The most potent of the bunch will be the Core i9-7920X (Skylake-X). That’s right, Intel is tossing the Core i7 branding aside to make way for a new tier of high-performance processors. The Core i9-7920X has 12 cores (24 threads) and 16.5MB of onboard L3 cache. It supports 44 PCIe lanes, but we unfortunately don’t have any word on clock speeds at this time.

Moving down the line, there’s the Core i9-7900X, which has 10 cores (20 threads), 13.75MB of L3 cache and 44 PCIe lanes. The processor has a base frequency of 3.3GHz, and can reach 4.3GHz with Turbo 2.0 and 4.5GHz with Turbo 3.0.

The Core i9-7820X and Core i9-7800X have eight cores and six cores respectively, and see their PCIe lanes cut down to just 28.

I sure wish tech authors would stop editorializing and making stuff up and just report the facts. Intel is not "tossing aside" anything. They are adding a new top tier line of processors. The i7 branding will remain and will gain new members.

As the WCCFTech article correctly notes, the i7 branding will simply no longer be used to denote their high-end processors. That does not mean i7s will be downgraded - it means whole new line will be added above the i7.

Thanks Ryzen. Anyway, if the rumour is true, their performance and price will be stellar, I guess.

So, current HEDT's will be called Core i9 from now on and Core i7 will remain for the normies. Also, who wants to be AMD will introduce top of the line products as R9 ? :D

Thanks Ryzen. Anyway, if the rumour is true, their performance and price will be stellar, I guess.

No "thanks Ryzen" here. Both companies have been planning a high-core lineup for years.
AMD, as the smaller company ("underdog"), simply had to be the first to release. We know they did it a bit early (the platform is "maturing" now).

But yeah... the performance should be excellent. Just looking at the core count and clocks (without any IPC gain), i9-7920X could be 30-40% faster than i7-6950X... Massacre...
Price will be way higher than Ryzen 7, but it won't be "for the same performance" anymore. Intel is stretching what's possible now.
And with 12C at the top-end, they might offer 8C for around $500-600 to directly compete with AMD.

This is also a very interesting situation when we think about the upcoming HEDT Ryzen (Ryzen 9 perhaps). It's very unlikely that it'll use AM4 - they'll possibly go for Naples' socket. This could lead to very weird product segmentation in the red camp... AM4 is great - covering up to 8C/16T. But going up to the rumored R9 could be a big investment.
In the Intel world we'll have a high-end LGA2066 stretching from 4C/8T to 12C/24T HEDT and further to Xeons...

I think I'll sit here and wait patiently. Maybe the only upgrade I'll consider in the short term is a 4k monitor. I'm all for a HEDT battle between Intel and AMD, it should keep prices interesting if they're even close to equally matched. :)

Great, will cost arm and a leg and there won't be a single thing thing you can do and can't on a i7/Ryzen build.
For those that will point out that some people need power like that, I would rather buy something like this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Powere...-10-Core-128gb-3x-146gb-10k-H700/292104141792
40c/80t 128GB RAM monster for $719.
I'd get one of these, but it says "cat not included", dammit. :(

I suggest you don't worry so much about the price. Intel must be quite happy with 6950X sales.

There exist people that can utilize the potential of such CPU. Let them have it.
And as for the "you can do the same things on something else" theory - for the most part I agree! You should spread it all over the Ryzen threads. :D

For those that will point out that some people need power like that, I would rather buy something like this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Powere...-10-Core-128gb-3x-146gb-10k-H700/292104141792

I really doubt that companies will be interested in a used, 5-years-old, discontinued product. And it's also quite unlikely that a consumer (assuming he can live with the "mileage" of this thing) will accept the 2U form factor and a 1100W power supply (I assume it's been chosen for a reason)...

I feel they are trolling AMD into naming their high-end procies to r9. It would cause confusion to consumers if they're getting a CPU of GPU. But I guess it wont matter since GPU is at RX now.:)

Because there have never been R3, R5 or R7 GPUs made by AMD, right?

I sure wish tech authors would stop editorializing and making stuff up and just report the facts. Intel is not "tossing aside" anything. They are adding a new top tier line of processors. The i7 branding will remain and will gain new members.

As the WCCFTech article correctly notes, the i7 branding will simply no longer be used to denote their high-end processors. That does not mean i7s will be downgraded - it means whole new line will be added above the i7.

What you just described is a downgrade. i7s were the top of the line, if i9s are added they won't be anymore. Intel could just move i3s to quad core, i5 to six core, and i7 to what the i9s are going to be. Instead they decide to play these marketing games.

In the Intel world we'll have a high-end LGA2066 stretching from 4C/8T to 12C/24T HEDT and further to Xeons...

Except the Xeon's won't work with the X299 chipset of course...

Also, why two thread on this topic?

What's confusing about it?

Core i3 - Budget
Core i5 - Mainstream
Core i7 - High end
Core i9 - Enthusiast (HEDT)

If anything, it now makes more sense since they've split up high end and enthusiast in the Core i7 range.

But there is a huge demand for Intel's cheap 2C/4T (and 2C/2T as well) CPUs.
It'll get even higher now as AMD seems to have ignored the sub-$100 market in the Zen era. Cheapest Ryzen we've seen in leaks (R3 1100 or 1200) is rumored to cost $129.

Introduction of i9 seems like a great move. For last few years the i7 naming stretched from high-end consumer stuff to top HEDT parts. It's about time to divide it.

Except the Xeon's won't work with the X299 chipset of course...
Why not? Source?
Also, why two thread on this topic?
I don't know. Maybe because it's important news? How many Ryzen threads do we have? :D
