Awsome M.2 SSD cooler

I just had to share this, as I thought it was quite funny. Sure looks a lot more substantial compared to the little flimsy things that MSI and Asus provides with their boards, I'm just not sure how it's supposed to fit under a graphics card... It retails for roughly the equivalent of $16.

Just checked my m.2 slot and surroundings, if it's not much wider than a m.2 , my SB heatsink might be in the way, enough graphics card clearance though.

i am under the impression those chips do not get hot enough to create heat issues in desktop. or, can they be overclocked?

M.2 SSDs can get plenty hot in any system, it depends on your general airflow in the case, the placement of the M.2 slot and the type of components on the M.2 SSD itself.

My Plextor drive is a toasty 43 degrees when my system is idling.

that is well within operating parameters though, right? btw, i am not saying people who use these are dumb. i just never thought there would be a need for something like this.

Sure, it's rated at up to 70 degrees, and it does get close to that under heavy load, even though it has a basic heatsink. I don't have too much airflow in my case where it is, which is obviously a problem partially courtesy of using watercooling for the CPU, as my M.2 slot is above the graphics card. If they run too hot it can affect the performance negatively. There have been a few reviews talking about this issue.

thanks. the only reason i am bringing it up is that i am looking to build a new rig with m.2 and did not consider possibly needing a heatsink.

I have an m.2 ssd and have a 55C temperature recorded within its life time......I think that is HOT for a drive but still within tolerance....But hey look at what CPU's are rated for, BUT do we want it anywhere near that? Nope I don't.

M.2 SATA doesn't need a heatsink.

M.2 NvMe, maybe. I don't feel it needs a heatsink. If it does need one, it'd come with one.

Abusing the hell out of it just to prove the need for a heatsink doesn't count.

From my own testing, it can get hot but, even without a heatsink, it cools down rapidly in few seconds once load level goes down.
I tested it with my finger.

People said the same about memory but now it is pretty much a standard that High performance chips come with heatsyncs.

High performance RAM still doesn't need heatsinks, only some minimal but still measurable airflow. If you didn't include the bling, how else would the manufacturers charge a premium?

Consumer line of RAM usually come with heatsink since that makes it sell better.

Server RAM do not normally come with heatsink and these are the ones that get abused.

I got ninja'd before I could edit: some server RAM I will concede do in fact need heatsinks but not on the memory chips. The ECC controller on them can get very toasty.

Sorry for ninja-ing. Of all ECC rams I've purchased, I had only one brand that had a very crude thin aluminum heatsink. ECC ram does get hot but server should have plenty of airflow. Shouldn't matter really.

I agree with everyone here on all of this but I agree with myself too on this. When it comes to benches I think its a great idea! I would prefer a heat sync for it if I had room for it.

well... i have a basket full of tiny, and several shapes of all kind of heat sinks from older motherboards and other hardware...
i dont see my self getting that cover for a future M.2 drive, probably reuse some heat sinks from my basket..

Wouldn't surprise me with newer architectures of ECC ram. Voltages get dropped each generation, smaller die sizes, etc. My last ECC purchase was still in the DDR2 days.

The drives throttle when they get too hot. There have been a few articles showing performance drop off after the drive has been in use for a while. But, in reality, under normal use where you aren't writing to the drive for a hour straight, temperature is never an issue.

What temps do you get with that m.2 when you are gaming? (assuming you have games installed on it)
When I buy one I will mainly run games from it, I leave my OS on my sammy pro.
So it will be mostly reading when I use it.

no no, i just have some regular aluminium and steel heatsinks from screwed motherboards and other hardware... i use to take them out drom dead motherboards before trowing it to hardware container, electrical and tech related trash is picked up from some guys that take care in a responsible way of all electronics, thats why i take all possible heatsinks, could serve me pretty well on some scenarios,
