Howdy lads.

I'm considering a Ryzen build and I want to keep the costs as LOW as possible and see how far I can go in terms of specs and performance.

I'm trying to keep the budget to 500 if possible but I'll spend more if there's much reason too.

Firstly I'm considering The AMD Ryzen 3 1200 + GTX 1070 combo or the AMD Ryzen 5 1600 + GTX 1060 combo.
From experience.. I think the first option is the better of the 2 as more GPU power usually means better FPS in most games. I could always buy a Ryzen 5 or 7 in the future once I build up more cash.

I've been out of system building for awhile so I'm not so sure where the best places are right now to buy parts from?!

I'm used to using: http://www.komplett.ie/
Not sure if I should be looking elsewhere?

I did notice that scan.co.uk offers a finance loan type packages which seem very attractive but I don't trust?????? Do you trust in that option? Should I consider that method?

Firstly I will be using a Samsung EVO 840 256 SSD drive in there.. I also have an Antec Gamer PSU that I will also carry over to this rig and I've got the monitor and mouse + keyboard + case already so that leaves only the essentials "GPU-CPU-RAM-MOBO"

I play total war games and RPG + open world games mostly. SO I would imagine a good CPU is required for these genre type.

SO what would yee build?? Try to keep the costs as low as possible and discuss!

The problem right now is both 1060 and 1070 are overpriced due to the mining craze. a 1070 alone is about 400 quid

If you mainly going to play MMORPG's and strategy games, I would strongly advise you to get a 1600, just because they are very CPU intensive. In terms of GPU's you can probably still be fine with your R9 nano, there's no point going for a 1060, it will be a sidegrade.

Yeah I've noticed that these prices are crazy right now.. Not really worth spending so much on those mid-range gpus!

Well I'm building a brand new rig so exclude any specs that you see listed on my system specs. It's just a new rig without any GPU or anything other than what I've listed ^^

But right now I really am considering the r5 1400 or 1600 at the moment as some benchmarks are showing drastic FPS increases with these 2 cpus over the R3 1200!

But prices are seriously making me reconsider even bothering with a Ryzen build right now :O
Maybe I'm better off waiting?

I would've waited, you should still be fine with what you have right now, your choices won't give you any extra performance.

For 500 GBP or 500€? Why going with GTX 1070 or GTX 1060? I recommend RX 470 4GB or RX 570 4GB - depending on which sells for the lower price. They'll rock at 1080p and even at 1440p.

Here is one 520 GBP configuration for you: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/WR3xBP
It will be more than enough for gaming and multimedia. Ryzen 3 1300X is just 20 GBP more expensive than 1200, but I think it's worth it.

Put it this way lads, imagine that I Don't have the rig on my specs sheet! Imagine that I don't have my nano or my main rig nothing other than the list of specs that I listed on the first post. I'm just interested BIG time into going Ryzen right now for my own personal reasons! I guess I just... miss the good old AMD Athlon 2.0Ghz days when I was a young teen! That CPU made gaming so good so I just love that AMD have a decent setup once more and I just want an AMD system this time ^^

@Komshija : That's actually a pretty good setup, one of which I will seriously consider. I'm from Ireland so we have Euro here and not pounds so that will have to be considered also. Perhaps starting off with 8gb RAM will help bring the costs down a bit to my budget.

It’s your cash, but you’re pretty much investing in a carbon copy of the PC you already have.

If I were you, I would sell off my current hardware, with that money + your 500 EUR, build a nice gaming rig from that!!

In that case I would go for something like this:

Sorry, but I wouldn't recommend anyone buying a ~3GB VRAM graphics card these days, I would recommend 4GB~+ VRAM cards.

For 1080p should be enough. 570 4GB and 1060 3GB are almost identical in performance but normally the 1060 overclocks further. The problem is 1060 6GB and 580 8GB are too expensive. If he doesn't mind waiting he could go for something like this:

http://www.morecomputers.com/p/?pid=GV-RX580GAMING-4GD>>Gigabyte&referer=PCPart

Or a 2nd hand GPU if he can find a good deal

@Irish_PXzyan: In such case 8 GB DDR4 - either 2400, 2666 or 3000 MHz, but make sure that you buy brand and model that will be easier (and cheaper) to match in the future. With 8 GB you'll be right in the 500-520 € range.

is that Ram on the QVL list? if it is, it means you can push it to close to 3k mhz and overclock the cpu a bit more.

Pull your pants up

Ryzen 3 & 5 are not a good option. They will not show much improvement in gaming or in editing over the i3 or i5.
I also wanted so badly to go up this route. Trust me i dont have a big money. I'm sort a forced to go for Ryzen 7. For the money difference of almost 70-80$ i wont miss out on 2 more cores.
If you have to go as low as you can go Ryzen 1600x. In one year,if gaming companies improve it should prove worth. Right now the i5 kaby lake still rocks.

If I was building a new rig today, I'd go with an R7 1700, and a very cheap GPU, like the 1050Ti. The reason being that GPU prices are super inflated right now due to the cryptocurrancy mining craze.

So put the money where it will get you the most part for you money right now, and higher GPUs right now are not a good value for the money. So get a cheap GPU just to get you though(honestly the 1050Ti is still a decent 1080p performer), and once the prices on the higher GPUs start to come back down to reasonable levels, grab an upgrade GPU.

I've listened to all of your advice and responses and now I even have decided to hold off bothering with the Ryzen build for the time being at least. Plus the GPU prices are funny enough for me to lose any interest!

How ever me and my brother have decided to build a " fun " computer of sorts instead just to play around with and see how far we can push it!

What I mean by that is to go down the OLD Xeon X5650 route instead and as they're so cheap and overclock rather well.
It's just for fun! I will also get a used R9 290 for 175 so that price is decent considering what else is out there for new.....

What do yee guys think of that? Is it a stupid idea or maybe it could be worth doing as an experiment for fun?!?!
I mean the CPU can be had for around 40 euro on ebay along with a cooler for another 40! Obviously the motherboard and RAM might be hard to come by but then again I have yee guys to help me out with this? If anyone is interested in helping me out with this build of course :p

What are your thoughts?

I meant that considering the prices of the GTX 1060s for myself would cost at least 300+ euro.. the R9 290x at 175 is a good performer considering the price ^^

Actually my comment was to Cvrk but yeah, that R9 290x is still a good card performance-wise and not bad for 175 Euros.

I've seen a bottleneck review on R3 1200 and 1300x recently, and in most games if you go w/ R3, the CPU will bottleneck that GTX1070.
Also, at current prices 500eu won't get you too far, barely enough to make a decent R3 build.
For example:
- R3 1200
- The cheapest X370 board (AsRock x370 Killer, or ASUS Prime)
- GTX1060 6GB of your preference
- 2x8GB DDR4-2800 kit
... all adds up to almost 600 euro. And if you give that chip a slight OC to 4GHz, then you'll probably want to invest into a decent heatsink (will also come in handy when you upgrade to R5 or R7).

The thing is, in today's world a used R9 290X at 175 euro may end up being a ticking time bomb. You should only buy it, if you personally know the seller, because there are lots of 200 and 300-series cards that had been ran to the ground with mining. I'd rather spend that cash on a less exciting GTX1050Ti, but with warranty, unstressed and fully operational cooling, colder GPU, and much higher certainty that it won't fail and/or burn my house down. It's probably safer and better to get a used GTX970. Might be even cheaper and in some cases faster than 290x (khm... pretty much everything but DX12 games).
