As for OP, is the 1060 6GB not an option?

That is an option. Though what I was thinking was main rig with a GTX 1070 and the other (occasional use) with a GTX 1050 Ti ...Total price tag around $550-$575

total value meaning including the shipping

I know paypal does that, but does eBay take part of shipping now too?

I think I'm going to list my Sapphire R9 290X BF4 card on eBay, they're fetching upwards of $300 right now. I'd take of the waterblock and put the reference turbo jet back on it.

Assume I pocket $250, what would be the best air cooled replacement for around $275? Seems like the answer is clearly a GTX 1060 ...any other options in that range?

Very unlikely I'd go anything more that 1900x1200 for resolution.

This will be the first NVidia card I've had in over a decade, reminds me of this:

Sold my 2 480x 8g for 800+ bought 2 980 4g refurbished at new egg for under 5 and they run Tom Clancy Wildlands much much faster and smoother. Am a AMD nut but the 480s need some Cross Fire work big time.

Where to buy? Newegg and Amazon have the highest prices now... lowest price on a 1070 is $460! 1060 6Gb for $250 Fry's has much lower prices, just over $400 for a 1070

I keep going back to this:

Well I'm not quite experienced buying hardware from foreign sites so, can't quite help you with that.

It doesn't make sense to buy the 1070 when the 1080 is only ~$50 more.
I've not heard good things about Newegg recently, where else to shop?
I continue to buy from Newegg and have had no issues. I would hate if Newegg, and their extensive search engine, went away.:cry: That's why I only use Amazon as a last resort, even though one of their distribution centers is within sight and most things arrive the next day.
Where to buy?
Fry's, TigerDirect, BestBuy.

not bad for a sidegrade .... kinda like me when i got from 290 to 980 ... unless he get that one for free as i did ... : not worth it ...

1070 at minima or nothing. (specially to replace a 290X)

1080 if at a good price .... but even .... it's not really faster than a 1070 by a lot :p

résumé: you can still keep that 290X till Vega/Volta ... nonetheless ...

Yea, the 1060 6GB is an attractive option. Problem is finding cards now... any cards over a 1050 Ti. And AMD? Forget it!

Seems like everyone is jumping on the mining wagon. I can wait...

no it's not .... unless you're highly concerned by the power consumption (more accurately ... you're on a tight budget... recommendation: wait a bit more till you can put more money from your pocket to get something better) ... if it's for gaming performances the 1060 will not give you anything over the 290X and the +2gb on it is not really an edge.

i had a 290 i got a 980 to replace it (only because i got it for free but even there it was a sidegrade ) if i had a 290X i would not even consider anything lower than a 980Ti (hence the 1070 since it's kinda a 980Ti level +2gb ) now i have a 1070 (special circumstances otherwise i would have waited the next gen )

basically you are saying that a 980 level is acceptable to replace a 290X, the only sensible upgrade (in term of performance and consumption level ) is either 980Ti (can find a sweet second hand deal probably) or 1070 (well thanks ETH ... price will rise and supply will fall .... probably )

I keep going back to this:

which shows that the 1060 is no upgrade.

Seems like everyone is jumping on the mining wagon.
yep and that's sad ... if only Nvidia and AMD thought about dedicated mining cards, before today .... that freaking plague would have not happened ...

oh lol i noticed that where i live a 290(non X ) is averaging at 250chf second hand ahahahahaha (drat if i knew i wouldn't had gifted mine to a friend when i got my 980  ) and 290X around 390-420chf (about the same in $, and about the same price of the 1070 2 weeks after launch +/- 30chf for the highest price )

Assuming I could find a 1060 6GB for the original MSRP of $250, I'd be happy with a 14% increase in framerate and put $50+ in my pocket. But the prices aren't there right now, assuming the mining craze is to blame.

That said, I'm first looking for a 1070 for my main rig, then a 1050 Ti for the occasional use rig. Assuming I can get a 1070 for around $400 and the 1050 Ti for about $150, I'll be well within my budget... walk away with about $50 extra.

well .... i would not be happy with a +14 ... i was not with the swap from the 290 to the 980 (i was slightly happy only because it was a Poseidon model and i always wanted one to try  tho the unhappiness feels came rather from the drivers than from the performance but since the 2 are linked ... you get the point ;) )

if i did go from 290 to 1070, that would've been another story  (a little bit less if i had a 290X/295X2 )

If only I had gotten that 980 Ti for $200 from EVGA. Make that TWO 980 Ti's!

Edit: Wow, the lowest price 1070 on Newegg now is $460 AR :(

Man, gotta act fast... I just had an MSI GTX 1070 GAMING X 8G in my Amazon cart for $429, before a $15 rebate. Went to check out and it's not available, sold out. That was one of W1zzards 9.8 rated cards. Oh well, going to keep looking.

Man, gotta act fast... I just had an MSI GTX 1070 GAMING X 8G in my Amazon cart for $429, before a $15 rebate. Went to check out and it's not available, sold out. That was one of W1zzards 9.8 rated cards. Oh well, going to keep looking.
aye, MSI is the way to go ... my Armor is outstanding, albeit being a lesser Gaming X (same PCB minus some component and a lesser, but good enough, cooler ) i got a sold out too on the Gaming X and i decided for the Armor.... foolish people ... they rush the top one and neglect the lesser one .... tho, that Gaming X was cheaper than my Armor

You can try sell locally with craiglist or similar method, they still sell like hotcakes due to the mining craze. If you're lucky you can fetch a 980TI, if you're really lucky maybe a 1070.

The second R9 290X sold. Minus shipping, PayPal and eBay fees, I have about $10 left  joking... about $600. Now to find a GTX 1070 and 1050 Ti.

the price is nice ... the brand a little less .... Gigabyte and Asus are in the "we got more issues than others" club followed by EVGA who is in "we were too cheap to put proper cooling on our VRM and vRAM and still make buyer pay premium" and MSI who is in the "don't look at me like that .... it was Micron's fault ... the rest of the batch is flawless"

tho you got it good on the 1060 .... next time reverse the situation ... Asus for the secondary less used rig and MSI for the primary  (well i got Asus and rarely got issues with them .... prior to the 10XX line tho )

MSI and EVGA were my first choices, but the price on the ASUS was just too attractive and the boost clock is up there.

Here's a review of the ASUS 1070: http://www.aweoftech.com/single-post/2016/08/20/ASUS-DUAL-GTX-1070-OC-Review-Benchmarks-Testing
...not a bad review, though I'm not sure of the accuracy of the statement regarding extrapolating 1080p vs 1440p

NUUUHHHHH NOT EVGA ! i don't get why people are all up for them .... the overly long warranty? that only mean issues are inbound... (well ... the heatsink issue was fun to watch) build and cooling quality? not even above other brands .... price? surely not ... they are among the most expensive where i live and bring nothing to back it up .... design? ohhh c'mon ...

:D well the review is not bad .... tho i only trust user experience on the long run .... since i got my card two weeks~ after launch i saw an humongous amount of issues report concerning Gigabyte and Asus, a little less for EVGA (no matter what, i hate them of the 3 card i had from them : 3 problematic one) and literally only one for MSI (the famous Micron bug)

You've obviously paid a lot of attention to brands. It's always changing, even with motherboards. XFX used to have a lifetime warranty on their premium cards, I pulled one with a 5870 years ago. The process wasn't easy, but I had a new card in two weeks.

What was the "Micron bug"

We shall see, I'll give an update ;) The only benchmark I can compare with the 290x's is 3Dmark Firestrike.

Edit: Oh, and the games they play. The ASUS GTX 1070 is now $50 more than when I bought it this morning.
