gear down and it's back to 3 and than i might be able shift into 4 gear

It's like i have to have max rpm before i change gear or else it might change more than 1 gear up/down and as if it thinks i want 1 or 2 gear if i break hard as i want to lower my speed where 1-2 gear might be perfect, but it isn't and the cars spins and i lose som positions

I'm willing to buy a xbox one controller if it would solve my problem (supportet in projectcars since you can chose xbox one controller, not the xbox 360), just don't know if there a general problem with the xbox 360 controller or a driver i can update

Extract before running.

Learned some things:
-Triggers are 0 to 255 for each of them, not -1000 tp 1000 as I stated above.
-Thumbs are -32,768 to 32,767 for X and Y.
-XInput works via polling the state of the controller. Most games will do this every frame. My attached program emulates running at 60 fps (polls ever 10ms).


Windows has always automatically installed the correct driver for the Xbox 360 remote controller for me.

Do you have a busy USB flash drive or something on USB that's taking most/all of the bandwidth? I think that could cause issues with polling the controller. All the buttons work the same way so I'm surprised you're only seeing the issue on two buttons. Even then, two shoulder buttons having the same issue is fairly unlikely unless there's a communication issue and they're all doing it...it just isn't obvious that it's happening on the other buttons...


One thing you could try is unplugging everything on USB that you don't need to run the game, only the controller. If that fixes it then something is messing with the USB.

My logitech wireless rumblepad 2 lasted about 8 years before it started to show it's age

My program is showing that? Then yeah, definitely a defective switch. When you're not touching it, none of the buttons should signal that they're pressed.

The only thing you can really do at this point is make sure the shoulder isn't sticking for some reason like there isn't peanut butter in there gumming it up. If it moves freely but it still constantly clicking then, yup, defective.

I'd try to get it replaced. Might have to RMA directly with Microsoft. I'm not sure on how their return policy works.

It's a wrapper for the DirectX API. I use SlimDX.XInput to query the controllers.

Yup, defective. It should exactly mirror your inputs. Anything outside of that is erroneous and the only way it can error is that there's something wrong with communication or the controller itself.

Potentially but unlikely. You could try plugging it into a different computer and running the program on there as well to see if the problem follows the receiver/controller.

Pairing a second controller to the same receiver would definitively tell you if the receiver/computer is okay.

If you have no means to test further, I'd still pursue getting the controller replaced. I think if it were the receiver, it would behave a lot more erratically than it does.
