NVIDIA Adds Telemetry to Latest Drivers; Here's How to Disable It

If you posted it, without even implying it was a quote no less, then you obviously believed it and you were stating it as fact. It doesn't matter where you got the mis-information, where you copied and pasted it from, the moment you posted it the way you did, it becomes your words.

No where in any of that does it say they sell any of the data they collect. In fact, the EULA points to the Privacy Policy for how the data is used, and the privacy policy very specifically states that it is not sold.

So, again, I'd like to know where you are getting that they admit they are selling the data collected through the nVidia driver and GFE.

I'm not disputing they selling but they do admit they share it. Its naive to think they dont when the policy clearly states it does

I for one, don't care for targeted ads. And if you're going to shove them down my throat by profiling me, you'd better at least have a good reason. My GPU driver does not.
Just how long will it be before your Video Card fails to work to its full potential because the now included Telemetry functions will stop it from functioning unless it can phone home with its information.

You very specifically said they sell the data and they admit it in the EULA.

And at the same time, they only admit they give away personal information in the privacy policy. But they also state that the driver and GFE don't collect personal data, only system data. So none of the data collected by the driver or GFE is given to 3rd parties.

I mean, I guess if you are really worried that nVidia is telling eveyone your system specs, this is a big deal...:ohwell:

Can you point to where i specificly said they were selling because I cant seem to find it in my post.

I wouldn't want to make stuff up just to be combative.

If "sharing with advertisers" isn't basically selling your data, I'm not sure what is. But you're right, it's the privacy policy and not the EULA. Reddit misled me. Bad on me.

I wouldn't want to make stuff up just to be combative.

I said it. Reddit misled me (wouldn't be the first time either) into thinking such as I quoted a post quoting a privacy policy entry that was presented as the eula.

I need to source check better. Apologies. This is way less than I thought, apparently.

No worries the EULA @newtekie1 posted in his spoiler here links and refers you to the private policy. Selling I don't know but one would guess that if your part of their partner program you could very well have access to the data collected.

That's my bad, I got you confused with something R-T-B said. I apologize.

Well, in one nVidia is making money from directly selling the data, in the other they aren't.

Also, nVidia doesn't give any data to advertisers. NVidia just allow advertisers to collect it themselves. That's what the privacy policy states and allows. And, as I said, it is pretty much the exact same privacy policy, and the exact same system, you'll find on every website that has advertisements on them, including TPU.

They don't need to 'sell' the data. Look at Nvidia's current portfolio. They make video cards. In that same space, they also do some VR, they do some in-home streaming services, but they also do on-demand services. A bunch of those are in the Nvidia SHIELD, for example, which is directly tied into GFE but even more tied into Android TV = Google.

I love how people here made the distinction with Google's 'targeted Ads' and how they were the least of all evils in advertising... well there you go. This is why Nvidia states these things in the EULA and privacy agreement. The bottom line is the same as with all other online services that are 'added features' or 'free' - they use your data and you are part of the Big Data analysis. Every little bit of information becomes valuable when we can extrapolate it to the masses. Because the masses are the money.

I think you need to approach this in a different way. I give Google, Nvidia, the benefit of the doubt *as long as* their services they offer in return remain top notch and worthy of me sharing my stuff with them. The moment they stop being what I want them to be, I move on to something else. Regardless, even if I remove my account somewhere, there is a good chance that I am still indirectly tracked in some way because these days every service connects to the other. Case in point with Google > Android TV > Search > on-demand content and in home streaming > even gaming across my home network through GameStream. No GFE on my main rig? Forget about GameStream then. What happens here is that if I even want to use ONE little part of the Nvidia ecosystem, I will need to be logged. Smart move.

Regardless, you cannot deny that these companies use your data to make money and run a business, which can ONLY mean that your data and whatever you do that is being monitored, has value that you're only seeing as long as you gain an advantage from the service offered in return. That is why people won't buy it when Nvidia (or some random poster in this thread) points out they're improving the drivers with it because that is absolute BS, it would mean they were only testing drivers as they are pushed out with a BETA sticker and then WHQL certification. The quality of drivers has zero relation to telemetry. Same as in Win 10. If you think they use Telemetry to improve the OS... you're deluded. That stuff happens in an earlier phase.

Telemetry is used for exact same purposes as Google's Ad Sense.

I felt like Nvidia should have pointed this out before they started with this "telemetry" in their driver not saying they need a big warning sign, and ofc it helps fixing error's, crashes and so on but still I would like to have known this from Nvidia not on TPU, Majorgeeks or a Reddit user.

Just tested, i don't have these entries with bare driver. GFE.
It appears it doesn't load on Windows 7, only on 8.1 and 10.

The way I read this is that Nvidia is full of bloatware that needs tracking data. AMD anyone?

Nvidia's idea of sharing means you can gurantee 3rd parties will collect data on you, any kind of data allows for the building of a profile. Your profile, as long as your IP is within any data block collected from any resource anywhere, will be added into an existing profile of you. That profile is then bought, sold, and shared with whoever for profit or benefit (non monetary), to anyone who wants it, including any government with just a simple request.

The sad part is that there is no Opt-Out except to not use any Nvidia software. Same with M$s's bullshit, even tho your turned off what privacy settings you could, Cortana still collects and sends the data.

The thing I hate most is the collection of certain data without specific permission, the EULA crap means any company can walk over your grave piss on it and walk away and laugh. They have you by the ballz jus because you want to use their software or play their *new* game.

You can try to limit what is taken, but what i dont understand is why they have to phone home, even when your arent using their software, every 5 minutes or so.

I wonder if Linux driver will implement something like that too... if yes then well... my next card is RED.

So far windows only for gaming. Any other stuff in Linux... screw 'em all.

Only if people more would switch to linux these things would be extinct due to competition open sauce taste.

They did tell us. It's in the EULA that the driver and GFE collect system data related to their function.

AMD anyone?

Hate to break it to you, but most of AMD's software, including their drivers, sends crash reports back to AMD just like nVidia.

Exactly! I use steam every day and they probably profile me out the ying yang, but I don't care because they add some value to my base gaming experience.

A display driver is not a "value-added" service, it is absolutely required to make the product work. Your choice in the matter is removed.

All I am really for is putting the consumer in control of his/her information... nothing more.

I do not worry about video cards. As long as I get a picture that is good. I can watch videos in a pinch, or buy a video disc player for my tv if it does not work the first time.

Might as well hang up a nice painting then and stare at it, given your indifference on what your 'screen' is showing you.

Probably much cheaper too. Got anything meaningful to add?

Ah gotcha, unplug the Lan cord. Problem solved.
^^ Not that long ago, really, everybody knew that connecting your LAN (i.e. localhost) to the Internet was a colossally bad idea. These days, people don't even think they need a firewall (LOL).

I'm lucky, my router can handle some of the grunt-work, as a gateway, before software even has to take over:
