G.Skill Takes Trident Z Series Beyond the DDR4-4000 MHz Mark

A brief stroll through G.Skill Computex 2017 booth showed us the company's latest Trident Z series DDR4 memory kits that come with clock speeds way beyond the DDR4-4000 mark. Achieving DDR4-4000 with a 16 GB-dense module is no small feat, and G.Skill has new 2x 16 GB (32 GB) DDR4-4000 Trident Z RGB series memory kits. In the wake of the new LGA2066 platform, one can expect 4x 16 GB kits, too. These modules do DDR4-4000 with timings of 17-17-18-38 CR2T. G.Skill has three higher clock speeds targeted with its lineup, DDR4-4200, DDR4-4400, DDR4-4800, though using 8 GB modules.

The Trident Z RGB DDR4-4200 runs at 19-21-21-41, and comes in dual-channel 16 GB (2x 8 GB), and quad-channel 32 GB (4x 8 GB) and 64 GB (8x 8 GB) kits. Next up, is the Trident Z RGB DDR4-4400, with timings of 19-19-19-39, and available in the same capacities. A step higher is the DDR4-4800 Kit. This kit has the same timings as the DDR4-4400 kit, with 19-19-19-39. These four kits require Intel machines with XMP 2.0 to run at their advertised speeds.

Short answer, nope. It is only for showing off your e-peen for gaming. It might be worthwhile for non gaming uses assuming the pricing is decent

Noticeable in CPU intensive games. Here are my test with i5-6500 stock vs 4.8Ghz and DDR4-2400 to 4200.

All test with 980 Ti @ 1539/1940 2560x1440

Cities Skylines - Max Setting
Civ 6 - Max Setting
Project Cars - Max Setting except using MSAA.
GTA V - Max Setting except high grass and FXAA and using Redux mod.
TW Attila - Max Setting except MLAA.

Looks like I'm in the sweet spot zone already with my i5 6500 and 3000MHz ram.

Of course ! many AAA games benefit more from GPU. Your combo is completely fine.

I play some badly optimized games that need a lot of singlethread power so I need highest CPU clock speed and high frequency + tight timing ram.

Depends. Ryzen 8 cores show performance improvements, as the infinity fabric speed is based on memory speed. for lower core count ryzen and intel based rigs? not so much.

It is also very useful for large RTS games, even older ones like supcom eat up every GB they can, and APUs using integrated GPUs will need the fastest memory speed possible.

I am just now upgrading from an i5 -3450 and 1866mhz DDR3 to an i7 -3770 with 2400mhz DDR3..It will be a small jump but not compared to this...I need to invest in DDR4 in the near future.

I am just now upgrading from an i5 -3450 and 1866mhz DDR3 to an i7 -3770 with 2400mhz DDR3..It will be a small jump but not compared to this...I need to invest in DDR4 in the near future.

If you want DDR4 in future I suggest grabbing DDR4-3200 CL14-14-14-34 whatever brands. It carrying Samsung B-die which is good for high speed and low latency. And price is quiet affordable.

Good tests. As expected, the best PRICE/PERFORMANCE modules are the DDR4-3600 ones.
Always planed to buy those on my future upgrade.

One question thought. What mobo and chipset can support those massive DDR4-4800 kits??

I think the upcoming highly optimized X299 motherboard like Rampage VI APEX , X299 OCF , X299 SOC may handle those monster kit.

1151 with ambient cooling have a zero chance to run DDR4-4800. But DDR4-4400 is possible on Maximus IX APEX and Z170M OCF with excellent IMC.

They have done some testing and it depends some games do actually show a pretty large gain once you break 3600
