How often should we upgrade

I had an old AthlonXP system I used from 2002 all the way to 2007, it became so slow that I had to build a complete new system. This X38 based system served two CPUs and 3 GPUs. It simply refuse to die or slow down after 8 yrs of service so I sold it. Afterwards build my current system on the X99, unfortunately my current setup committed suicide after a brief 2yrs of service.

With that said I upgrade(or more like build a whole new system) every 6 or 7 years. I do upgrade the CPU and GPU mid cycle though.

every year. buy and re/sell. keep it interesting if you can. there is no fun sitting on the same system.

How often you shut upgrade, depends on the users needs and what the user are doing on there PC + what do you do to keep the system going like getting more ram, newer OS, SSD and things like that. Also many people prolong life span by overclock there CPU and other hardware when it gets to slow.

If just browsing the internet/youtube, some word and that stuff. A pc can last a very long time before it becomes to slow.

For gamers it also depends on needs and how many FPS you want. Some games benefits from a powerful CPU core with high IPS like CS:GO since it is not well optimized for multi core cpu. Other games that are well optmized for multi core CPU´s tend to run well on even some of the Oldes I5/I7 CPU's.

Pro workstation/converting users are properly those who upgrades CPU with the shortes time between. They want as must cpu power they can get and for those who earn money by working on a pc, time is litterly money. So the faster cpu, the more money they can make.

With that said. CPU speed increase has also been rather slow the last many years. Its first here in 2017 since like 2009/2010 that cpu again has gone throw a new level of speed increase ment. That also holds users back for a needed for upgrade.

My self i upgrade that component i feel lagging after the rest of my pc. Mostly that is GPU. While i been on X58/LGA 1366 since 2009 and the same CPU until januar 2017 where i upgradet from a I7 920 to a I7 980X. Else it has been hardware around it i have upgrade. more SSD, more ram, better GPU and so on while CPU upgrade really hold outs the longest time for me.

So while the rest of my PC has rather new stuff in it with severel sata SSD´s including a M.2 SSD (a second M.2 SSD is on its way), latest GPU generation, windows 10 and so on. CPU/motherboard is still good old X58 . CPU for me is properly the last thing i upgrade before every thing else has been replaced one or more times. besides PSU and one harddrive CPU/mobo is the Oldes hardware in my pc.

My system as it is right now. cable management is not the pretties, but case is not great for cable management. Maybe i shut get a new case in a near future.

All I prob will do is maybe buy the next ti gpu and swap out my fans for the Corsair rgb fans and maybe a bigger HDD and faster memory. But I’m definitely skipping this generation intel CPU’s I am happy with what I got. Rgb will bring out the boring blue led fans. I got 4 games on my HDD now and there all 60-100gb so I’m afraid if I keep buying more games I run out of space, but i also do console games so I won’t have so many games on my HDD till I get something bigger

Computer parts are not an investment and depreciate rapidly, its a good idea to wait about 4 years and not spend more than 2 weeks salary

Like the title says how often should we upgrade I have the 7th generation intel cpu and ddr4 memory I was basically waiting for the ddr5 memory people say that’s been slated for 2020 release dates. Which I think is probably the right time for me to upgrade, they usually stop supporting mobo and cpu and bios updates when the new hardware comes out. But as of now I’m stil receiving updates for everything. And do we really need turbo boost from intel unless you get the really high end and fasted cpu anyways. I’ve upgraded in March of this year and my gpu in July. I think I’m good to go till 2020.

CPU wise, there's very little reason to upgrade. I also have a 7th gen (7700k). It's more than enough for the forseeable future.

I think the only compelling reason to move on from them is dissing Intel entirely and buying Ryzen. But that isn't exactly for upgrade reasons.

I had an i5 2500K system until around November of last year. At 4.5GHz I didn't really NEED to upgrade (recently had swapped my GTX 780 to a GTX 1080), but I felt that it was time to do so.

So I did.

Of course, if I could have waited until CFL/Zen+ release, I should have, but hindsight and all that.

CPU+Ram+motherboard 5-7 years
GPU 2-5 years
Hard drive,until it breaks
PSU maybe replace after warranty duration?
Monitor,until it breaks or you're after higher needs like higher resolution etc
Peripherals,until it breaks
Case, forever until it starts falling into pieces

You should upgrade as often as you need to depending on what your needs are, so long as your capable of doing it without going broke or over-extending yourself financially. In other words, upgrade when you need it, think it's worth the money, and are capable of spending said money.

There are lots of ways to participate in something, just for the fun of it, without buying stuff and still be a true enthusiast.

generally speaking the only way a true enthusiast wont spend a penny is when he dosnt have a penny to spend.. there have been times in my life where i have been in exactly that position..

of course it does depend on how one defines an enthusiast.. maybe my definition differs from yours..

Clearly it does. Your definition seems be very narrowly focused implying only a full participant can be a true enthusiast. I completely disagree. Someone can be a spectator or just extremely interested and be a true enthusiast. Enthusiasm is all about the level of interest, not participation.

You don't need Pro. Pro offers nothing over Home for just pure gaming. Pro also hogs more resources. But I would still recommend getting pro if you use computer for other tasks. The encryption on pro with bitslocker is pretty good.
