why is Adblock extension still alive

Former adblock user here. Switched over to ublock origin when adblock started taking payments from sites to let ads through.

Its funny to see the battle between ads and the usability of the internet. The two just dont get along even in this age of broadband and high investment and commercial interests. Ad companies need to really start de-escalating the content and placement of ads or they may well become obsolete. Its a battle they wont ever win.

In the grand scheme of things, this really doesnt matter. The internet is full of worthless content too, and its not at all harmful to lose that. Relevant sites will always survive because they are relevant and people want them to exist. The internet doesnt exist because it has ads, it exists because it is a powerful medium and it stays that way with or without ads.

You are aware that running a site of any kind cost money, aren't you? Sites exist because someone somewhere pays money. That money could be shitloads of money if the site is big.

I am not defending ads-infested sites, not in the slightest. But I am sick of people yelling "omgz11 uninstalled Adblock because they sold out blabla".


I do agree on large part of the internet being completely worthless though.

There are other ways to generate income and generally a healthy mix of select ads, a subscription with perks, or different forms of membership is much more stable than just relying on ads. And if a site is relevant, people really dont mind paying a small amount to access it. Cherry on top, you also have a much stronger connection between site and its users.

Lets face it, ads are a very lazy way of generating income.

About ABplus, what these guys are doing is putting the axe to their own principles by whitelisting some and excluding others, it is fundamentally wrong because they monetize the very thing they work against. Twisted.

True and if more sites did ads like TPU does ads more people would likely be fine with ads. going to various sites where theres 40 ads while an article is 4 sentences per page = horse shit but thats how things are trending these days. Put another way if site owners were less dickish with ad placements users would likely not resort to blocking ads. Instead both sites just keep trying to out do the other in a race that has no winner.

I am definitely NOT fine with FB ads and noone who has half brains and pair of eyes should be. Not only do they significantly slow the whole (already pathetically coded) site down, they are everywhere. That's one of the best examples how to NOT do it.

If ads were static image banners like they used to be in the 90's, I might allow them on some sites. Those days are long gone, though.

Yeah.... I use the Facebook Mobile Site as the App is Slow/Waste Battery and has less features which there their you just have to search like Notes" Etc.

works fine for me too. many sites now like to remind me that it is working too! They like complaining to me that I am hurting them financially by blocking their ads. Some sites I unblock for this reason if it is a sight I trust and enjoy, but not you tube.

TPU handles Ads differently, you dont see targeted Ads, well I dont.
