If the port directly mounted on the motherboard is killing USB devices, I'd just bite the bullet and replace the motherboard, then psu if problem persisted.

Replacing one of these is easier said than done and it has only killed mice. (so far)

As i i've said. The the main supply voltage ain't at fault here... I am already dry mouthed to say so.

You sure... it ain't just a cursed coincidence that the mice become dead just because of a change... some cold joints induced by the (LAN)party and testing out. Life's a bitch... it happens really often.

The 4th mouse to die was the one i use, it worked perfectly for me for a couple of years, put it in the DFI and it no longer worked. The LED underneath glows red just as it should but there is not even a pointer on the screen.

I am just pleased that i know a mouse will work in it and there are 6 ports which play nice with a mouse.

Apart from that..........I'm baffled as to the cause but the remedy is fine and i dont see why the long term prognosis shouldnt be a good one.

You know I am in the same boat as you with my Rampage Gene II on that, X58 rocks. If the LED glows, you know it is supplied from the main 5V rail that looks perfect there, the data rails are the ones causing ruckus. There's the large VRM heat sink, you cannot see underneath behind the ports... some alien object like metallic foil, metallic particle in the right place, where the pull up resistors are... water damage(previously a leaked water loop?)

Have you tried plugging anything into the voltage reader while plugged into the mobo USB ports?

no, i really dont want to plug my one working mouse in, just in case.

EDIT

Many thanks to everyone who is helping. My son was 18 the other day and has just started his first job, we are all really proud of him.

Especial big hugs to @basco for giving him the board in the first place, its rare and special. Before anyone blasts basco for sending a duff board....just dont. A lot of people just chuck this stuff away.....not him or me neither.

The PC works great, its holding a near 60% overclock and if it hates mice..so what.

Thanks from my son too............:toast:

Probably a good save concerning the mouse but I was curious if there was any difference for the readout. Know of a mouse you would be willing to sacrifice to find out?

Mice is something special as a PC device. It still has one of the most deep access rights to the CPU to do an IRQ(we are old enough to know what it is), their controllers are quite fragile mostly(for cheap devices, because making them sturdy costs). I've posted a picture about the voltage range accepting a logical 1 and 0 for all USB devices, you will burn a device pulling even a 5V to a logical "1" . If there is a short cut or a leak, it will burn a transistor based device. CMOS based are usually immune to it. The voltage supply doesn't play a role here, the logical data rails are, everyone is sailing their boats in the wrong direction(obvious yes, but even a mice consists of supply and data +/- rails, everyone just thinks of the supply).

In my experience such killer boards. I've encountered boards that killed HDD's, RAM, CPU's but peripherals, and only mice? You ruled out your PSU being fine, it should be something obvious like some short cut another anomaly causing voltage raise in the data lines(corrosion). Unfortunately you can only it measure using an oscilloscope :/ No easy ghetto solution here, to be sure what's the cause.

Im using a borrowed mouse now but i wlll be ordering more to replace the dead ones. I was going to get him a wifi one because a wifi keyboard works ok with a dongle.
@dorsetknob offered to send me a pci usb card then i remembered i had one in a drawer, it has 4 ports and with the 2 on the case he is fine.

thanks for the kind words Caps!

but what has me puzzled that the ps\2 is not working too??
i only know that i always used ps\2 mouse\keyboard when it was possible- even with that green usb to ps\2connector and the violett for keyboards.
always had and have logitech mx518\g400 and generic cherry keyboards.
and for short test(before sending to ya) both was connected to usb(just ran some benches for 20 min)

i think everything green on the mainboard is uv reactive(pci-e slots+ cables)

is that 0,944 volt under load?

if ya dont get that mb to run properly you get that ace up my sleeves for a super price.
just for i would never sent something faulty that i know of-and you know that.
because i dont want ya to spend more on mice + usb stuff that the mainboard is worth.

Yeah for that adapter to work, the mouse has to recognize it, and talk ps/2 instead of usb.

Good read in this thread, I am baffled myself, never seen such an issue. It should be fine as long as there is a workaround.

I once knocked a capacitor off from an X48 board, the sound card was missing a channel. Still works to this day with an add-on card.

This however seems to be a slightly bigger problem but as I've said, as long as there is a workaround, it should be fine.

I am off to town tomorrow and will buy a mouse.

I was last in town two weeks ago and when i got off the bus a guy approached me, looking as if he recognized me....i didnt recognize him at first but as we got closer i saw it was my old mate James.

We first met 35 years ago and kept in regular touch. we had some truly mental times together in our 20's and 30's. About 15 years ago James started having fits, long story short........brain damage. No driving, obviously , and tons of meds.

So we kept in touch and saw each other sometimes, he lives about 25 miles from here but as i have stopped driving its been a while ( 7 years ) since we hugged.

Back to the bus station

i recognized James...a bit dishevelled looking, but it was him. We brought each other up to date with family news. His family had recently sold their big hotel in Tenby, a place where my wife worked, i spent the night there before i was married and we had our wedding reception there too. So it felt like part of my family history and i was sad to hear they had sold it. James Mum had died as had one of our mutual friends from Tenby. There was good news though about all of our kids so it wasnt all doom and gloom.

James told me about his poor health and then he had to go. He was off to art college....his course finished 6 years ago but he just keeps turning up and they just keep letting him in...........:peace:. His bus arrived, we hugged again and that was that.

So, back to the mouse and how any of this is at all relevant.

You know i carved the fish? It suddenly struck me of James' catch phrase whilst drunk or whatever " FISH" in your face........all the fucking time " FISH"............ fucking lunatic.

Tomorrow i will be in town at the same time.........I am going to give James the fish tin that i made while going through the mouse thing

Hes gonna love it and it should really make him laugh.........:peace::peace:
