I'm not a big fan of burn/stress tests on any PC hardware. You never know what's going to happen.
For video cards that I fix I usually run at least 3 loops of Unigine Valley, or for low-end cards I do the same with Heaven in DX9 mode 720p windowed. That's enough to see if something is wrong. Or simply - play a modern game for a 2-3 hour stretch.
For your card - Unigine Superposition or TimeSpy will do.

With stress-tests, like furmark, intense OpenCL workloads or crypto, you may occasionally see weird stuff happening to GPU, rarely - sparks and explosions.
One of the late examples is my very own ASUS GTX950. I found out the hard way that when GPU hits 80C, the fan starts spinning at 100% and does not know how to come back to normal even after complete cool down and system restart. Had to tweak it with afterburner for a few minutes to get the fan speed back to normal auto.
Another example from last year: GTX660 (I think it was an MSI Gaming, or something like that). The VRM design on this card was cutting close to it's limits (can't remember for sure, but I think it was something like 35-40A per phase on x4 GPU phases, while using some off-brand chinese FETs), when the previous owner had decided to overclock the card w/ modded BIOS. First run of Furmark, and the card went kaboom, taking out 2 phases. The PCB was intact, so I simply replaced all of the mosfets to higher-rated equivalents. The card was fine after that, and even the VRM temperatures dropped.

That's Newegg's return policy? Asus covers the card you know after that...
I'm with @Sasqui . A new item should be tested while under the DOA policy of the retailer, which is normally faster than the RMA policies of the manufacturer. (although I recently had a motherboard replaced by MSI in 9 days, and that included 2 weekends)

So play games on it? If it doesn't catch fire it's fine.

Yes. RMA through ASUS would be painful. A swap with Newegg would be easy (I assume)

Unigen benchmarks, occt i guess.

If you are within the vendors return policy, do it that way first. Then RMA...

I think once they run out of in-house stock, 3rd party sellers step in with those inflated prices. I've seen the same thing on Amazon.

i hear you, but ive noticed these prices throughout the release of these Cards. its just that i wish there was a way for the market to become a tad more reasonable...when your GPU is 50% of Your PC's cost, IMO its out of hand. Ofc i expect it to be a expensive component, but just not 50% of entire budget expensive. maybe im just cheap. i dont know.

Id just use it for what you bought it for.
id just do this. and take good care of it in the hopes You might be able to get the Majority of Your $$ back some time down the road when you decide to Upgrade again.

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
Ordered this yesterday: ASUS GeForce GTX 1070 DUAL-GTX1070-O8G 8GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814126119

It's on the truck for delivery today!

What's recommended for burn-in testing / card stability / stress software? I want to make sure I don't have a lemon. Would like something that I can run recursively overnight or during the day. I'll use GPUz to log temps, card speed, etc.
didnt read one post in the thread...

Just use it. There is no such thing as burn in...

You want monitoring, use asus gpu tweak. You want stress testing, loop 3d mark firestrike extreme.

Now i read the thread... lol...starting to hate large forums... lol!

I've run Furmark many times on my high end cards which have proper coolers at stock speeds with no problems. They just throttle back to stay within the TDP. If overclocking, then there might be a problem so be careful then.

The OP's card has got a decent cooler too, so should be ok.

I reckon just running a AAA game benchmark in looping mode should be enough though. The likes of GTA V and Metro 2033 should do.
you do understand that when it throttles you arent testing the clocks it will boost to during gaming, right? With that understood, how is it a proper test? The thing immediately drops bins on several NVIDIA cards i tested so, its pretty much pointless to run furmark since you really CANT seem to test even stock clocks without the card dropping several bins.... so yeah, ditch furmark once and for all boys and girls. :)

yep.. he he.. but having said that the first thing i would do with any new card would be give it a quick blast of timespy or firestrike.. :)

not to stress test more just to make sure its all working okay..

i have also run furmark many time without any problems.. i dont believe the killing cards bollocks.. modern cards just throttle down the power usage.. as mine do.. they are all pretty much "idiot" proof.. its all in the bios..

trog
