I am so unlucky to only have a i5 7400 with a Msi B250 PC MATE, that means i can't oc my cpu to 4x 3.5 ghz (max turbo) 24/7.

My thoughts was to get a faster cpu, but that will cost me alot since there isn't any used i5 7600 for sale atm.

When i look at Z270 mb's im actually able to get one for as little as 100€, about the same i paid for my msi B250 PC MATE.

Will it let me oc my i5 7400 to 3.5 ghz on all cores?

In turns of cinebench R15 and passmark performance test, how much increase do you think 3.5ghz will give me? (if possible to run at 3.5ghz on all cores)

Normally it runs 3.5ghz on 1 core 3.4ghz on 2 and 3 cores and as fare as i remember (can't find the link) 3.3ghz as max ghz on 4 cores.

Even The best motherboard in the world is only gonna let you change the base clock a very very tiny amount, in other words ....no you're not going to be overclocking that CPU

Example:

Normal bass cock 100

I'm guessing the multiplier for your chip is 35 .

So you end up with 100×35 = 3500 MHz or 3.5 GHz
Some boards will let you change that base clock(100) to 102,or 105, if your really lucky 108.

But even if you're really lucky 108×35 is still only 3.8ghz :(. So not worth it

Not shure if non kaby lake k cpu's can be oc to max turbo speed on all cores, but in the past i could run my i5 4590 at max turbo speed on all cores (3.7ghz) with a Z97 mb.

I should be able to get a fair price for my current mb and a Z270 mb is only 100€, but will it make my i5 7400 run at 3.5ghz on all cores ?

the MAX single core Freq for that chip is 3.5Ghz, no board will make it run that always, becasue once the load increases beyond minimal, it will clock it down to 3.3Ghz or there about.

it seems like You want to hear something that (unless i lie) your not going to. It s not worth that swap.

Lets say that if You did the swap, and your somehow got that chip to run 3.5Ghz ALL times....what difference do You forsee that making?? do you think You will notice it? but it is going to throttle down, unless you now something i dont....that 3.5Ghz Freq is intels Single thread max, its Multithread max is like 3.3 or something. Base clock manipulation is uncertain at best just next time purchase the right hardware for what you want to do instead of trying to do it with substandard equipment for the task

It is possible to run non k haswell and other cpus at there max turbo speed on cores all the time with a z mb, i just know that you shouldn't be able to oc non k kaby lake cpu's like you can with older non k cpus using bckl, i just don't know if a z mb wil let me run my cpu at 3.5ghz on all cores.

well if You CAN do it, ill just agree, since im not aware ofthat info personally. but regardless of being able to do it, You do realize that .2Ghz will make No real difference in Perf. atleast not in real life and wont be "noticable."

what your proposing is making a HUGE change (of the PC's foundation) for a VERY minor increase in Perf.... not to mention You'll lose you Operating System Key, since its tied to Your Motherboard.

i wouldnt "upgrade" any PC for less than 20% increase in Perf....Your proposing to do it for 2%-10% maybe

well....whats your question then?

becasue it Seems to me You have your mind made up.

And regardless of how Cheap a Z mobo is, Remember to factor in the Cost of windows, since Your current one wont be switching over, (unless you pirate it ofc)

so if the Mobo is $100 add another $100 , so it will be a $200 "upgrade" side grade

Why can't i switch windows over?

I have had 2 mb's since i first got windows 10 and i never had to buy windows 10 (got it upgraded for free from windows 8.1)

You can also get a very cheap windows 10 key from ebay or from here (less than 20$) http://www.allkeyshop.com/blog/buy-windows-10-professional-cd-key-compare-prices/

I have also (when i hade to reinstall windows 10) gotten it activated by microsoft live support since it wouldn't connect to the servers and because i didn't got a key when i got the free upgrade to windows 10, logging on to my windows account wouldn't aut let me activate windows 10 (i have a legal "bought" version of vista, windows 7 and windows 8)

pretty sure it was the motherboards that allowed it - some Z170 boards with custom BIOS could Bclk fairly well at a cost (no temp readings for example), but Z270 could not.

Lots of info here, even one or two H series boards seem to be able to OC with bios mods. Not sure how relevant this is to you with kaby lake, as intel seem to be doing their best to prevent this working with refreshes.

becasue its against the EULA, unless you have a retail Version...

well, it looks like your good to go then.
best of luck with your MoBo swap
id be weary about buying Windows from non certified retailers tho....but to each His own.

http://overclocking.guide/category/intel-oc-guides/skylake-non-k-oc/

Intel forced manufacturers to put out some kind of update in their bios' which stopped over clocking on H boards. Which only made people not update to the most current bios . My last experience with that was a H97 from asrock

but i have Zero experience with newer boards, as my only involvment with them is building, and sending them to their owners :)
