M.2 generates virtually no heat outside of its NAND chip. You can't feel the heat unless you touch the NAND.

Gigabyte did it with the Z170 SOC Force and Asrock with Z170 Extreme 7+. This is pretty much guaranteed a Z270-board.

So it's nothing new really.

3 slots now. Who said raid 0 :D?

Maybe its time to upgrade now, but in the other hand i all ready have a fully working m.2 nvme ssd in my old x58 setup and i been told you cant really feel a difference with m.2 ssd in raid any eay.

So many choises and yet no good reason to upgrade for me yet. X58 has all i need.

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)

And its smokin on a lot of them. 950 pro.. check. Rd400 check... hellfire.. check...

Anyway, there are several boards out in x99 and z170/270 flavor with three m.2 slots. The problem is the bandwidth. Many, not all, the 3rd slotd, doesnt support the full 4x/32Gbps and shares with sata. Habe to pay attention if you need all 3 full speed.

They are smoking hot on the chip only and cools down rapidly in a sec or two once load is off. They literally don't radiate the heat.

Well, one is in a jenky spot under the gpu, its 40c... the others (different system) are on the m.2 dimm on the apex with airflow and sit in the mid 30s. They are warm to the touch on that chip indeed, when idle. When these were under the msi shield thing, that sink was warm all the time with nothing covering it.

I actually remember a thread about this, I was so surprised that someone actually made a heat spreader for an M.2 solid-state drive. Much to my surprise several people posted that there was some significant heat in combination with certain build configurations

The worst placement for M.2 is ITX where it's often located on bottom of a motherboard where there is near zero airflow.
I think Asrock is the first to have M.2 on surface of ITX with Intel 200 chipset.

And then there are laptops that use M.2 a lot. They get no air flow in there. But overall heat doesn't seem to be of a major issue.

Edit: Asrock ITX mobo picture added.

At least they included jumper switches so you can switch them off so you have PCI-e lanes for a GPU or two.

That's an unfortunate placement in general. All the heat from graphic cards gets dumped on M.2 SSD's which are already very toasty to begin with... The M.2 "Shield" acts more like heat collector than dispersing mechanism...

NVMe is a slot now? :p

Personally I'd be happier if all the board manufacturers started putting the M.2 slots on the reverse of the board. Would prevent heat from any components (e.g. GPUs) from interfering plus it would easily allow 22110 drives.

I'd prefer 1 full PCI-E x16 riser card with let's say 4 M2 slots on it...

BTW: the photo of the best mobo ever... I think it will be a Z270. Asus has various boards in the 500-600 bucks regio.... MSI not. I am a newly-wed owner of a Z270 Xpower which is their present top of the line board, for half the price.

That includes the ASUS tax just for the name, not for quality.
Edit, just had a look at MSI's site, and they show a Z270 Gaming M7 with three M2 slots also.
https://www.msi.com/Promotion/powered-by-msi-pc

Asus ROG includes software and bios that is, by much, more elaborated than MSI (I see it these days as I went from ROG to MSI). That alone could be well worth 100 bucks more. But if you don't have exactly the same goals as their ROG e-peen team (for example, you want, not records, but a 24/7 overclock) it is worth nothing!
My MSI z270 Xpower also has 3x M2 slots. Not planning on using them anytime, as i invested heavily in fast storage and a roomy case over the last 2 years.
