Hello,

I am looking for an AM4 motherboard which will be used with a Ryzen 1600 (non X) CPU. I plan on doing some overclocking; I would like to get it up to 3.7-3.8 GHZ. I will also need 16GB of DDR4 RAM. I am trying to keep the price as low as possible (around $100 for the motherboard if possible). Other general features I am looking for in a motherboard:

- Stability & easy to use BIOS / UFEI.

- Two M.2 slots would be great, but I understand AM4 boards can't run both at full speed and often disable SATA slots when both are in use. Not a huge deal, but since I don't use a DVD drive anymore and I will be switching to M.2 SSDs in the future more than one M.2 can be useful...

- 8 USB ports on the rear.

- mATX or full size ATX. I will consider both form factors.

- Anything else I should keep in mind?

Realistically, what are my options for getting a stable OC at around 3.7-3.8? I was initially trying to get by with a B350 type motherboard but I have seen mixed responses from others. Are there any decent, $100 B350 motherboards that can support such an OC? If not, what are the best low priced x370 boards?

Originally I was looking at these two B350 boards due to their lower prices:

MSI B350M BAZOOKA:
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA1N85N88075&cm_re=MSI_B350M_BAZOOKA%3a-_-13-144-027-_-Product

AM4 ASRock AB350M Pro4:
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod...AM4_ASRock_AB350M_Pro4-_-13-157-762-_-Product

X370 wise, these are the cheapest options I found:

MSI X370 GAMING PLUS AM4 AMD X370:
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod...cm_re=x370_motherboard-_-13-144-030-_-Product

ASRock X370 Killer SLI/ac AM4 AMD Promontory X370:
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod...cm_re=x370_motherboard-_-13-157-769-_-Product

Are any of these listed motherboards stable and able to deliver a solid 3.7-3.8 GHZ OC for the Ryzen 1600?

I am not sure what RAM to get for those or other boards. Initially I was looking at the CORSAIR Vengeance LPX CMK16GX4M2B3000C15:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod...r_Memory_Vengeance_lpx-_-20-233-852-_-Product

Is that a decent kit? Again, I'd like to save as much as possible on the RAM. I prefer smaller profile heat spreaders so they don't interfere with a CPU cooler. Any other speeds, latency or manufactures I should look at?

Spec wise this is what my PC has:
EVGA Supernova G3 650
GTX 1070
2x SATA SSD
2-3x HDD
4x case fans, 2x CPU fans
Win 10 Pro

Any advice will be appreciated.

Note: I posted a similar topic last month, but decided to wait for more BIOS revisions/updates so I am hoping the situation has changed.

IF you want OC'ing you cant go with the cheapest boards available. Reminder:You get what you pay for. Find any and all boards that have all your desired features and weed out all the cheapest boards first and then the most expensive boards, choose from the rest. You should do some research into the quality of the board you might actually buy. A good mid-range board might have better caps/VRM than an upper end board.

a 370 boards may have more "stuff" to offer than a 350 board, look into this too.

Or, you can just buy the board someone in this thread might tell you to buy. It wont be me.

i know someone with the asrock killer sli/ac and it works great. overclocks without any issues and has not had any problems with his memory. as stated above, avoid the cheaper boards if you are trying to overclock.

edit: i personally would get the asrock killer sli/ac. i've seen it in action and it works flawlessly. plus the wifi and bluetooth module adds to its value. not to mention the 8+4 power phase. i would strongly recommend going with this board.

Thanks for the reply, I am strongly leaning towards that board. My problem is finding RAM in the QVL list. Doesn't look like the CORSAIR Vengeance LPX CMK16GX4M2B3000C15 is on there, and not seeing much else in terms of lower priced (~$100) RAM kits on the list.

Thanks, I am reading the Corsair Vengeance 3200 runs well at 2933 as well on that board. I am heavily leaning towards the ASrock X370 Killer as I can find the Corsair RAM for around $100. Just a bit worried though as it isn't on the QVL list, but neither is that Mushkin kit.

The board doesn't seem to have any issues pushing the CPU up to your goal, most of the boards seem to handle that fine.

For ram, no those wont do well. Get samsung -b based memory. Gskill has several kits that are AMD specific and fit the build.

part of the reason for recommending that board is their appears to be almost no difference between it and the fatal1ty other than audio and lan.

ive also read and heard that samsung -b based memory are most compatible.

Outside of Gskill, what other brands are Samsung - B based?

MSI B350 Tomahawk Arctic or regular black B350 Tomahawk are very good motherboards which will not empty your pocket. Asrock X370 Killer would be my choice but only if paired with Ryzen 7 CPU. For Ryzen 5 (non X version), a B350 motherboard is the best match.

If you want compatible RAM with AM4, look no further than G.Skill Fortis or G.Skill Flare X. Ripjaws V will also work, but they aren't specifically designed to match AM4 platform.

Only specific ripjaws work with ryzen correctly. Starting with the 3200 cl14-14-14 stuff.

It isn't Samsung -B so it isn't hitting anything good.

Will this RAM kit work for the ASrock X370?

Not seeing it anywhere in the QVL.

To be honest, I've yet to see much of any of the approved kits for sale. Just trying to figure out what may work with what has been a pain in the ass. I just hope assembling it will be a little more straight forward. Or I'll just issue charge backs on everything. Getting too tired to deal with lazy computer hardware / software engineers. If AMD / ASrock / Corsair / Gskill wanted to shoot themselves in the foot that is their problem, and I'll do everything I can to avoid paying for their laziness and shoddy documentation.

Kind of wish I bought the cheaper AB350M then. But it is too late. X370 Killer has arrived. Took newegg just around 1 day after ordering from them to ship it to me. One of those times I wish shipping was slower! Well, this is a higher end board I suppose. Not bad for free shipping.

Quick question. For dual channel I should install the RAM in A_2 and B_2 correct?

Trying to decide on a CPU cooler, and many of them tend to cover the first RAM slot.

Anyone have any experience getting an AM4 bracket from Cryoirg or Reeven? Thinking of getting an H7 or Justice respectively, and I would have to request one as they are not included. Wondering how long I'd have to wait to receive those. If it takes them weeks (free upgrade, so I can't imagine they use fast shipping) then I may go with the Be Quiet Pure Rock just to get everything installed and done.

I always knew I was going to buy a b350 board cause the overclocking differences in them and the high end x370 boards are negligible due to the limited overclockability of the Ryzen chips, I still ordered the wrong one and wanted the AB350 Pro4 not this one, but so far I really have no complaints about it, got a nice stable 3.8ghz OC on the 1600 and 2933mhz RAM without trying, sure, I could push the 1600 to 3.9, maybe even 4.0 but it seems those small 100mhz increases do require a lot more tweaking/voltage which I just can't justify the effort for the end product.

Either A_1+B_1 or A_2+B_2 for dual channel. Dont be sad about getting that board cause it really is a good board. The wifi+Bluetooth adds to the overall price and its an 8+4 phase board. the fatality gaming k4 board is the same thing just with a different audio and Ethernet but the gaming k4 don't come with wifi+bluetooth.

i'm not sure we have to worry about memory compatibility anymore as these bios updates keep coming

not that everything's easy currently, but over the next couple months we should be seeing high frequency (over 3ghz) run fine without having to find samsung b

if your 'overclock' is going to be about the same as 1800x's speeds & power usage, then i dont see much reason for the mobo to have a problem handling it, or even 1600's included cpu cooler

8 rear ports (not front panel?) sounds unusually high, plus you can use hubs... unless you have an actual demanding use case like several usb monitors

A very decent, $100 B350 motherboard you are looking for is ASUS PRIME B350-PLUS
