I have a Asus laptop and it has win 8. I want to install win 10, then burn win 10 to usb drive. In the install screen, I format the harddrive where win 8 was then hit install and realize the disk is in GPT mode so window can't be install. what to do now? I can't get back to win 8 to change the disk to MBR. This laptop has no optical drive also.

Are you getting a warning when trying to load the OS?

As far as I can tell, you may want to either go into bios and change from UEFI to Legacy, or maybe someone can burn a USB stick with drive tools on it so you can format the drive via third party tools.

you should have a Format option, this will wipe it, and ready it for install. if thats not working, maybe diskpart tool? or what pete says...that likely a resolution too.

you're not trying to install the 32bit version are you? x86?

Had a similar error when putting my Ryzen system together, this is what worked for me:

Method #1:
1. Boot up to installation DVD/CD.
2. Click install but don't follow through.
3. Press SHIFT-F10 to bring up console.
4. Type "diskpart"
5. Once inside diskpart type, exactly (without ""):
"list disk" (find the one you want to convert)
"select disk 0" (select the one you want from the list)
"convert mbr" (should take a second or two)
"quit"
6. Continue with install

Method #2:
1. Boot up to installation DVD/CD.
2. Click install but don't follow through.
3. Press SHIFT-F10 to bring up console.
4. Type "diskpart"
5. Once inside diskpart type:
-> "list disk" (find the one you want to convert)
-> "select disk 0" (select the one you want from the list)
-> "clean" (wait until it's done)
-> "quit"
6. Continue with install

did this method. However, after hit convert mbr. this message pop up. this drive can't be convertible.
I tried to fomat the USB loaded with win 10 in GPT mode, but the laptop can't boot it somehow.
ok, now it boot the USB with gpt mode, but when I choose install win to drive 0. The message appears " We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one."

Maybe I'm missing something here.... What is your BIOS set to? Legacy Mode?

GPT is used for UEFI BIOS - meaning NON-legacy - you cannot use MBR in this mode.
MBR is used for NON-UEFI BIOS (I.E. LEGACY MODE) Which means you cannot use GPT.

I'm going to ASSUME that if the drive was formatted to GPT then you have Legacy mode disabled..

I think you need to check your settings - recommendation - Turn off Legacy in BIOS- Use Microsofts Media Creator for Windows 10 ISO for that USB stick and try again.

Why do you want to convert to MBR? instead of keeping GPT?

coz I can't install window. there's is a message it can't find an existing partition. Have no idea why.
HAVE NO IDEA WHY IT WORKS NOW, BUT I THINK I JUST DELETED ALL PARTITION EXCEPT THE 1 I WANT TO INSTALL WIN ON.
