I know " most " cards are either identical or slightly faster but nothing worth the effort.

What DOUBLES the performance of the 7950 3GB, both in paper and real life, used cards included ?

GHz edition? you're looking at Rx 280 performance, so a rx 480 would be close to double (80% giver or take) or a 1060/1070

Keep in mind Kepler is pretty much dead as far as Nvidia is concerned. I recommend you look for something newer.

3GB on 780ti might be a problem.
Mmmm so 8 is the new figure now when people talk upgrades from already decent 2013ish cards ?

3GB on the 780ti isn't an issue for most games upto 1440p, obviously it's not suited to 4k anyway so I don't see it as an issue, there may be a couple of games out there that will have issues with the 3GB though not too many, if you are looking used you may as well consider something like a gtx 970/RX 290/x as they can both be had for around the same price or slightly cheaper than a 780ti and are in the same class.

As someone on 1440p whose ran 970s and now a 1070. 3gb will hurt. You'll need to turn settings down

Granted it will in some cases as I said but on the whole it won't be an issue lower ram on higher end cards tends to fair better than on lower end GPU's and as per the link I posted the 780ti's 3gb vram doesn't have an issue in most of the titles that was reviewed, granted there will be exceptions and some titles that will require the settings be toned down a bit but that's a given as it's a 4 year old GPU now anyway

I used a 7950 prior to my 1070. And there is definitely a jump in performance. The sad thing about Pascals is that they are pretty much the same no matter what brand or air cooler it is. i used several bios and oced it as high as I can but the difference is near nargin of error. Obviously, water cooling them gives you a small benefit but clockspeeds don't scale well beyond 2100 mhz. Maybe get a 470 or 480 or simply wait for vega

Ive seen this too. Minimum i would recommend for 1440p is 4gb. So maybe a 980 or 980ti if not 470 or 480

GTX 1070 for 1440p is a good spot. You're also losing a lot of frames with an FX processor in many games.

Hard to find and run hot unless under water

Mine is on air (Thermalright shaman) and does not go over 60C (usually sits round 50/55C) under full load and I'm running a fully unlocked overclocked (core+hbm) overvolted bios with power limits beyond 150% of the stock! ;) But I agree they can get power hungry! Performance is there tho.

No they don't... I have a "Fury X" on air. Even with a stock fan curve it maxed out at 70C. I run my own these days and never goes over 60, I game at 1440 and want for nothing performance wise.

480 or 1060 are your best bet. At least 80% faster and in the good bang for buck zone. Used I wouldn't consider anything older or lower spec than a GTX 980.

Both are slower than 480 and 1060 which are already below his stated desire for 2x. The 970 is gimped in vram, and 290x will consume enough additional electric $ to burn through any cost savings.

Gotcha ! And is a 780Ti or 9xx, used, as good as 480 for games ?
780 Ti = no, too old, too slow, too power hungry
9xx = sure, depends

RX 480 8 GiB ~= GTX 1060 6 GiB ~= GTX 980
RX 480 4 GiB ~= GTX 1060 3 GiB

If that 7950 you have still runs good and functions well enough for you them keep it, don't just upgrade for the sake of the upgrade.

I went from a 7970 GHz LCS,to a GTX970,and the performance increase wasn't all that. But if you need more performance then yes it certainly is enough to at least double the performance of that card or close to it,
