Well I'm going to make this as short as possible.

It seems that the general attitude in the forums lately has shifted from HUMBLE and HELPFUL to SHORT of PATIENCE and borderline RUDE to plain and simply UNHELPFUL.

I dont know exactly how or why this has or is happening but I hope we can pull our heads out our butts and get back on track with what TPU is here for! Even the Forum Rules or Guideline states that the intent of these forums is to be HELPFUL. << I would link to where W1zzard wrote it out but can't find the Dang Guidelines (first cup of coffee still).

Well maybe its a stretch to go from what I stated to

Starting a thread
  • No bumping within 24H, we all help for fun. Don't expect people to help you right away, sometimes it just takes some time.
    • Be polite, if you have nothing nice to say then don't say anything at all. This includes trolling, continuous use of bad language (ie. cussing), flaming and insulting others.
Maybe it is only me that thought this was a website forum created to help other....

Should the mods start cleaning threads more aggressively? Without penalties for the poster

Well maybe that would help in appearance. So short answer is Yes. I think in the long run that will deter from people posting unhelpful post and posts that are not polite.

Not that one....but thank you. I think it was called Guidelines.

Ahh here it is https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/forum-guidelines.197329/

Specifically, this one:

Posting in a thread

  • Be polite, if you have nothing nice to say then don't say anything at all. This includes trolling, continuous use of bad language (ie. cussing), flaming and insulting others.

Far too many forum posts fall into the category of "sucks to be you". If all you're going to do is rub the OP's nose in his/her misfortune, then don't bother posting anything.

I tend to take this approach as it is. Many feel justified though, and then come attacking us for the cleanup. As said earlier, some just feel entitled to be rude and derogatory, and it usually ends up with their removal due to a lack of perspective.

It's just pop culture. I try to help but sometimes get drawn into bitter discussions with professional trolls. I do think mods should be FAR more aggressive though. If the aim is to be helpful and not to tolerate inflated egos, yes, start removing people, not just posts.

Far too many people don't know how to debate a point without being personal. It's understood we will have different opinions on issues or how to help someone, but some need to stop acting so entitled that it's unheard of that they might be wrong.

Then again, as my friend I sometimes disagree with above, @the54thvoid says, maybe it's not rudeness and lack of social skills, maybe there are professional trolls among us.

We have a strict set of guidelines that we have to go by to remove someone. Unless they are blatantly spamming, there are steps that need to be taken first before removal. Ask themailman ;)

Yes Sir I remember themailman's days of of well lets just call them the old "themailman's days" Now I think he is a model forum poster and member of TPU a valued member! People do have the capacity to grow into very valued members like I can remember so many of our notable members (https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/members/) who were unpolished and are now very reputable personalities here!

As PC gaming turns more and more mainstream, so does the attitude and the percentage of people on forums that lack perspective and experience. This is something we all need to realize I think. There is already a system in place to distinguish new members from long serving, active members, but what is missing, is a moderation system for individual posts. It may be a good idea to implement this and it serves many useful purposes. Worth considering IMO. Stuff like 'best answer' or prioritizing posts with high numberbof Thanks, for example.

Introduce carrots before applying sticks.

A lot of people mistake blunt for rude. The 3 millionth time a thread is made about someone killing their rx 4x0 flashing it to an rx 5x0 gets a little old, but so do the same batch of people calling them an idiot for flashing it. This page has some enthusiasts in it and they should understand people want every once of performance out of the rig.

Honestly sometimes the op is the most in need of deletion lol

I blame the UFC, likewise majority of print & electronic media, also most major sports. Too many sadomasochists out there, trying to look cool & being that alpha male & we all know the alpha's always right.

p.s. :lovetpu:

People have a short fuse these days, very easily observable in real life, & I just come here for fun & then some more fun, tech talk is just cherry on top.

Frankly I feel the old sentiment still plays a strong part in common sense that a handful of folks easily forget:

If you've got nothing nice to say then don't say anything at all.

Sounds simple enough but some folks just struggle. As said above, we have rules to follow and steps to take for users that want to push things to the point of infractions and banning.

We've all been witness to the rude treatment of others that are asking for help. I for one am greatly disappointed in those that forgot what TPU is about and would rather degrade and berate a help thread and the OP than actually help.

Thank you to those that keep the TPU flame alive by helping others and staying out of the drama that some try to infest this forum with.

What it takes is showing others it can still be done. Just like it was over 10 years ago when I was a lurker and new member. Deciding between an X800XL and X850PRO from the ATI clearance sale of 2006. Then getting help modding the BIOS of that card, from users here, that turned my PRO into an XT PE. Let alone the endless number of other things I've received help with along my time with TPU. Makes me look forward to being able to help others.

I still see that potential here with many users but I also see some that don't seem to care anymore, some that would rather berate others, thus devaluing their quality help with disrespect, and others that just want to advertise egos and drama.

Hopefully more folks will think about what they're posting and if its worth posting before doing so. Many of us just need to keep doing just that to show others how its done. Be the example!

Couldn't agree more. I never rub someone's misfortune in their face. For example, just today the member ranting about his DOA Seasonic PSU I made a post that should make him feel that little bit happier.

On the other hand, you get idiots coming on here with some problem (especially ones who have bricked their graphics card with a pointless BIOS flash trying to fix a hardware fault) who don't listen to members' advice, which is infuriating. In such cases it's fine to get a bit short with them and tell them straight that they're wasting our time.

On several occasions I've given really good advice on something I know well and put detail in the post just to have it ignored, even with a gentle reminder, which is out of order of them. Yeah, it cuts both ways.

Disagree, the thing is that there is a few Mods that take things too seriously and they enjoy pressing the Ban button, and the most stupid thing is when they send you a private message after they give you 5 warning points, ridiculous.

I think age/maturity/life experience has a lot to do with this, as I have noticed it too over the past year or so (not just here, on many other forums as well). A certain [Millennial] generation seems to have little patience for anything, and can be less than articulate (and vulgar) about explaining their situation. And truthfully it's not just the young folks sometimes.

I have noticed a lot of people being quite rude to posters, and they are obviously allowing their emotions and anger to get the better of them.

Many forums of late seem to get ridiculously long, filled with curse words, and veer way off topic. I invite discussion and debate. We all need to be able to discuss subjects as adults, and if we agree, make our point without personal attacks or name calling. If we disagree, make our argument and leave it at that.

I mean honestly, weren't forums such as this one originally made to help, and give a voice to those less informed. Or to help those people that were at home pulling their hair out because their rig wouldn't POST?

And some people may just have a simple question? A question that may seem like common sense to you or I, but not to someone who doesn't really understand the workings of a computer yet. Sometimes the simplest of answers fixes an issue and makes someone's day.

;)

When you read some other well known sites that rely on a comments section, at least we still have a very, very long way to fall before we hit that level of debased nonsense. What makes TPU stand out is that we notice when we're getting a bit shit and at least we talk about it. It's tech forum therapy. We can still say shit, right?

From what I have seen:
1) Brand 1 vs Brand 2: if you suggest either brand, you have a legit fan boy attack you for being a "fan boy" of the brand they don't like
2) Failed Bios Flash: if a person flashes a bios and cannot recover, you have trolls telling them it was their fault for being an idiot
3) Windows problem: sometimes you get someone who has a software problem, you will get posters attempting to derail the conversation but providing little help to the OP.

:toast:

Thats what brought me on too. I had a Sapphire X800XL I bought from ebay that the prior owner misflashed an X800 GTO bios onto so that it only had half the proper pixel pipelines, IIRC 8 instead of 16. For some reason, it wasn't straight forward flashing the X800XL bios, I think I had to flash a bunch of different bios for various 800 series and brands onto it and then finally the original sapphire X800XL bios was accepted.

And so it's, if you don't know what you're doing why in the hell you try to flash a Bios? first you should go to a Forum and ask for some help about how to flash it and not go to a Forum asking for help after the shit is done.

If this is the case, then why waste your time posting on them ... unless you are a troll?
