Hi I have two questions 1. Would I see much improvement, if I were to overclock my graphics cards and 2. How would I go about it, can I use strixx to do it.

Strixx or MSI Afterburner.
For improvement depending on the card stock clocks and the card it self looking at 10%-15% performance increase.
Those r9 290 consume a lot of power and run hot, make sure you have enough headroom for both.

Besides gradually increasing the clock testing and keeping an eye on the temps, no.

A do not with GPU overclocking: Find the maximum, and stick to the absolute maximum clock you can bench on. Sooner or later you'll encounter a game that will destroy that OC. (ie game crashes, instability)

A good 24/7 OC is one that you can keep in any situation. Use Heaven 4.0 + 3DMark to test your stability, and when your highest clock seems to be stable, take one or two small steps back from that max, and you'll most likely have a stable OC for a long long time.

FWIW you have a set of the top end 290's on air cooling, so there has to be some decent headroom to play with

I'd recommend Afterburner, Strixx is a bit clunky imo.

i think 1050mhz should be doable in crossfire whithout testing or anything.

Yes those are my cards,Last question before I start, Is it worth it. Please be honest. I had a quick look at afterburner did I read that it will do both cards at the same time.

No synchronisation is key ,most oc software has a option for that in settings.
Your cards are already pulling a lot of power so you might not get much , and your psu might not support such an oc in headroom terms.
Worth it depends, are you expecting a lot because it likely won't gain that much in fps terms but its always been worth it for me.
Ive used sapphire trixx for years as its less busy and more reliable than afterburner.

My directions recomended a 750W PSU, I have a high qual 1250 because I oc'd my cpu to 5.0, I have a VaporX card, but don't OC because of no need

It should be able to handle a decent oc, of course ocs depend on ambient temps and airflow in the case too.

Really not good for that, better to have directed airflow and positive pressure to keep dust out especially overclocking.

Watch this video about basic overclocking with MSI Afterburner. He uses Titan X but same principles apply for AMD.

Ocing is to where you feel comfortable or what the gpu feels comfortable with, certain clock speeds need cettain voltages, if its stable gaming and dailybuse even movie use, congrats you just did your first oc, you are using trixx i see too.

Thanks, I don't know what one is the best but I preferred trixx as it didn't have as many bits about it, I might try and push them a little bit further.

Trixx is the inhouse utility, which does fine, if you need a finer tune then restore the default clocks in trixx, disable trixx and use AB. But use what you are comfortable with for now
