Naming schemes are pretty interesting nowadays, with AMD firing some warning shots across Intel's bow with their X399 HEDT chipset (thus superseding Intel's X299 by a whole hundred.) This may seem like nothing, and it actually should be nothing; naming schemes are not to be considered indicative of actual performance, especially in regards to competing companies' products. However, as we all know, there is power in numbers. Namely, there is power in bigger numbers, as an i7 will be above an i5, and a Ryzen 7 will be above a Ryzen 3.

AMD threw a curve ball towards Intel with their B350 chipset, which stands in the way of Intel's own historical nomenclature (after the B150 and B250 chipsets from Intel, a B350 would surely follow.) Now, reports say Intel will be upping AMD by releasing a B360 chipset, thus regaining footing in the "bigger is better" battle of wits over consumer's hearts. My Drivers, the source of the information, goes on to say that these chipsets won't be released in 2017 (only Intel's Z370 chipset is expected this year), and that despite using the same socket, Intel's Coffee Lake won't be a drop-in upgrade for Z170 and Z270 platforms, since Intel "changed the alignment of the design." This information had already been advanced by a motherboard maker's social media channel as well.

It would be nice if these idiot companies (Yes, both intel & amd) would stop playing the numbers/naming scheme games and just concentrate on making high-quality, reliable and affordable products... they would be a lot better off.

gee, what a concept :D

Should have named them ryzen 8, 6, 4... then it would at least line up with the number of cores.

while at the same time preserving the "but this amp goes up to 11" vibe.

Easiest and funniest way to get under each other's skin.
AMD Ryzen 3, 5, 7 copying Intel's i3 i5 and i7.
Ryzen really should have been named 4, 6, and 8 with the number corresponding to number of cores. Sure they might have had a ton of Ryzen 4 models but at least the naming would be logical. And they would have 1-upped Intel.
EDIT: welp looks like my thoughts came a few minutes late.

It's really a dick thing for AMD to have done. Out of all the numbers and letter they had to do X399, B350, R3, R5, R7, etc, etc.

This just confuses the market for no reason. They could have done, R8, R6, R4 for Ryzen. Still bigger numbers, it matches the core counts, easy to remember for people.

how true.
I wont buy from companies that make moves like this, it expresses their lack of professionalism.

AMD marketing <> AMD engineering.

AMD marketing has always been notoriously bad. AMD engineering, given the resources they have, has been unbelievable.

You mean from both?
Intel has been using this progressive naming/numbering scheme for years, AMD deliberately hijacked it, a pathetic attempt to steal some thunder from Intel. AMD is like a kid on a playground...Intel should just name their chipset B350, and let the chips fly. Intel builders won't be confused and buy the wrong motherboard, that's something only an AMD fanboy would do, since they seem to love ignoring the truth and making up "facts". Intel should never change their plans because of AMD's childishness, just keep smacking them around as usual.

The problem is not the builder itself(on either side), it's the retail shop trainee who has to pick right one i.e. MSI B350 mortar gaming 5 for amd or MSI B350 mortar gaming 6 for intel. Not that some confusing might come with this b350 vs b360 too.

This. AMD has decent products now that are a good value. There was no need to complicate or confuse the market by using such a similar naming scheme for all the CPU and chipset products. The products were good enough to stand on their own.

Wait, so then you won't buy from Intel, Nvidia, or AMD? Because Intel just did this and AMD and Nvidia have done so as well.

I still cringe to this day whenever I recall buying a Geforce whose model name ended with "XT," thinking it was the cream of the crop. That was only true for ATi videocards... (Plus, it was a Geforce FX. Ugh, I wish I could travel back in time and kick myself in the butt.)

I fail to see how this confuses the market. Intel has established a concrete, recognized convention of product names and AMD knows it. People know that it's '7, 5, 3' and they played the smart move of adopting the same convention.

Yeah it's pretty dam sad, although all pretty harmless, unlike what Intel have done to AMD over the years.
