ok guys so i need advice/input on what i should get to use my old ide drives on my new X99 motherboard

now about 18 months ago i bought a startech PEX2IDE 1 port PCI Express IDE Controller adaptor card, and that was very finicky on what drives it would accept, it also used to make the computer boot twice no matter what settings i tried in the bios before getting into windows (it seems to have died )

the card doesn't have to be permanent as i'm going to back up what i have and then use the older drives in my cctv system (if that ever works again but that's another story altogether )

so what do you guys use to back up old hard drives?

uh, a usb-ide or all in one usb-ide/sata adapter... why would you need crappy ide drivers to be internal, especially if temporary? why would you want them in a cctv system?

Cheap old [alternatively - used] USB enclosure for IDE drives.

Not a good idea. Old IDE HDD, used for almost a decade, is probably the least fit candidate for CCTV storage duties.
Plus, if you are planning on using a dedicated DVR w/ your cameras, you may encounter the same problem as with modern PCs - no IDE.
IDE/PATA is pretty much dead.

your right :toast: tbh i don't know why, it's just a gadget and would probably cause more problems than it would solve

it's an old cctv system that uses pata drives (they are getting like rocking horse poo to find) and i don't fancy spending another $500-600

i know their are pata to sata converters but they don't work properly (or the one i bought that was supposed to be for that purpose didn't)

as said it's an old system, it worked fairly well at the old house, that was untill we moved and i put it in the garage, i'm sure the car fumes broke the 500gb hard drive that was in it (ye ye sounds crazy but two of the old drives i had in it have failed :wtf: )

i had thought about buying a USB 2.0 to IDE device but thought i'd heard they don't last long

keep your thoughts coming :)

For a one-time deal it is cheaper, and does not require headaches with setup/drivers. In regards of reliability - probably bullshit.

It can be anything. My last 750GB IDE HDD failed from fan vibrations. Went through 3 of them after RMA, before Seagate ran out of replacements and sent me a SATA drive instead.
That was almost 10 years ago. Yours probably died of old age.:nutkick:

"Yours probably died of old age."
lol could have been, but tbph i never used the cctv that much ( i think iirc it used about 400 watts  :wtf: )
we live in a reasonably quiet area where theirs no through road (although that doesn't stop people turning around in their cars) so it's not seen much use at all here

so to get the data off my old 160 gb drive, i took the graphics card from my new x99 system and put it in the old x58 i had lying around, it only has a 6 gb os drive with win XP, but it worked ok to backup the 160 gb drive i have planned to put in my old cctv system ,

then i put in my 320 gb drive :shadedshu:
omg i've been up since 4am
the drive has something wrong with it and certain files just killed the computer, i'e the system just locked up, no bsod
i kid you not i have restarted the thing at least 28 times :banghead: :twitch: o_O
i don't know whether it was hardware or software related, but at one point i thought their was a cat outside meowing, turns out it was the drive booting up and then going into sleep mode

that'll teach me to save stuff on an old ide drive :ohwell:

anyways i think i might go with a usb to ide,
although as i said, i would like to hear what brand you guys have had luck with and which ones i should avoid like the plague
