I do gaming and web development and one of my best talents is understanding usability. Honestly, keyboards these days are all miss unless you want sometime simple and mechanical.
But for the power users such as myself it's very difficult.
Look at the top of your keyboard: F1, F2, F3, F4 [space] F5, F6, F7, F8 [space] F9 F10, F11, F12
I've been using my Logitech G110 keyboard for years and was finally able to purchase a couple backups. Why do I use an old keyboard even though the keys are not mechanical?
The macro keys are positioned exactly the way they're supposed to on the left side. 2x2 to supplement the 1x4 traditional function keys. From bottom to top:
G6, G12, Back/Forward Navigation
G5, G11, Previous Tab / Next Tab
[space]
G4, G10 Close Tab, Specialized Macro
G3, G9, Restore Tab, Audio 2 Use Headset for Gaming
[space]
G2, G8 Specialized Macro, Audio 2 External Speakers
G1, G7 Dim Screen, Brighten Screen
The macro keyboards that are being released are blatantly guess layouts with macro keys and none of them are smart enough to realize computer functions are like particles: they usually come in pars (negative / positive).
Devices without physical spacing are utterly thoughtless and worthless, hence why if you're actually a power use you absolutely loathe having to use a laptop keyboard. MSI kind of put a desktop mechanical keyboard on a series of their laptops but then instead of the number pad put the track pad. ... Who is going to drop five grand on a laptop and use the track pad?
I don't need a headphone or microphone jack but competent placement of macro keys are an absolute must. And LED backlighting? Yeah, that is a must in the color I want though I don't care about Corsair's light shows, it detracts from the purpose: WTH is that key when it's dark in the room with my system? LED backlighting actually serves a purpose, just as well thought out design serves a purpose: greatly increased productivity. Add profile support so the macro keys change when a game or program is active and you have something truly useful. Power users should be designers if they comprehend that other power users have different preferences...then you have a much higher chance of creating a product that appeals to more people once they understand the added value and it doesn't have to be over a hundred dollars either but for the amount of increased productivity I'd be happy to pay the premium because time will always be worth much more than money.
