Since the discovery of the Van Allen Belts roughly 50 years ago, it’s been thought that the inner portion was rich in super-fast electrons, which would bombard craft with radiation.

Now, scientists have found that there is far less radiation in the inner belt than they’d previously thought.

In a new study, published in the Journal of Geophysical Research, observations from NASA’s Van Allen Probes revealed that there are usually no relativistic electrons in the inner belt.

The discovery goes against previous assumptions.

Scientists used an instrument known as the Magnetic Electron and Ion Spectrometer (MagEIS) to distinguish the super-fast electrons from high-energy protons, giving them new understanding of the belt's composition.

The Van Allen Probes, launched in 2012, carry Magnetic Electron and Ion Spectrometer (MagEIS) instruments that can distinguish between protons and electrons in the belt. MagEIS uses its own magnetic field to sort particles by charge and energy, and that's what's yielded the new results.

“We’ve known for a long time that there are these really energetic protons in there, which can contaminate the measurements, but we’ve never had a good way to remove them from the measurements until now,” explains Seth Claudepierre, lead author and Van Allen Probes scientist at the Aerospace Corporation in El Segundo, California.

The outer belt, naturally enough, takes the big hits in a solar storm, while the inner belt was assumed to be more stable. Not so: measurements gathered during major solar storms in 2015 let probes gather observations of high-energy electrons getting pushed into the inner belt.

But hang on, this can't be, because there's too much radiation for the astronauts to have gone to the moon and survived, so they never went.

Please don't argue with me, because I'm working from alternative facts and the earth is flat, therefore I'm right.

Honestly, I want more bold progress in space exploration. All we've had in last decades have been new theories and distant discoveries. Ever since monkeys stepped onto Moon, the progression sort of stopped.

New hero monkeys have got to land on Mars.

The New Horizons probe that recently flew past Pluto and is now en route to 2014 MU69 (will fly past on Jan 1, 2019) is pushing our current boundaries. Also, the Dawn Mission that orbited both Vesta and Ceres was the first of its kind asswell (first spacecraft to orbit two extraterrestrial bodies - and yes I always spell it asswell, no offense intended). Additionally, the latest Mars rover is pretty beastly. I'm slightly partial to it since I put in some test time on the motors and actuators in Hauppauge, NY a few years back.

The moon is moving away from the earth. In years to come countries will be either roasting hot or freezing cold with no change. Frightening.....

Tin foil hat time.... At least that we are aware of! Not like governments have not been known to hide things from the public in the past. For all we know, Mars has been inhabited by us (humans) since the 60s or 70s ;) That was the original goal of Wernher after all!

?! Are you indirectly implying that you are making the posts from a Martian ISP?

So, you are not an unpaid babysitter but an unemployed Martian?

Moon ? you mean the thing that has been skillfully added with photoshop on every near space photos ?
Nahhhh the aliens parked it there years ago, it got dusty now it looks like a moon but really a big dust covered deathstar.
Hows this news enable amazing space craft , like they had the shielding sussed for their prior theories not.

The Van Allen Belt consists of charged particle radiation, not x-ray or anything else. Plastics, alloys, even wood can act as shielding for charged particle radiation. Also, the belt doesn't cover the entire globe 360 degrees. You can fly out the top or bottom and go around it, granted there will still be radiation and some will still penetrate the craft, however the amount of time needed to travel through the area isn't long enough for the body and most materials to deteriorate before exiting the belt. Any minimal damage the radiation does to your cells can be healed rather quickly.

The Apollo moon misssions carried no additional shielding to protect the occupants.
