Two 16-core AMD Threadripper Parts Listed Online

Damn, the price is what I wanted to know the most. I really hope AMD will price this very competitively, as I'm sick of seeing outrageous, eyeball-bursting $1500 prices for Intel's high-end CPU's. The monopoly must end!

I actually hope they price these over 1500dollars as a clear statement to intel that they have the cpu crown, even if only for a short while. The bank for buck is always in the second to best chip or lower. Keep in mind also a 10 core, 12core, and 14core models are likely to come out too so these need to have a place. My assumption would be 500-700 for 10 core. 700-900 for 12 cores. 900-1300 for 14. And 1300+ for 16 cores. These should all perform better than broadwell hedt as they can clock higher at the same power envelope and with more cores, so untill skylake hedt is released they have the playing field.

Plus, not all the Intel HEDT boards are over $200. There are a few decent ones for under $200. Heck, you can pick up a decent X99 board right now off newegg for $160.

Sure but, my point is that overall cost of building it is higher. It's not like entry level boards between the two have a similar price. You're getting an entry HEDT board for the cost of pretty good mainstream board.

16 cores 32 threads.. assuming these things will occasionally be expected to fire on all cylinders i do wonder how they are going to be cooled.. i struggle keeping my lowly 4 core 8 thread 7700K vaguely cool when its firing on all cylinders..

These are normal temps for our CPU. My 7700K behaves in similar fashion and I am using it under hydro H110i. I do missed my old 5930K which was overclocked to 4.2 and ran with passive Noctua NH-D14 cooler for years but it is impossible to have passive cooler with 7700K.

Unlike its counterpart it offers 44 PCI lanes from top to bottom which is fantastic. Consumers no longer have to spend on top tier SKU for 44 PCI Lanes.

To be honest the 140w tdw is really impressive for the 1998x. It's lower than the 12 core intel release iirc and it's got a lot more cores. 32 threads vs

To be honest the 140tdw on the 1998x is really impressive as it's lower than Intel's top chip that's coming out and it's got more cores. 24 vs 32 threads is like adding an extra i7 onto the amd processor.

The thing I'll miss about my asus maximus vi extreme when I sell it to get either ryzen or threadripper is all of the pcie slots, the thing has like 5 3.0 slots. The AM4 socket imo is a little on the sad side, especially with sata ports, but it shines with usb 3.1

For sure, AMD will place it on 999$ and all the others between , 499 and 999$

Oh, I know, I wasn't disagreeing with you. The X99 platform, and even the cheaper boards that I mention, still give you more for the money than a Z270 or even X370 motherboard. They have more PCI-E lanes, Quad-channel memory, and more SATA ports. The only thing you're giving up on an entry level X99 board is the flashy looking stuff like RGB and fancy looking heatsinks. But you are gaining functionality, which I'd take any day.

That said, it is true and entry level AM4/1151 motherboard can be had for under $100. You're never going to find that in the HEDT market, because they simply can't strip enough stuff off the board to make them that cheap. But, really, if you're building a decent rig that you want to last for a while, $160 on a motherboard isn't unreasonable, IMO. Especially if you're talking about putting a $350+ processor in it.

Well don't then, just get an R5 1600. Save your money for a better gfx card or wait for MOAR CORES and MOAR I/O at lower prices in a year or two.

Lol I will definitely get the 1700, I was seriously considering something more powerful. Idk, it depends on how much I can sell my current two computers for. I'm running a gtx 1080 atm, but since I'm going to buy an oculus rift and I'm looking at bundles, the 1080 ti is only like another 100-200 dollars, plus I'd get a Ryzen processor to go with it.

I do think we will see these at $999 (i.e. the old Intel halo chip price). It was painfully obvious little people bought the 6950x chips for example and AMD will want a strong push into the content creators market.

However, these are launching second behind Intel's chips, which gives AMD room to price in response. Alot of this will come down to pricing and final Intel clocks.

No you are not. If you think a 16-core should ever cost double an 8-core, you clearly are NOT aware of how prices scale lmao: Literally by definition buddy.


In fact I would say there are a couple of points you haven't realized:

1) One of the main reasons Ryzen is priced so insanely competitively so far is that one of their main points of competition in the $100 - $450 market is gaming, and this is the one place Intel is still competitive. Thus AMD had to make their CPU's an aggressive bargain.

At the $599 - $2000 market it is all about professional work, and AMD is crushing Intel is this realm. Thus AMD can price there chips much higher if they want to.


2) Intel is forced to clock their chips lower the more cores they have. Go look how lowly clocked their 10-core i7 is. This is not the case with AMD due to the CCX design of their architectures. AMD will be bringing 16 cores of 4.1 GHz against 12 cores of 3.6GHz. Furthermore AMD's CPU's are more efficient, which is again more important in this realm.

It will be a bloodbath. AMD could charge $2000 for the 12-core version and it would be completely justified. I doubt they will, but maybe reality check some of your hopes on pricing
