What a pain in the arse, Ive had the same email address for yonks, i really liked it too because it was myname@orange.net......no numbers.

Today i get this,

Hello from Orange
After many years of service, Orange Email will close on 31 May 2017. This means that from this date onwards, you will not be able to access your account ***********@orange.net or view your old emails and contacts. We’re letting you know now, so that you can sign up to a new account and back up any information that you want to save.

What you need to do now
Switch to a different email address by 31 May 2017 (please see how below). You also need to update any other online accounts or services that use your Orange Email. For example, your online banking or utilities accounts.

I dont really care who i use but i am really going to miss my old email address. According to my most recent research there are only 7 people in the whole of the UK who have exactly the same name as me.........i hope i can get an address that shows me as a name and not a number.

I guess i will have to shop around and hope for the best. I am a name NOT a number FFS.

My local ISP was bought by Vodaphone, I am afraid that sooner or later my decades old email service will be shut down too.

It was a free email that came with a mobile phone contract. When i resigned the contract they gave me free home broadband. Then the bastards changed from Orange to EE and wanted to charge me 30 quid a month for broadband as i then had to change isp from Orange to EE.

Suffice to say i rang them a few times and told them exactly what i thought about it.....as a result i now have a much cheaper deal with Plusnet.

use an email client software to back up emails and then some can import from archives if you want to import to an standard browser based email provider... if they require outlook 2013/16 you can snag a trial for the operation then can it...

Sorry to hear that Caps, must be pretty frustrating. I guess EE doesn't want that branding any more since it would be trivial to keep it going.

It's possible to register your own domain name and have something like Yahoo, Gmail etc use it. You can then have any email address you want on your domain name. If you're interested, I can ask my friend how he does it and let you know.

If you're feeling really adventurous, you could run your own email server on that domain and keep the whole thing in house. It's something I've always wanted to do, but never got round to it. You do have to look after backups, availability etc though as it won't be cloud based.
Just realized you posted this three days ago and I've only just seen it. Wasn't ignoring you buddy. :toast:

My main hotmail/gmail address are just my name without numbers as well.

My first hotmail address was created in the 90s.

That sucks @CAPSLOCKSTUCK , I bet you were using your main email address on many websites/ account logins so you'll all have to update that with another email address....

I told my parents to never use an email address from their ISP again since they might change provider from time to time so they only use gmail now.

The implications of this are just starting to sink in. I think i will have to go through all my sent mail just to check i havent missed any of my friends and important contacts who arent in my address book.

I can see this being a right nuisance.

Caps, I have an idea!
You can buy a domain name, rent a VPS and make your own mail server w/ some open source web panel for brags.
capslockstuck.com is available.:D

Bad planning (not future proof :p).
The sole reason why ISP and mobile companies give you an e-mail account is that it might be a reason not to change, but it's almost sure that - at some point - you'll switch (e.g. because you'll move and it won't be available in the new place).

Basically the only near 100% probable lifetime e-mail is in your own domain, but that's a paid (possibly expensive) option.

Whenever someone has asked me for opinion, I recommended Google, Microsoft, Apple and so on. These are the companies that are almost sure to survive us and even if not - someone will take over their clients. :)

I've used name@gmail.com since 2006. At that point gmail was still invitation-only and it was fairly easy to get a clean address. Now it's full of random accounts (often for spam or bot-managed).
Lately I'm thinking about moving to MS (@live.com) - mostly because I'm building my PC worflows heavily around MS ecosystem - including the main cloud storage (1TB with Office 365 - basically for free :)).

I use protonmail for personal correspondence. Recommend it.

https://protonmail.com/

Very nice service security-wise (if you believe they're not selling anything, don't have hardware backdoors etc), but as a tool?
For free you get 500 MB, which forces some regular maintenance - removing files etc.

Plus, as it's not distributed, but kept in a single data warehouse under a mountain that can survive a nuclear bomb (blablabla), it can be blocked by something as simple as well organized DDoS:
