Not much risk in this. AMD has done it many times to not do it again (AM2 with Phenom1&2, AM3 with Phenom2, Thuban and FX81X0 and FX83X0 and FM2 with Ax-5XX0, 6XX0 and 7XX0), opposite to Intel who use to change chipset every 1-2 years. So, Ryzen platform is easily the most possible for anyone to keep his motherboard and RAM for 3 CPU series.

My current processor runs smooth as butter on Ubuntu 16.04, no need to upgrade.

Intel could've said the same thing when they first launched socket 1151 with skylake and that it would support up to kaby lake because technically they aren't lying, just one needed a new mobo because a new chipset was required every single time.

No offense but the cpu you are using is 5 years old. Either choice wouldn't matter if you do that long with a cpu. Like normal people. So does it really matter if AMD supports AM4 till 2020? Thats only 3 years.

Besides, thats only socket support, they might bring out new chipsets just like Intel does.
