TBH they always were overrated, and I'm sure Bioware themselves don't mind being dragged around.

So I guess you never played Baldur's Gate, KOTOR and the first Dragon Age. Some of the the best RPGs ever made.

I'm sorry you wanted to be a bad-ass commander taking on massive enemies and saving the galaxy? Oh our bad, we decided counselor/human resources professional would make a much better game. Good luck working out these random peoples problems.

Mass effect has been like that from the get go (released 2007), EA got their grubby paws on them a year later in 2008.

Short answer: sure, if your idea of a good RPG are those games, in which case ... vOv.

Slightly longer answer: The pinnacle of the Infinity Engine is Planescape. That is a fact, unless you really love the combat system in which case it would be Icewind Dale. Kotor 2 is so much better than the first game in every way except as a game, which is just tragic and is acutally a great example of terrible publishers. Kotor was actually not bad, but it's essentislly a bog standard Star Wars tale whereas Kotor2 essentially is about the very basics of the Star Wars universe and its concepts, and has one of the best characters ever written in gaming, and she happens to be an old woman. Bioware couldn't pull that off to save their lifes. DA O was passable, and even good at times, but marred by day one DLCs and more importantly, a Bioware penned story which has a tendency to be forgettable, and annoying hero-characters (Carth Onasi and the blonde dude in DA:O comes to mind, one could argue they are well written if it truly was their intention to create selfish pricks), not to mention the absolutely retarded romance bits, which are written entirely by tweens or people with a tweens understanding of sex and relationships.

I'm sure DA:O had some memorable moments, but I can't quite recall them despite finishing the game twice. I liked the dwarf bits, and I did like how the elves were essentially a slave class. But otherwise ... ye olde saving the world story, YOU ARE THE CHOSEN ONE, LUKE, and ... sex, I guess?

DA:O has one epic moment for me and that's when you can force the bastard Alistair to marry his brothers widow. You have to kill the traitor yourself to make it happen but to be honest I never liked his character concept in the first place. "What's that? Demons at the gates? Ah what better time than now to betray everyone to their doom? Including myself and my daughter of course."

Also ME:1 had elements of it, but there were no associated consequences for simply not talking to anyone. ME:2 pretty much made the final mission impossible without balancing the crew at least a little bit. Which mean loooooong conversations with boring flat characters and random sidemissions for people you didn't like (otherwise you might miss out on a required upgrade to the normandy) as well as the propensity for killing off the characters you liked the most, first.

Don't get me wrong I love a game with different outcomes, but couldn't we shoot more and talk less? I do not care about your catfight drama, I have a galaxy to save!

This. It made DA:I unplayable for me because of this, Skyrim's main quest was rubbish because of this. I want to RPG as a peasant with no heritage, is that too much to ask?

I always just skipped the main quest for that reason and just explored dungeons. Unfortunately they level lock the dungeons in vanilla skyrim which really ruins the fun in the late game.

Excited for a new one. DA:O was the best in terms of the mechanics and story, DA:2 favored awesome looking fights and effects over the mechanics and story took a step back but still a good experience. DA:I was like the combination of a great story, mechanics(although not as complex as DA:O), and awesome looking fights.

DA:I is my favorite out of the three

There's a lot of back-story lore that is yet to be explored and revealed. like the black city, and the different deities/gods in the game. I'm fine with DA:I-like gameplay. They just need to continue the story and make it even more awesome.

Then Live Another Life mod in Skyrim is for you.

This, what made the game better was mods. If something bothers you in the game, like a petpeeve. There's a high chance that there's a mod to fix it. in that case, that mod lets you start as a total nobody with nothing special about you.

although I would agree that games should let you start as a total nobody, DA:O kinda had that option, as you can choose your origin story. DA:2 character has nothing special about him, except for the fact that he came from a noble family. DA:I was the only character who got special abilities making him the 'chosen one' type.

About EA...
I love EA access on the Xbone...$30 a year
Not exactly a EA hater... I'll probably get it on PC

https://www.origin.com/usa/en-us/store/origin-access

So your paying MS fee and on top of that a EA fee ?, if so fck that and dam it should be out of this world. Then again $30 a month is frigging crazy and thank you much for reminding why i have PC's.

All 3 witcher games by CDR were all awesome games, as i said before if only CDR could get the IP :p. So no not always the case but yes i get were your coming from.

Mass Effect would have to be another, although seems like they fixed stuff that annoyed you then changed some thing else you liked. But overall the 3 games were solid titles.

no you don't have to have Gold... And it's only $30 a year for EA Access.. It's the same price as Origin Access... Both are equally worth it imo

no... the thing is... i still play mario sometimes, and it is still fun... i play tetris, and it is still awesome... i still play their old games and they are still fun. I play their new stuff.... and... it is grindy and boring. Thats not expectations, just a bad game.

If they came out with that stuff in the first place then it would still be bad - bad story, repetitive game play <> fun. There are countless games that did that, no one remembers them. If you play castle wolfenstein it's still fun because its a good game - simple, well designed fun - not everyone enjoys it, but the people who do really like it. The new games are crap blobs that no one really hates and no one really likes.

Granted this is mostly directed to the Dragon age series; There is nothing inherently wrong with their new games... they are just crap blobs that EA pops out of their game hole.

:shadedshu: I thought they killed it with DA: I.

They already killed it with DA 2. And they did very well at it, too. DA:I had nowhere to go, the combat was already super shit, so they added a super generic game world to fit.

But hey at least you can port it easily to consoles now

the problem is that we had zero expectations then vs now.
Nothing pleases us anymore.

I disagree. The problem today is that creativity in games is barely ever rewarded when you look at the big publisher releases. That is precisely why indie gaming is growing so much and why it has known so many sleeper hits in the past years. The big AAA releases use the marketing storm and shortly after release, shit falls silent because the marketing stopped, people binge played the crap out of it and they're fed up some 10-50 hours later. Next! Everything is easy as hell, repetitive, often incoherent Hollywood cliche babble, and puzzles consist of connecting the super obvious dots.

And then you fire up something like TW3 and you actually don't see yourself skipping every other dialogue because all of a sudden its NOT generic, its original, its creative, its got a fucking soul to it and you can feel this when you play.

That, is the key difference. Not 'expectations'. Intelligent storytelling and good game design never cease to amaze, if that were the case, nobody would watch movies or read books.

New games are amazing!

And i know Dragon Age Origins was good. Inquisition was very good to. It had much more character development and much more dialog. And the combat was much better.
Yes it was hard to get the gear. In DA Origins no one got the npc top grade store items without cheats. You had to farm forever, and as the game was made it kinda was not that easy. Point you could still finish the game in high difficulty even without the top items. 30k for an amazing ring in the store, you played 1 week and all you had was 4k.
I finished Inquisition 2 times. First go around i did not farm for 1 second. Second time it was harded cuz i wanted to be.

Bottom line can not w8 for the new DA!

Well boom spot on I'd say. New games CAN be amazing and that Total War screenshot to me is a perfect example of how a franchise can ALSO evolve, how it can grow and after many many sequels finally finds a setting and formula that works miracles (TW Warhammer is that game IMO, I would easily put it on par or above Shogun 1, but at the same time, I would still enjoy firing up Shogun 1 for all its atmosphere and same good mechanics) and tickles everything a strategy game should tickle, while executing its mechanics very well.

But I really have trouble counting Inquisition among them. Consider also how different the game has become from Origins, it turned from being a highly strategic live chess game with customizable characters and incredible depth, into a 'mash three buttons' clickfest where the only choices are in how you progress, not what you progress towards (every character has a very limited skill tree, choice is narrowed down to an order of picking available skills really, no real freedom but just the illusion of it). The strategy part is completely marginalized, the customization is marginalized (simplified) and at the same time the game had some sort of identity crisis trying to fit MMO theme park nonsense into a single player experience.

Mass Effect kind of did the same thing as the Inquisition route, I just finished Andromeda, and it is Inquisition in space, same concept, same ingredients, more focus on combat with less chance for real choices (respecs are readily available, no class restrictions) same generic shit maps with some side quests, overall writing in the game is super basic and makes you want to spacebar through all the time. While the early Mass Effect wasn't a matured concept, it DID offer some really cool moments, it DID have memorable characters, it DID have soul and it DID show a dedication from the developer in shaping a new world and a very cool setting. In Andromeda, all of that is taken as a given, and no new cool sauce is added. You colonize a new galaxy, and your nemesis is some weird Warframe- Grineer looking badguy (no really, go look at them side by side, even the assets are similar) who above all seems rather pathetic and not at all threatening.

In the end it shows how different people can look at the same game, I guess :)
