So my kid's gaming rig currently has a 2500K at 4.5Ghz but sitting on my desk at home is a brand new 4570 NON K that I have had for quite some time. It is brand new and originally I was going to build a PC with it but that never happened.

Considering it is a locked chip, do you think it's worth buying a mobo and replacing my kids current 2500K?

I'm leaning towards not doing it as the 2500K performs nicely at 4.5Ghz. Having never used the 4570 I do not know what to expect.

Her computer specs:

2500K @ 4.5GHz
8GB DDR3
GTX 1080 FE
850 watt PSU
Windows 10

Unless you need some features that the Core i5-4570 has, I wouldn't bother. The performance numbers don't back up the change, especially when your Core i5-2500K overclocks to 4.5 GHz.

The system specs that you posted don't say anything about storage. If you want to buy something to enhance that system, get an SSD. It'll be money well-spent.

Nope , the only upgrade you should consider is stepping up to an i7.

She has one SSD for OS and all that jazz...

Her full system specs:

Intel Core i5 2500K @ 4.5GHz
Corsair Hydo Series H100i
MSI P67A-GD65 B3
Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 8GB (I was wrong it has 8GB total)
evga GTX 1080 FE
Kingston HyperX 240GB SATA III SSD
Western Digital Velociraptor 10k 300GB
Seagate Barracuda SATAII 7.2k 1TB & 500GB
Corsair TX850
ThermalTake Level 10 GT case
Windows 10

Not a bad rig for an 8 year old. lol

Yeah that is what I was thinking too but I thought getting a second opinion would be good.

Not sure what they heck I will do with this 4570.......I suppose I could upgrade my wife's rig. I have her stuck on a Core 2 duo E8600. I didn't want to buy a board and ram though but that might make the most sense if I can pick up a good deal somewhere.

needs more ram dude, upgrading the platform would bring better sata/usb stuff but i doubt it would be an upgrade in cpu power.

I was just trying to find a use for the 4570 that I have. Her rig runs fantastic. I may toss some more ram in though. I could pull that 8GB out (Its 4x4GB) and use it with the 4570 and buy a mobo for that. Then buy 16GB (2x8 GB) of ram for the kids PC.

I made the upgrade (if you can call it that) from the 2500K to the 4690K and I noticed absolutely no benefit. I'm sure there was less power draw but electricity isn't a concern of mine.

The 2500K was one of the few processors that has stayed relevant long beyond its years, and those of us lucky enough or smart enough to have purchased one should take full advantage of that good decision

It has good cooling already and it has been running at 4.5GHz since the day I bought it on release. Not looking to crank it any further. It currently has a nice Corsair AIO water system and keeps the temps very nice. I have another Corsair AIO water cooler on the shelf never opened. I have too many extra parts.

Thats what I like to hear. I admit it plays any game I throw at it. More so now with the GTX1080 installed. But even before that it had a GTX980.

I think I will toss more ram in it and let it be.

I want to use that 4570 though so i think I will buy a mobo and stick the combo in my wife's rig.

That's basically what I did ,I just set it 47 or 48 ghz, and never looked back never really tried to push it as hard as i could go ,because I depended on it for a day to day performer

Yeah the highest I ever got it at stable was 4.7GHz and I used that for benching purposes only. The profile for 4.7GHz is saved in the BIOS but 4.5 is the sweet spot and I never cared to push it further.

yup, thats just about the same way i ran mine. It always served me wonderfully, it was/is a great CPU, and to my knowledge, has been serving a fellow member here at TPU nicely as a WCG chip. as far as upgrades from that chip, there have been SO many advances in "built on Chip tech" since the SB chips release that there Are incentives for upgrading, but for me, the only justifiable switch was to a 4790. I like having the extra threads , even if i dont need them all the time.
i went with a Xeon 1231V3 and i love it. i also have a 4790 which is also a great chip.

Your daughter's MSI P67A-GD65 (B3) isn't compatible with a Core i5-4570 (Socket 1155 motherboard and Socket 1150 CPU). You would have to replace her motherboard to use the newer processor.

Since your wife's PC is running a Core 2 Duo E8600, it really could stand an upgrade. Drop a few bucks on a decent B85 motherboard and put the 4570 in her machine. That will be a tremendous boost in performance.

As for parts, go eBay hunting. You can find some great deals on slightly older hardware after someone else's upgrade.

Yes I know that. I was going to buy a new mobo LGA 1150. I mentioned earlier in this thread that I would have to buy a new mobo. I then also mentioned that I will most likely buy a mobo, and ram and upgrade my Wife's PC instead. Plus I want to put my GTX 980 in her computer too.

Short answer: Core i5 2500K 4.5 GHz > Core i5 4570 stock.

As seen in this graph, when settings are low, Core i5 2500K is 10 % weaker that both Core i5 3570K and Core i5 4570K; when settings are high (which probably is the case when gaming anyways) Core i5 2500K is on par with Core i5 3570K and Core i5 4570K. The same scenario goes for overclocked matter.

Now, when comparing Core i5 2500K 4.5 GHz to stock Core i5 4570, without a shadow of a doubt, Core i5 2500K OC will dominate the games. Stock Core i5 4570 will bottleneck GTX1080, as well as Core i5 2500K OC, but to lesser extend.

Your kids rig its a complete kick ass one, is better to get some cheap ram and board and stall that 4570 on your wife's rig, value ram and H97 board its all you need,

I was just trying to find a use for the 4570 that I have. Her rig runs fantastic. I may toss some more ram in though. I could pull that 8GB out (Its 4x4GB) and use it with the 4570 and buy a mobo for that. Then buy 16GB (2x8 GB) of ram for the kids PC.
great decision !

you see, no need to get cooler for your wife's new i5 setup =D

@peche Unfortunately my Wife does not rate that water cooler. :D That is my latest one and it will be used on my next build for my rig.

I've actually decided to buy a m-atx LGA 1150 and a new m-ATX cube case and memory and heatsink for the wife's PC. Going to buy everything this morning.

interesting, but well decided, that i5 will boost your wife's computing experience since older Core 2 processors are quite older,

Do any of those XEONs fit a Z68 board?

I have no idea. If I can find them I will post details.

So big change...

I went online to buy a cheap mobo and some ram for that 4570 to upgrade my wife...

And ended up buying a new system for myself. I'll move my old system to my daughters rig and my wife will get my daughters. So everyone is happy except my wallet.

I bought:

i7 7800X
MSI X299 Gaming M7 ACK
Corsair Vengeance LED 32GB DDR4 3466

So I guess that 4570 will not get used after all. Thanks for all the input though but once I was online looking at kit I kept going back to that 7800X and decided it was time.

Yeah I went from under $300 to over $1200. Talk about loss of control.

Yes, Lets,....

I recently bought a pair of 1070s (Gigabyte Gaming G1 cards) from a guy.
575 bucks worth.
Jokingly in a email with him, I said too bad you didn't have any 1080s.
He said, "I do!"
So 800 bucks later, I have a pair of 1080FE cards too.

Yeah, control,.......
