Gamer dies after 22 hour online marathon

Every now and then I read tragic stories like this. I don't understand why playing games straight for around 24 hours should be such a killer. Yes, they would be excessively tired and perhaps have an almighty headache, but why death?

I wonder if it could be deep veign thrombosis in some cases from sitting still in the same spot too long, like people can get when travelling on long haul flights. Seems to have been a heart attack in this instance, though.

All mammals need sleep. It's a matter of health. My guess is he was consuming way more caffeine than safe (causes increased heart rate and high blood pressure) + preexisting heart condition + exhaustion + perhaps dehydration = fatigue which, if not treated, can lead to cardiac arrest (chest pain, shortness of breath, irregular or fast heartbeat). Smoking substantially increases the risk of cardiovascular disease.

I once dropped acid at 4 am in the morning after being up all the previous day and didn't crash until 8pm that same day.

Agreed people, preexisting conditions sounds likely. Drinking lots of Red Bull is bad for you too. Heck, drinking just one without doing anything extreme noticeably thickens your blood. Saw that in New Scientist years ago. Article no doubt behind the paywall now. Lots of coffee can be dangerous too, agreed again.

The military especially in a battle tend to stay up 24+ hrs at times or very high opstempo.

They make sure they can handle it (e.g. high blood pressure is pretty much an automatic disqualification from service) and they're trained in detecting and treating fatigue. Military also has methods for keeping people awake that aren't drugs (jumping jacks anyone?).

I did my service 2004-2012.
I had a heart murmur even but never affected my performance.

Was sleep deprived especially in Korea.

Had 1 check up and they said bp was high, 8 hrs of sleep bp was normal.

Fyi the guy was a smoker so that was a contributer

Wasn't that when recruitment was low so they lowered standards for letting people in? That's really surprising that they choose to ignore a heart murmur. I guess since you weren't heading to front line duty may have had something to do with that decision.

We who were soldiers were also very highly physically-trained and with high stamina. Even so, 24 hour stints are rare, with forced sleep rotations enforced, especially among leaders, as clear heads are needed for decision-making.

This guy likely had some underlying condition, but keep in mind, blood clots can form with frightening speed if you have a bad heart valve or are inactive for a period. It's very possible for one to quickly move to heart or lung which can lead to instant death.

They evaluate you with Fitness tests, how fast can you run, etc, didn't have a problem running, pullups, situps pushups in boot or after.

They didnt lower fitness standards, it wasnt until 2012 that standards were being lowered for females so they could try out for Socomm Ops.

Article says he took breaks but it was 'funny' that his last break was a smoke break. I'll go for a thrombosis as qubit suggested was a possibility.

It's very well documented, sitting for long periods, in a chair, is very bad for the human physiology.

My record was just short of 5 days, if the truth be told, in many ways it was the hardest 5 days of my life, there was a famous comedian over here who died a few years ago in his late seventies, for more than 30 years he would only sleep for 2 hours a day, now that's really frightening

My guess is the person who died would have died anyway ,since staying awake for a day or so isnt going to kill you unless you're suffering from an underlying condition, or if drugs or some other substance was involved .I have 20 + years experience with prolonged lack of sleep and extreme high stress situations , frankly you might be surprised what a healthy human body can withstand. Of the many things that can kill a person who is healthy using the computer isn't one of them even for multiple days in a sitting.(special cases aside, i.e. licking fingers and poking them in the PSU)

My personal record is seven days without sleep, 12 without food. I've never tried it with water because I happen to know for a fact that's one of the few things you need regularly

I literally LOL'ed I've done 26 hour run on STALKER Clear Skies when it came out, no drugs, just regular meal and lots of coffee. I felt tired but no problems whatsoever.

Main reason as you mentioned Caffeine, or maybe could be Energy Drinks, nobody knows, in my days off i play regularly around 14/16 hours online mode, i drink a lot of energy Drinks and when i say a lot i mean around 6/7 liters in 14/16 hours plus i smoke, i know it won't take longer before something really bad will happen to me and i am aware of the consequences but
unfortunately it has become a habit, my record was 22 playing online till a few months ago when i decided to play for 24 hours, i drink Energy drinks and coffe every single day, i know that what i am doing is wrong and it's not healthy and i hope i can stop before it will be too late.

Note: my ex Girlfriend once told me this: If you continue doing so one day you will go to sleep and you won't never wake up again.
