Looking to buy my first NVMe drive in a few weeks, of course the Samsung 960 is great, but whats some more cost-effective contenders in the same realm?

looking at at least 512gb.

Cannot comment in regard to the brands out there, but in terms of capacity? It's your wallet, but first look at the IOPS differences between 512 and 1Tb and then decide.

what are you gonna use the drive for?
i like M.2 SSD's cuz they might save space for a better build, but heat will be something you might need to care for,

Mainly for gaming, but also vmware workstation on windows doing labs for various certifications.

My Mushkin reactor is keeping up just fine, but i want to OS and a few core games on NVMe for a little higher performance.

Plextor M8PeG is one of the better options out there after Samsung, although right now the prices have gone up a lot and they're not as an attractive buy as when I got mine.

Corsair's new MP500 doesn't appear to be all that great for the money, maybe the Adata XPG SX8000?

Cheaper options would be WD Black and Intel 600p, they have fast read performance, but SATA-ish level write performance.

Having the performance for VMware could make it worth it. Also dedicating the Mushkin reactor for games will allow me to install a few more at once. If I'm gonna add more storage, it may as well be an upgrade. :)

Plextor looks good, i was also looking at the OCZ RD400.

looks kinda sketchy without any reviews.

Are there any major benefits to 960 pro vs evo?

Warranty and slightly better performance. Just go with the EVO really.

Why? because anyone would notice outside of benchmarking?

True, but when we're talking about this kind of money, i see it as an investment rather than.. yet one more HDD, to be replaced in two years. It being so, i wanted to make sure he's aware of the performance differences.
As i said, it's his wallet :)

Looking to buy my first NVMe drive in a few weeks, of course the Samsung 960 is great, but whats some more cost-effective contenders in the same realm?

looking at at least 512gb.
NVMe isn't very cost effective just because of how new and how few consumers are using it. It will grow in time. 512 GB is going to cost a lot.

If you're really concerned about money, just get a SATA SSD. Yeah, they're slower (500 MB/s rear versus >1000 MB/s) but also a lot cheaper for the density. Unless you have some special needs, they're fast enough. NVMe, right now, is like the $1000+ graphics cards and processors. Premium products for people that serious needs for speed.

That's simply not true. I paid $30 more for my Plextor M8PeG compared to the same size SATA drive with MLC flash when I got it. Ok, the price has gone up by $50 since then due to NAND flash going up in price (which means all SSDs are more expensive now), but at that small cost difference, I thought it was well worth the investment. Had it been $100 more there's no way I would've gotten it. I paid less than $230 for 512GB, which admittedly is a lot more than TLC based SSDs cost, but I've never owned one of those.

I just looked at Newegg and the Plextor M8PeG 512GB is $250 and the 2.5" SATA Samsung 850 Pro 512GB is $239, hardly in the territory of $1000+ graphics cards and processors. Yes, these are "premium" SSDs compared to say a 480GB SanDisk Plus at $140, but that's not a great SSD. It's also a bargain compared to a Samsung 960 Pro at $410.

$270 for M8Pe M.2 NVMe
$150 for MX300 M.2 SATA

Double the price for four times the performance. Is it worth it? Not to me. There's a big difference between going from a HDD to a 500 MB/s SSD (because latency). If you're not working with hundreds of gigabyte sized data sets, are you really going to be able to tell the difference between 2000 MB/s NVMe and a 500 MB/s SATA SSD without benchmarks? Not likely. This fancy thing called caching and buffering in software means that reads/writes to SSDs/HDDs are kept to a minimum as a matter of principle.

I think you missed my point, I was comparing NVMe to SATA drives in terms of cost and the 850 Pro is available as a 2.5" SATA drive for that price, hence the comparison. Clarified it above, just in case.

The MX300 is not MLC, it's TLC and not a great TLC drive at. Compare apples to apples at least.
Yes, you can get very cheap, poor performing TLC drives if that's what you want, but I don't think that's what we're discussing here, or am I missing something?

There are things I can tell the difference on, such as Photoshop and a few other programs that are much more responsive with the NVMe drive, but sure, for 80% of what I do, I don't notice the difference. Even so, I don't regret getting it.

I notice a difference between my 512GB OCZ Vector and 1tb 960 EVO in just boot times alone. Not to mention the few (single player) games that I load off of it as well. This is also from an image I took from my 512gb OCZ using Samsung Migration Tool as well, I'm not working off of a clean install from my 960.
