Hi team

The rig is almost complete but I've now I've got a issue connecting my monitors.

I have 3x Samsung U28D590D and 2x 1080 ti poseidons.

I'm wanting to surround the lot so I can game on all three but the monitors are the older type that only receive 30hz through hdmi and 60hz through display port. My issue is the 1080ti only have two display ports on a card.

How on earth do I connect them up?

Thanks a million!!

I knew that Nvidia surround only works properly if you use the outputs from just 1 card. Not sure if that's the case anymore.

Maybe get an adapter to use the HDMI port on the card ?

Thank you for that. Yeah it crashes when ever I try surround with the monitor plug into the gpu#2. But run fine just as all displays seperatly.

Are you meaning an adapter like this?
https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/CAB8WR0101/8Ware-RC-DPHDMI-2-2m-DisplayPort-to-HDMI-Cable-28

Or does it need to be like an active type adapter? Sorry for being a bit novice on this.

I think a cable is enough since these cards have built in converters as far as I know. Although I am not entirely sure maybe someone else knows more about this.

I had 2-way GTX 680 in SLI driving surround, and I have 2 monitors driven by the first card and 1 monitor by the second card. Take a look at the link below for the setup guide. I don't think the guide has changed for the 1080 series. There is nothing that requires all displayed to be driven by the first card. That is a requirement for AMD Eyefinity setup. As for cable, you will need to have an "active" adapter cable for surround to work.

Everytime i do this the computer crashes. LAst time i tried just then after i had to hard reset i got left at the Overclock failed bios notice. I can still get the three monitors working in 4k individually just not together in surround

Yes but before you do that, I think your crashes are related to something else. Have you tried another Displayport off the 2nd card? Did you swap GPU or run benchmark to see if the 2nd card is defective? Connecting a monitor to the 2nd GPU should not crash the system.

Yeah, try a few things first. A good active HDMI to DP cable runs about $50 I think but if you are okay with trying a few things first it might be worth it. More hassle of course, but just to rule out you don't have any hardware issue.

As far as I know, nVidia control panel does not let you enable surround if your system (cards) are not connected properly. So it is surprising that if you have an unsupported configuration it lets you do that.

I have been running surround with 3x Titan and 3x 680 and the 2x 1080. No issue ever except the first time I tried it there are only few people do it, Not much info back then, and still not much info now. Let me know how it goes.

Edit: Use this link below to see your configuration. Using GTX 1080 as a reference, looks like you must connect one of the cables to the 2nd GPU.

So the Set up multiple displays page states and i quote: "When SLI is enabled, only one GPU in the SLI group can drive displays. To use two displays, connect them to the same GPU"

So i feel an good active adapter is the way to go for 4k 60hz

Update: After talking to Nvidia Live assist they state with the generation of my card, it shouldn't matter if i connect my monitors to both cards.

Now I wanna know what games op is attempting to run on triple 4k when a single 1080Ti barely does 4k and SLI sucks.

System use to run game like Assassins creed black flag and Wolfenstien the new order at around 60fps when i had my 2 780ti. I say 'around' as in intense scenes yes it would drop but nothing unplayable. ill find the figures once i have her up and running and will post soehwere if you want

I'd like to see the numbers because it's something I've had interest in. I ran Black Flag on my two 780s but that was on 5760x1080.

If i recall correctly it could run ultra as playable so long as NOTHING and i mean NOTHING was happening execpt me moving. I think it was the level down but it was over a year ago since ive had this computer up and running again so i cannot really remember. ALthough if its not around 60hz even in taxing areas i get a little stroppy so i wont be playing anything less than 40/45fps spikes

Update:

Talking with Nvidia everything ive done so far with connections etc and what im trying to do should work.

I am now running 11520x2160. What did i do, thats a good question if someone knows it would be good!. I had changed the Display ports around on my pc re plugged in all leads on my monitors and tried to set up surround a few times. On the fourth try it succeeded after approx 4 minutes of screen flashing and fuzy broken pictures.

Will keep this posted on what i find.

Not out of the woods yet: I tried running up one of the games I had installed (Diablo 3). Starting was glitchy then loaded onto the centre screen. When in settings found I couldn't set to wide screen? Possibly game didn't support it. Yet to confirm. But when I went to reset the pc it started again only displaying the two side screens and not the primary.

The primary monitor is connected to the standalone plug on gpu 2. I have a feeling there is still communication issues between cards. May it be only at this resolution? Not sure as nvidia surround doesn't let me change the resolution from native.

only receive 30hz through hdmi
Your display (that Samsung,) only has HDMI 1.4 which can't drive 4k@60Hz, you need at least HDMI 2.0 for that. I also think that SLI requires having all of your displays plugged into the same GPU but, I could be remembering incorrectly (that's how my AMD cards worked in CFX when using Eyefinity/Surround.)

Yes, that is why I am running display port 1.2 which can run it. As per the first post . Which is also why I wanted to convert from hdmi to DP to trick my monitors. But at the moment with surround it should be working as I did witness for 20 amazing minutes . Probably just a silly setting that's been missed by me somewhere but we will get there after work :)

So in Windows you can set which display is the main display. From what I am reading you set the main display connected to the 2nd GPU? For your SLI bridge, what are you using? nVidia high bandwidth bridge? Or plain regular SLI cable?

I have been selecting it as any but once in surround I believe it makes no difference. I'm using one of the new High bandwidth Sli bridges @LFaWolf

I think you are pretty much doing what needs to be done, except I would set the main display to one that is connected to GPU1. Keep trying different config I say, because I don't know if the active display adapter will actually solve your problem. It may, but it could be a different problem entirely.

Yeah, nvidia tec did say I was doing it correctly. When connecting to surround tho it's classified as one monitor so there isn't the main display. Otherwise it can be set to any and by default that's where applications pop up (my understanding). And has been working fine on any card. I with you on the adapter so I've asked local mates to see if I could borrow one but turns out they're not common
