If you are running the original release of Windows 10 for some reason nearly 2 years after launch, you may want to consider finally doing a feature update to one of the newer builds. This May's "Patch Tuesday" will be the last for the original release build of the operating system, otherwise known as "Version 1507."

Microsoft states the usual tune regarding what will happen if you ignore this: Your computer will continue to work, but you will miss out on new security updates. This could make your machine vulnerable. Furthermore, several driver model and kernel level changes have occurred since the original build, meaning you may not even be able to load your latest GPU drivers, for instance.

It is worth noting this is the first time Microsoft has EOL'd an operating system under 2 years of age. Microsoft defends this of course by explaining the "Windows as a Service" model is built for constant feature updates, to improve the OS over time. Windows 10 itself remains an actively supported product, naturally.

Regardless of how you feel about the practice of "Windows as a Service," you probably should consider updating machines still running this build of Windows 10, if you have any. The only reason I can picture you'd still be on this build would be bandwidth limited machines, in which case, you may have to make an exception and get bandwidth somehow (or burn an update CD/USB, etc). There are also of course offline machines, where you likely don't care either way about network security issues, but those are few and far between today. If you are online, it really is advisable to update if you can to an actively supported OS.

Microsoft's policy for machines like that is to use LTSB. I'm writing to the average at home user, which isn't even eligible for LTSB. LTSB has a 10 year support period.

For 7 and XP its Embedded, but in the world of the PLC things move a bit slower than the x86 world.

ALERT: I just changed my mobo and Win 10 Creators does not activate anymore NOR does the telephone call to MS fix this in a second. Nearly 1 hour on the phone and they insisted that the "upgrade" from a legit Win 8 Pro does not include changing hardware (anymore, because this alsways worked for me since decades, I just tell them tha my mobo is "fiat" (busted) and that was enough to activate. Now they say: after the 1st year windows 10 does not include changing hardware. Anyway i protested a lot and minutes later they wrote me an email (also a first time!) that on monday they will revise my case!!!! OMG FTW... they are willingly selfdestroying their business. I have paid them so much, OS's, Office, hardware... and then this! :-(

They did the same thing with their other OSes. They tend to drop support rather quickly for the base OS without Service Packs.

This is a bit weird, 1607 has been a mandatory update for a while now, so the only machines still running the launch build will be ones without a network connection, which won't get or require these patches.

Or people like me that manually shut those stupid assed updates off in the registry. Nothing is more fun than doing critical work, playing a game, or running a benchmark and that update/telemetry shit bogs down your SSD and connection to 100%.

That's why there is an "Active Hours" setting now. It won't do updates during the 12 hours you set. So you can force the updates to happen when you aren't likely to be using your computer.

Even still, at this point there is no reason to have updated to the Anniversary Edition manually, even if you have forced disabled the updates.

Back then I complained that There Will be shit coming for Win10 users and people were laughing. Now im stuck to Win7 and no problems at all. Good to see I was right about all that Microsoft crap. Its marketing gimmick....to save money on engineers/programmers they just thrown free Win10 and let folks get all thé problems to just use it after to make patches.

What's wrong with telling people to stop using the original version of 10? 7 pre-SP1 does the exact same and wont let you install any updates other than SP1 until SP1 is installed. Oh god forbid M$ has updates that actually fix things and then makes people use them instead of complaining how terrible it is without them.

Go ahead and try and turn off updates on your Iphone or Android product with the original unmodified software. The only time they will is when they go obsolete (2 years after they come out at that).

Support for Windows 7 ended years ago. It's no different than how they are handling Windows 10, and how they handled Windows 8 and how they handled Windows Vista and...well you get the point.

Or some of my clients for example, who turn on their computer every 1-2 months like clockwork, and then don't give it time to update... heh. More of these exist than you might imagine.

I agree any outrage over this particular case is silly. There are other things to be legitimately mad about with 10 that Microsoft will hopefully work on. This is not one of them. This is how things are supposed to work.
