Xeon or i5 for Socket 1150 build?

Hello everybody

I was looking at getting a cheap motherboard and i5 CPU for a budget gaming build, but I've just come across a YouTube comment (I know right) saying that socket 1150 Xeons are similar to i7's, but cheaper.

Is there any truth to this, or is it garbage?

I found a Xeon E3 1220V3 3.1GHz for $150 / £115. i5 4590 is $140 / £107, so there's not much in it.

What would you do? :)

Also, do the Xeons have OC capability?

It is true for new generation. Not so much for Haswell generation since it's few years old now.

They're the same. Look up Intel Ark for detailed specs. That particular Xeon is the same as a Haswell i5 clocked at 3.1 Ghz.

EDIT: i gave bad info. what i should have said is that the xeon is 4 core 4 thread and 200mhz slower. the i5 has as many cores and threads but is faster in this regard.

i would still say the xeon in this case because you said budget build and in the long run i dont think either proc will out do the other.

edit: yes they are more like the i7s in that they both have 4 cores 8 threads.

my bad and thanks. i swear i saw 4 cores 8 threads on the intel site, just checked and you are right. will correct previous post.

You need 1230v3 to get 4 core 8 thread.

get yourself the i5 they pretty capable and excellent for gaming, add 16Gb ram a decent video card and call it done!

i own a E3 1231 V3 Xeon (1150) 4 core 8 thread , And it performs comparably to the 4770, and 4790's ive had in my possession.

keep in mind 1150 Xeons lack iGPU's , so you'll need a dGPU, and you wont have that iGPU to fall back on, but mine cost me $230 iirc, and i bought it BNIB from newegg.

the xeons are clocked considerably lower tho you might be-able to squeeze 4Ghz out of it depending on the boards tolerance for blkclock shenanigans

if you aren't hard core gaming at below 1440p then go for it

If you're looking to build a cheap gaming rig and are already considering a Xeon, how about a Ryzen 5 1600 (X)? AM4 mainboards are super cheap, too.

I don't want to play the devil's advocate here, but you might wanna give it a thought...
