Planning a ryzen 1600 build in a few weeks and need some help on suggestions for ram and motherboard.

Looking for suggesting from people who have experience with ryzen and the various issues with ram, BIOS issues etc to try and avoid any unnecessary issues.

I'm going to be opting for a b350 motherboard instead of the x370 as from what I have read and given the limited overclocking of ryzen chips both can overclock roughly around the same so no need to spend the extra

Ram I want 3000-3200 ram as that seems to be the sweet spot for performance, might have to budget for 8gb to start so single 8gb sticks would be helpful otherwise a 16gb kit that can get to 3000-3200mhz without too much issue will be fine.

These are the only parts I need any suggestions on as the rest I won't have any issues with, though for reference I'll be looking to get a RX 580 and the usual gumpf (ssd/HDD 600w PSU etc etc)

This isn't a general ryzen thread and I don't want to hear about the platforms shortcomings, how it compares to Intel etc etc just suggestions for some ram and motherboards and anything related, experiences etc :toast:

MSI and ASROCK seem to be doing best with BIOS and memory support at this point. ASUS BIOS is no where near ready for my Croshair VI (Which I have to RMA because it give random hardlocks and failed to post.) I would shoot for 3200 CL14 RAM if you can afford it and care about getting higher RAM speeds on the platform. AMD has AGESA code getting released to motherboard manufacturers to help with some issues. Should be in a month or so. I have some corsair vengence lpx 3200, which I can get to boot at 2933 if I want to spam the reset button to get past q-code 55. My friends Crosshair VI does not have this issue. G.SKill Flare and trident z seem to be the best with samsung b die memory modules.

EDIT: Just got my Corsair Vengenace LPX working at 3200MHz with DOCP standard profile. Apparently PLL voltage at 1.88 is the magic sweet spot. I am fairly certain my Corsair RAM has Hynix modules as well.

I only seen this today and didn't get a notification that anyone had replied :banghead:

I have been considering the MSI tomahawk Arctic b350 board:

http://www.ebuyer.com/784961-msi-amd-b350-tomahawk-arctic-am4-b350-motherboard-b350-tomahawk-arctic

Also I recall reading that ryzen seems to fair better with single rank ram or is it single bank (1 side) as both are a thing....Hoping someone can chime in with a definitive answer as I have found some single rank 3200mhz ddr4 though I'm thinking it should be single bank not rank

I've read from others that single RANK RAM works best, and that dual should be avoided. There's some helpful info in this older thread https://www.techpowerup.com/231518/...-ddr4-memory-support-and-upcoming-am4-updates.

As always, to be completely safe, look at the motherboard vendor's memory QVL list.

That is the exact RAM I am running. I have it working good at default speed and timings. I just had to up PLL voltage to get my computer to boot past 2133 consistently. Replacement board arrived today.

Perhaps I am a bit confused about this single rank/bank, but if it is single sided then the RAM I am using is.

Yes, easy way to think of rank is single-rank is single sided and rank is double-sided. Rank just means row

Main advantage of x370 over b350 is SLI and Power Phases, chokes.

If you were going X370 its either AsRock or Asus. B350 boards I have no clue on. Im presuming it would be those 2 again unless if MSI, Gigabyte, Biostar have good stuff on that chipset...

I heard good things about the asrock boards and decided to buy a b350 chipset one, only problem is I bought the wrong one by mistake, I bought the AB350m instead of the AB350m-Pro 4, not sure what the differences are tbh but the b350m only has 2 RAM slots and 1 PCIE 16x as opposed to 4 RAM slots and 2x PCIE on the Pro 4, I wont be using 4 RAM sticks anyway or dual GPU's and they have the same 6+3 phases so I'm hoping they should clock about the same, 3.8/3.9ghz on the 1600 will be fine for me, unfortunately I wont know if thats possible until the end of May as I can't afford the 1600 out of this months wages

Found some patriot RAM that's on the QVL to run at 3000mhz so I think I'm going to start with 8GB of that and then maybe try my luck with a 16GB single rank kit when I can afford it.

Dont buy a Mainboard with only 2 ram slots, it makes it more difficult and expensive to upgrade ram and CPUs are for long term usage nowadays.

I never use more than 2 RAM slots, can't see me going to 32GB anytime soon and I'll likely buy a new board some way down the line anyway as it's a fairly entry-level one dohhh :wtf:

Doooh yourself. It's simply not smart to buy a 2 slot Mainboard, 4 slots cost what, 10 bucks more? And I was talking about long term usage not "soon". Care to read.

I was saying it to myself as I mentioned I purchased the wrong one, and I said I WILL NOT use more than 2 RAM sticks, never have and wont have the need for a long time and this board will be long gone by then anyway but thanks for the consideration

Btw consider that 32gb ram kits are dual rank rams resulting in lower ram clocks in Ryzen platforms. Just sayin. Good luck

Thanks, as I said 16GB will be doing me fine (when I buy 16GB 2x8GB ) and again the board wont be in this build for years I tend to incrementally upgrade over a 1-2 year period as I can't afford to splurge £1k in one go

Thanks, as I said 16GB will be doing me fine (when I buy 16GB 2x8GB ) and again the board wont be in this build for years I tend to incrementally upgrade over a 1-2 year period as I can't afford to splurge £1k in one go
I think the sweet spot for that is 2666-2933 ram atm. Too bad prices are so extreme atm, else you could simply go for 3200 ram and still cheap enough.

They're ridculous atm, I'm paying the same for 8GB DDR4 as I did for a 16GB kit of DDR3 last year :shadedshu:
Obviously they're different manufacturiing processes and DDR4 likely is still more expensive to produce, is it twice the cost? hell no

DDR4 was ultra cheap a few months ago, comparable to DDR3, too bad we're no truth tellers. ;)
