500$ = buy a new graphics card, maybe a GTX 1070 (new one with bumped memory speeds) or a Vega if it's nice for the price (I don't game that much, I don't need anything faster and really expensive)

1000$ = same, and maybe a 240 or 360 rad AIO watercooler for my CPU on top of it, to get some higher OC out of it for benchmarks, and better temperatures overall. Save the rest for something else. Edit: I just realized that my subwoofer is still broken, so: get a new 5.1 speaker set (probably Teufel again)

2000$ = same + a new Gsync 27" or bigger UWide or 16:9 high Hz monitor (now we go into luxury territory)

Maybe I'd buy the monitor with a 1000$ bucks too, but leave the old cooler. Funny idea this thread.

I'm using € instead, and based on the assumptions that my motherboard is npt dying.

€500: Used Haswell i3/i5, some books, stockpile the rest.

€1000: Used Haswell i3/i5/i7, looking into finding parts for my car, or maybe an entire car to scavange for parts. Possibly s guitar, if I could find a good deal on one. Shoes for the summer. Clothes. Sound card. Stockpile the rest.

€2000: see above.

Well, I currently have much more available cash than all these values summed, but it's still not enough for a Bimmer I'm planing to buy.
500 $ would cover the registration tax
1000 $ would cover some more expenses like basic insurance and registration tax
2000 $ would be enough for basic insurance, registration tax, set of additional nice-looking wheels and tires

Than there is vehicle's price tag (in most European country they are on average 20-30% cheaper than in Croatia) and ridiculous Croatian import taxes (around 4000 $ in my case).
Over here cars are far, far more expensive than in the US. So, for the same car with a 10000 $ price tag in the US, I would have to cash out almost 30000 $ over here - and I'm not even talking about a new car. Welcome to Croatia.

1000 - Fix rust and then paint the necessary parts.
2000 - Re paint the whole car and maybe buy a game.

Looks like I've become more of a car guy now as I'm satisfied with my current rig for the time being.

I think that the speed of shifting, even more so if it's a dual clutch transmission, kind of balances performance in that respect and things like lock-up clutches in torque converters gets you almost all the way there. Heck, even Subaru's CVT has better fuel consumption than the 5sp. for the Impreza (which is what I have.) I got a standard for two reasons:

1. I like having control over my vehicle as I know what gear I want to be in before I even touch the accelerator (I often downshift early so power is already available and for engine breaking.)
2. I've had a lot of automatics fail on me because there are hydraulics and pumps. When it can't pump it doesn't lubricate well and it doesn't shift well or at all. Usually because the previous owner didn't take care of it. In a MT, there are no pumps or hydraulics, just gears sitting in gear oil. Simply put, simple machines are more reliable and have simple problems.

Back on topic though:

$500: Save it.
$1000: Save it.
$2000: Wait but, new machine.

One more point: You can't really powerslide with an automatic as it can be a bit unpredictable thus resulting in a possible fender bender.
Automatics are needed once you cross a certain power limit, otherwise I stay clear of them, always have and always will

The money I keep "saved" for PC stuff ends up eaten up by my cats. But if I was forced to spend it on PC right away then...
(I need a GPU and GAMING monitor... + an HDD because it can die any day now.)

$500 USD: Just a bit more than enough for a 1060 6GB. Will have to save up a bit to get a half-decent no-sync, 60Hz 1080p monitor. Or, just get a 144Hz, 1080p monitor.

$1000 USD: This will miss the GTX 1080ti just by a bit ... may be, atm. So a GTX 1080 ONLY , Or a GTX 1070 with a 1080p, 144Hzmonitor. Buying JUST a uber monitor and no GPU is not something I can see myself doing...

$2000USD: Well, this will get me (almost) a couple of 1080Ti, but wouldn't be justifiable since it would probably be bottleneck-ed by my CPU. So, a GTX 1080ti, a good gaming monitor (144Hz, 1ms gtg, at least 2k with Gsync), an SSD and one HDD if there's enough money left after the GPU and monitor. And if I can manage all those and still have some spare left, then an RGB mechanical keyboard.
