This is funny, Intel is not completely aware of situation I think, this is not New Year discount.
Price of i7-6900K is now 999$, price of i7-7700K is 299$.

To be honest I would not buy now i7-6900K for 500$ because every normal man could explain me that I just bought slower model for 500$. But his price is not 500$, he cost twice more.

I don't think those are price cuts. Those are around the regular prices for 2011 chips and microcenter always has that discount on the mainstream parts. Biggest deal there is the 6700k being under $300 but I think they're just trying to clear stock since the 7700k replaced it.

And I don't see some price cut, looking this price of i7-6850K was 700$.
That's impossible. They will drop price, easy, you will see.
Or maybe Intel plan to sell mainstream 4 cores with worse kind of thermal paste under IHS and iGPU improvements for similar price as 1700X and he is almost as i7-6900K.
Z270 and Z370 now look funny, with many expensive motherboards, capable to hold only 4 core CPU weaker than 1700... OMG. Who bought i7-7700K and probably someone warn them to wait and some ROG motherboard, he could bouth 1800X and some cheaper mobo for same money.
Monopol completely destroyed CPU market and price go up to 2000$ almost for desktop processors for gaming and overclocking, not multi Xeons.

This is a joke, since it's not a price cut & it's not from Intel.
Although even if the 6900k were 500$ I wouldn't buy it because I don't want the competition to be even worse, than what it was for the last 5 years or so, & I'm not someone who cheers AMD on just because he can buy cheap Intel, Nvidia or whatever.

Yes, now i7-6900K look bad and for 500$.
Unbelievably, we are shocked because normal and good performance improvement.
Only because we used on misery and 5% improvement together with 200MHz higher clock among generations. :)

Intel could launch revision of Broadwell-EX stronger than AMD but they will not to do that and they should prepare something good for 2018.
This will reflect and on AMD GPU section. When they have excellent processors people are ready to tolerate little lower performance than NVIDIA but maybe AMD have surprise and for them. If AMD kill Pascal and Broadwell-EX they are back in game again and a lot high end computers will be build with AMD hardware inside.
For now I could not imagine high end RIG without Intel. But that will change.
People will need some time to used on AMD on top but they will accept reality.

I would not be surprise to hear from people who are disappointed with NVIDIA prices to change side little and build full AMD computer. Many of them would like to have option just to say goodbay to NVIDIA and their tricks and prices. Special when we talk about voltage regulation limit and because they cripple 1200$ worth GPU.

Intel is in very bad situation because enthusiasts usually pay up to 1000$ for whole platform or less. Except rear and rich people. I never pay more than that, always look less.
Now they could buy i7-6900K or to go with AMD.
With him they could buy whole platform for 1000$ and stronger CPU than i7-6900K - 8 core AMD CPU, ROG Motherboard and 32GB of DDR4 memory.

At least for now going for AMD in high end rigs is a no-brainer in my opinion , I really don't think people aren't going to spend an extra 500$ just to get that Intel badge (or maybe they'll surprise me lol).

AMD said they want Zen to stick around for 5 years , no one knows what that means exactly. Maybe this lack of response from Intel is coming from the idea that AMD will do the same thing with the FX line and basically not release anything major within this time slot.
