Oculus Rift, Touch VR on Sale: Grab Yours While it Lasts

One of the hottest pieces of tech in the last few years, Oculus' Rift and Touch VR add-on, have entered a sale of sorts, which bring the pricing on these pieces of kit down to more humane, tenable values. If you are living over in the Great Britain side of the pond, you can grab your Rift+ Oculus Touch VR kit for a reasonable (for the tech) £399, for a limited time only. Scan.uk has you covered. On the other side of the pond (that means you, US), you can grab the same kit for an even more reasonable $399 (Newegg pricing at time of writing.)

These deals are being touted as limited to supply, and of a short duration. So if you think the hardware is at a point you're comfortable with, and that the platform and software ecosystem have matured enough for you to take the plunge, now might be the best time in a while to do so.

I am interested in this as well but I fell like better VR tech will be out in 6-12 months and this will be a bad investment now.

Vive is superior any given day. 15x20ft room scale is amazing.

I like mine a lot and think it is a great deal for $399. I would however recommend grabbing a 3rd sensor (extra $60). As of the last update Rift officially supports room scale though it unofficially has supported it since Touch launch. I have a 3rd sensor and as xmd1948 said, it is much better now with a large play area. Also, the tracking is flawless with it not matter how you turn your body. Though I don't agree that either headset is clearly better than the other, I believe each has their own plus/minus that should be considered as each individual is going to have preferences that one or the other headset offers.

I think people make a lot about the ecosystem as mentioned in this article but I have never thought of it as a negative over the past year that I've had it. I have bought a few of my games through Steam instead due to a cheaper price and it works fine. You can still (unofficially) set it up to allow the Rift to launch Steam games through the headset if you want it to.

Rumors and "inside sources" seem to say the true next gen headsets are not due until 2019. However, it seems Vive may possibly release some incremental upgrades to the existing headset before then. As for me, whoever releases the first wireless HMD with 120hz refresh screens has my money. The way things are playing out over time, I think that may be the Vive 2... but it is only a guess.

One thing I hate Oculus is the intrusion of privacy. Over reddit there are a lot of discussion about Facebook using the camera sensors to register whatever stuff they see and send them back to Facebook HQ for "analysis" Several users were able to capture the packets sent back and they were not happy about it. Basically facebook wants to treat people like their remote lab rats.

Over Valve/HTC and Facebook, I have more trust in Valve/HTC.

I do use my VR HMD for quite a lot of, hmm, adult entertaiment. So yeah I don't like people catching me with my pants down and wearing a HMD at home. Oh god the wife caught me doing this once already and let's just say it was NOT pretty.

I own a Vive and I would pick this bundle up over the Vive at this price any day. I really like my Vive, but if Oculus would have had this bundle at this price I would be an Oculus owner.. lol Plus, all the free AAA software you're picking up the HMD and touch controller for around $150 bucks. You get almost 200 dollars worth of software with the bundled Touch. I'm really thinking about picking this up... Now don't get me wrong I love my Vive, but $399 vs $799 is big. Also, once you add the DAS for 99 your setting at $899 for the Vive.

I just bought this today. I'm looking forward to it. I've wanted vr for awhile and from what I've read the touch controllers make a big difference. Plus at 400 dollars I don't think anyone can justify the vive over it, unless you've got tons of money.

Also are you guys saying that Facebook records video of me playing with it and sends it back to them, basically them placing cameras in my house to use as spy cams? Or is this an exaggeration?

This tech reminds me of 3D TV. Niche for now until the figure out how to remove the damn goggles/eye ware.

I wouldn't compare the two. 3D TVs were cool but VR is an entirely different experience. I've tried the Vive and room scale VR is amazing.

Vive might be better but for someone just getting into VR $399 is amazing deal! now later down the road when VR tech mature more and with more experience with VR if i find the product far supperior i dont mind paying premium for it. 2 cent.

I too bought on Monday, should be arriving at my house tomorrow.

I was on the fence about getting one, but I knew at the price that they were at I'd never buy in until they got cheaper. Well at $400 it came to "no brainer" territory. I can deal with Facebooks' shadiness in order to have a reasonably priced VR experience.
