Don't use chrome my self but if i did i would probably turn it off as it does lower power usage ( GPU ) by doing so. I use Seamonkey which is like Firefox with both being from Mozilla and use the about:config to make the changes, maybe chrome has some thing like this ? \ unless it's in the advanced options.

How much power does it save?

After an initial bump, my card (1080) goes to 2D clocks, one above idle clocks, and sits around 6% use according to GPUz...

Unfortunately NO, it won't make Chrome any faster, you could have 100s of tabs open though!

EDIT: Clearly more CPU use is to be found on lesser CPUs with fewer cores and slower IPC than mine. I wonder what a 7700K would do compared to the older and woefully slower FX stuff...

I'd say it's pretty bad regardless of what CPU you use. No reason not to use HW acceleration , unless of course you encounter issues.

Chrome seems bugged , when not using HW acceleration it appears to be using a much slower decoder. Because otherwise 4K videos play just fine locally using the CPU.

Something to do with VP9 , which is the encoder Google uses for their videos.

Id like to hear from others too. It happens on canary.. whatever the hell that is. But again, working fine on skylake-x without excessive cpu use in the least.

No issues here.

Use hardware deconding was never a question. Just sharing my results since i watch a lot of 4k content...
