Hello! So currently I have MSI Z170 with i3 6100 and I have that idea in my mind to trade it for haswell i5 with Mobo and RAM or Sandy i7 with Mobo and RAM. So do you guys think it's worth doing such a thing ?

I don't think it is worth it at all. It is better to build your rig on an updated recent hardware rather than going back to haswell. What is your reason to do this? The i3 6100 is a good improvement from your G3258 even for ones that can overclock.

Well I currently have gtx 970 and is bottlenecked(even when the i3 is clocked) pretty bad and that's why I want to change it.

Makes more sense to keep what you have and get a better processor.

Or wait until Ryzen launches, sell the motherboard and processor (should be able to reuse memory) and get whatever Ryzen chip you can afford. Even the lowest end Ryzen chips (4c/4t) will be better than your i3.

I guess I'm going to keep it and just buy used 6700k or something like that.

UPDATE: I just traded my i3 6100 for my friend's i5 6400. We did it because he have h110 motherboard and this i5 at 2.7ghz and he couldn't play gta 5 on it because of stutters. I hope I can get 4.4 out of this i5 on my Motherboard.

i5 6400 is a locked chip.
Your motherboard needs a BIOS from 2015 where there was still BCLK overclocking possible.
If you can't get this old BIOS you're stuck at stock speeds.

On a side note. That i3 wont cure the stuttering your friend is having in GTA 5.

I guess he'll be coming after you with an axe once he finds this out.

Nope I didn't have stutter issues with the i3 because of the high frequency and I currently own MSI Z170 board so I can OCed using the bclk. I5 6400 was struggling because of the low frequency.

LOL, you said your friend has stuttering issues in GTA V!?
Yes with the i5 6400 because of the low speed.

The issues I'm reading in this thread don't seem like they're based in fact. I know from experience that a dual core i3 with hyperthreading can run Grandtheft auto five perfectly well, so right off the rip I know for a fact that your friends physical 4 core i5 wouldn't cause stuttering issues from the CPU.I guess I should add that I'm assuming your friend isnt running in 4K or something Hi-Rez

Furthermore I'm having a great deal of difficulty believing that a modern ithrees is going to bottleneck a GTX 970. I barely see any bottleneck on my G3258, when compared to my 4690 K, or my Xeon.

Now maybe I'm wrong ( I certainly Will admit that I am often wrong , and I want to clarify I am not calling the OP a liar )but if I am I know I'm not wrong on everything I've said and only mildly if at all. Can someone OTHER than the OP either confirm or deny what I've said here please?
What do u think @P4-630 ?

Yeah, I don't think a i3 6100 (even at stock, it's a fast CPU) will bottleneck a GTX970. :ohwell:

He already got the i5 6400 and he seems to be on an older BIOS so he's still able to OC the CPU by BCLK.

I got a feeling that this is one of those I think it so it is situations which is a shame because personally I wouldn't want to shortchange my friend like that. Or even a stranger for that matter, with friends like that who needs enemies :)

" oh you're 4 core processor is causing poor performance in Grandtheft auto? Here let's trade and you can have my two physical core two logical core i3 I'm sure that'll help ":nutkick:

Can you please read about that i5 6400 2.7Ghz and how he is causing stuttering in a lot of new AAA games because of its low speeds. I was there and I saw in GTA 5 literally all the building were disappearing the CPU was at 100% load all the time and nothing helped it was just happening. Please do a little research about i5 6400 stutter issues.

I can double verify this. I have an i3-4160 paired with an R9380x, and the i3 doesn't hold it back at all. There's definitely something else going on.

I also don't have problems with my i3 but then again this i3 CPUs are running at high speeds and i5 6400 is at 2,7 which is pretty low.

No real conclusion in these results whether an i5 6400 bottlenecks a GTX970.
I'm stopping here everything that I said is what I saw we literally tried everything but whatever maybe I'm stupid I don't know. The CPU is now in my system I will record the stutters and all the lag spikes once I have time.

PS: The game is starting to stutter once the cpu reach 100% load which is causing the bottleneck ad the stutters.

Yeah, I don't think a i3 6100 (even at stock, it's a fast CPU) will bottleneck a GTX970. :ohwell:
He already got the i5 6400 and he seems to be on an older BIOS so he's still able to OC the CPU by BCLK.
Recon-UK posted a link to a video with someone playing Battlefield 1 Open beta with i7 950 STOCK and gtx980ti with 1080 res with Ultra Setting and without Vsync though (I noticed even when you set the settings to Ultra, it won't touch or increase some settings at all). Watch the video in the begaining and see how the settings look like.

I guess the game runs faster than the open beta? I assume maybe With nvidia 970 and vsync-on with 1080 res, you should have set the settings to High or between High and medium?

EDIT: I know this is not GTA, but I just wanted to show how CPU bottleneck is overestimated sometimes.

I'm talking about GTA because this is the only game he is playing and it was running awfully bad with the i5 6400.

Did he even try to change the graphic settings in the game?
At what resolution is he playing?

Hello! So currently I have MSI Z170 with i3 6100 and I have that idea in my mind to trade it for haswell i5 with Mobo and RAM or Sandy i7 with Mobo and RAM. So do you guys think it's worth doing such a thing ?

Sandybridge i7 - Not work it, literally upgraded from a build from an i7-2700K to my current build (with i7-4790K) and had a significant improvement from just the chipset alone (connectivity improved, audio was good before it packed up and now have to rely on an external DAC amp).
Haswell i5 - Probably on par with your current build overall and slightly better due to CPU, but not worth it as DDR3 is becoming less common and easily outdone by newer and accessible DDR4.

Put simply I would advise saving your money and if Ryzen takes off well you can upgrade CPU and Motherboard for that and use the rest of the parts for your current PC build , but if Ryzen is a fail you could just upgrade to a better CPU (i5 at least) for better system performance.
If you do decide to stick with Intel and upgrade to a better CPU I would only recommend upgrading the motherboard for a particular feature as you would probably be disappointed if you was expecting a significant performance boost.
