Flashing Gaming X to 1080 Duke

So I have been told that the 1080 Duke is really just a gaming X card. I will confirm this later in the week when I remove the cooler and install a water block on it, but I was wondering if I could possibly flashing the gaming X bios to the duke card I have to get more performance? Because this isn't a popular card, I was wondering if maybe there was more of a power limit put on it or anything. I am not an expert at this so I can upload the information I get from GPU-z, but at the same time if I am reading it correctly, the duke card would be more powerful than the gaming X. Please give me your thoughts on whether this would work and even if I would gain anything out of it. Currently, I get somewhat good temps, 70s and I cannot push core past its stock. I only got 200 on the memory. I have seen others say they can push past 2ghz. I don't know if I just got a bad tomato or if the card has something going on in bios.

I will post pictures of my card gpuz info and bios information. The other bios is for a 1080 Gaming X. I could not find a vbios for gaming Z. Webpage for it is

https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/183802/msi-gtx1080-8192-160525

They actually have quite a few 1080 Gaming X vbios

If anyone has done this sort of thing before, let me know what you think.

Thanks

I agree. I don't see any good reason to. Especially not the one you picked with the lower board power limit adjustment range. Maybe with one that has the same adjustment range. Like this one https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/183841/msi-gtx1080-8192-160527 But I still don't think it will do you any good.

Here's a Gaming Z BIOS from the unverified list
https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/185755/185755 But, even though it has a slightly higher core clock, it has as a lower adjustment range too.

Here's a 30th Anniversary BIOS also from the unverified list with the +21% adjustment range.
https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/191062/191062

Anyway...so far as I can tell it's pointless. And you might end up with more headaches than it's worth.

I mean, give me your card before you flash and I'll even pay double the shipping costs. Saves you the trouble of hating yourself after you brick it.

If you are smart and not stupid, arrogant, pompous, you will know what's good for you, you will get the thought of bios flashing out of your head and heed our warnings or face consequences of bricking and wrath of other members. Gpus are categorized into different stocking keeping units today for a reason so no they are not the same.

Oc the card using the oc tools provided from the card maker (not nvidia) or use afterburner.

Unless you are going to hard mod this card to give it more juice, any BIOS flashing is effectively worthless - about as worthless as water cooling it.

You have been warned. If the card won't clock higher now, it won't after flashing. The board power limit is still the same, even regardless of adjustment ranges, and Pascal is a stubborn one.

Yeah see but it’s NOT a Duke...please heed the advice given. BIOS flashing is not “upgrading your drivers”?Your cards BIOS is for your card.

If anyone has done this sort of thing before, let me know what you think.

Thanks

I've flashed bios versions on GPUs a few thousand times.....but it was always a bios meant for that specific GPU. That said, they have the same PCB, fit the same waterblock, have the same connectivity.....it looks like the only difference between these GPUs is that the Gaming X has a "silent mode", which downclocks the GPU to 1733 so the fans can run less. All of the other boost clocks are exactly the same. With the same PCB, it's a good bet that they'll have the same power limit as well.

I'd just set a profile up in MSI AB....flashing looks pretty pointless.

Get GPUz open to the sensors tab, and put the card through the paces and see if you hit the power limit.....I'd do that a LONG time before even considering flashing the bios.

All Seven Replys from well respected Members Advise you "NOT TO BIOS FLASH"
I'M the eight
No one here has supported your thoughts and wishes to Flash your Bios
There is nothing to be gained and Much to lose ( a working Card).
If your Card is working Leave it alone
If there was a Problem with the card that could be fixed by flashing the Bios
you would have been informed by email from the manufacture
via the email address you used to register the guarantee/Warranty.

Good god, I feel sorry for the poor OP reading this gangbang.

I've flashed cards with similar bioses from higher binned cards, but usually it is in VERY specific cases like when you could get an extra 4gb of ram on the 480 when they first game out, and also to get pro drivers to work on non-quadro cards (that has been patched for some time).

The power limits might be a thing, but i would doubt it makes any difference from just overclocking via MSI afterburner so I wouldn't go through the effort. If they really are the same card then it would work, if they are not, then you risk bricking the card.

Gotta say the same, Pascal doesn't really benefit from extra power target. Even my 1080ti won't really go past 98% power @ 2Ghz/1.093v.

As long as voltage is locked , you can throw as much power at it and it wont do anything.
I am yet to see any Pascal card go over 2.2 Ghz with just extra power target without hard modding.

I don't get the tone in this thread at all! I understand some of you wish him not to flash the card, but certain members are going a tad over the top in their responses!

What happened to the good old days of politely trying to explain to the member why they should or shouldn't flash, and the time when members would help others instead of deserving vacations for what they post to new members?

In before "we are tired of seeing I bricked my card threads!" At least the Op asked before flashing, and if you are not here to help, but rather to condemn those wishing to try something, maybe TPU is not the place for you!

78mhz over 2.2ghz , OK you got me , it's higher what can I say ;)(those are max clocks , I am curios if it stays at that frequency all the time ). And also tell me how much of a difference it makes or if it is worth potentially bricking the card...

I am going to say that it isn't , you might know what you are doing and be fine without actually seeing a tangible advantage , but to everyone else such as OP it isn't a great idea.

No hard mod done, no bios flash....just a waterblock and low ambients. No chance of bricking the card, that's stock voltage and stock power limits.

Yes...if you keep them cold enough, higher clocks scale just fine, and they stay right were you put them when you use the voltage / frequency curve correctly.

I doubt that. I've had 9 pascal GPUs. 8 of them ran at or over 2202 at normal ambients. I didn't test all of them with lower ambient temps, but.....I'm sure the results would have been the same (2252+). The only exception was the TitanXP. It maxed out at about 2189.
