So, DiRT Rally was released for Linux on March 2nd.

For those racing heads among you out there......@erocker I'm looking at you. ^_^

Would you be interested or willing to try a dual boot to see how good this is? Would something like this be worth dual booting or switching altogether? Hitman first season recently came to Linux as well. and Warhammer 40K III is releasing soon too.

The current system reqs are:

The minimum system requirements for DiRT Rally on Linux:

  • Intel Core i3-4130T or AMD FX6300
  • 8GB RAM
  • 1GB NVIDIA 650ti or AMD R9 270 graphics card (or better)
  • Ubuntu 16.10 (64-bit)
The recommended system requirements for DiRT Rally on Linux:

  • Intel Core i7-4770
  • 8GB RAM
  • 4GB NVIDIA 970 graphics card (or better)
  • Ubuntu 16.10 (64-bit)
In both instances NVIDIA graphics cards need to be running driver version 370.28, while AMD graphics cards require MESA 13.0.2+.

I'd be possibly interested in dual booting more again. I still have a couple Linux servers I use daily, and some Ubuntu installs I fire up from time to time. But I don't invest as much time into Linux as I did. I am hoping to see this trend continuing. Need more big titles like this showing it can be done.

I still have hope for Linux gaming, though one must be extremely patient even in this day and age...

Man I dunno because I hear there is problems with F.P.S. in Linux but admit I have never tried before. Good to see this trend though.

Just Ubuntu? That's the other problem with Linux. 700 trillion distros and then just one gets support for something. Things will never change unless they somehow sort this out.

its not just Ubuntu. They just list Ubuntu as it is the most widely known distro. As long as you meet the specs and have a relatively recent kernel, you are fine.

I do not own this particular game (only the first GRID), but having more AAA games for Linux(even the older ones) makes it more and more appealing as a gaming platform.
Out of 70 titles in my steam library there are at least 30 that have decent Linux ports. I'd love to see more.

BTW, DiRT Rally was ported by Feral Interactive: same guys that ported Alien Isolation, Tomb Rider, Deus Ex: MD and many more. I think the only port from Feral that sucked was Shadow of Mordor (rushed in a couple of weeks by WB Games), the other ones were perfect.

I think gaming on Linux hugely depends on Vulkan reception on Windows. If we get great Vulkan reception on Windows, this means they'll be relatively easy to port to Linux, allowing more games to end up there. Besides, Vulkan performs great on both AMD and NVIDIA so the biggest winners in the end are actually gamers.

"Games like this" No.

Unless every game is released cross operating system (well, barring unless a company like EA decided to not follow suit because who gives a shit) I will never switch over to a Linux based OS full time. Hell even for work I much prefer using OSX because everything just works.

I've been working with windows for a long time and for me it always works and I find OSX to be a bit limiting for me but hey to each their own. I also feel Linux is limited too but things like this game and the others are bringing it about.

It doesn't take games to convince me to use an OS that doesn't decide to randomly install updates and brick your install on its own timetable. However, more games in Linux is definitely an added bonus.

no nobody cares game is over two years old
this kind of mediocrity being put on a a pedestal is exactly why Linux will never be a viable gaming platform

as the saying goes a day late and a dollar short

with WSL I no longer have any need for a dedicated linux machine

I think that if the Linux was Ă  paying Platform they could have the money to hire programers for fast coding of Games and not many years after. But thats against principle of Linux and other free plateforms.

Ehm, developers working for Linux like the kernel, or the mesa drivers get paid, remember that a lot of companies are part of the FSF or are interested in having good support in Linux, even Microsoft has assisted with the kernel.
The porting problem is a matter of executive meddling on a vicious circle. Why would I spend money on a 1% user share? Oh Windows sells more because all applications are only developed for it! Oh, my new notebook comes with Windows! Oh, my Office free trial has ended, time to buy a subscription plan on 365 instead of using LibreOffice or any other free alternative!

Any game ported to Linux is good news, and maybe Dirt Rally serves as a first step to release the rest of the Dirt series. Remember that is because of us the users that Windows is becoming more closed than MacOS.

I removed Windows over a year ago and have no regrets. Never again will I install microsoft software on my computer. I have 117 linux native games. Playing Company of Heroes 2 and Deus Ex Mankind Divided currently.

I only tested it on NVidia cards(GTX750Ti/760/950). The performance comparing to windows was very-very bad, but the game was stable and playable.
In contrast, Alien Isolation and Tomb Rider ported by the same company had almost no significant FPS difference, except Low settings (at very high framerates, which meant nothing in terms of gameplay at typical 60-75Hz)
I'll give it a try again, as soon as I get my 1060. Maybe WB finally fixed it.

Gaming on Linux looks promising, I've played some Alien isolation on linux with the 1800x and GTX580 (still waiting on vega!), it played flawlessly, no crashes, no fps dips, buttery smooth.. If they start bringing out more AAA games for Linux I would will play more games on it. :)

There already are quite a few AAA games out for Linux. And there are several more on the way.

Warhammer 40K DoW III for instance is coming to Linux. AFAIK it is coming at the official launch.

Many developers have been having issues with Nvidia when porting to Linux. If the game has vulkan, the porting is usually a cynch. AMD support on Linux has drastically improved ever since they had the majority of their graphics stack integrated into the Linux Kernel. Now, you can play pretty much anything without having to install the binary blobs unless you need very specific features usually reserved for jobs like OpenCL renders.

Shogun 2 is coming to Linux. Day of Infamy. Cities Skylines Mass Transit (already here). The next Life is Strange title. Everspace is on hold due to Nvidia driver problems........odd, didnt it used to be AMD that had shitty drivers? Cossacks 3 is coming.

Hitman is on Linux, Civilization 6, XCOM 2, Deus Ex: MD, Rocket League, Mad Max, Dying Light : The Following, SOMA, All Valve games, Pillars of Eternity, Metro series (redux included), Borderlands Presequel and 2, need I go on? The list is quite extensive and the list keeps growing.

The biggest issue is that Developers dont see the market share they want to produce for the platform. But, if no one releases the latest games on that platform, then no one will want to buy them on said platform. No one will switch to said platform if the games they play dont have a linux install option. Humble Bundle showed that if you develop for Linux, gamers will pay handsomely for it. It is a catch 22. dont release for the platform, no market share. no market share, no one want to release for it.

Maybe WB finally fixed it.[/QU

The worse performance is because of converting DX11 to OpenGL, Feral is working on Vulkan implimentation, which is already available on Mad Max. The whole situation will be much better once/if developers start using Vulkan. The games are all playable, so I don't particularly care if the FPS isn't as high, for me it is still better than having to run windows.
