Upgrade to i5 6600K or i7 6700K [Solved]

I plan to upgrade my i5 6500 to an i5 6600K soon.
I mainly play slightly modded GTA V @ 1440p G-Sync, I have noticed my GPU wants to deliver more fps than my current CPU can handle so thats why. (of course I could use MSAA but I like to test higher fps gaming)
A i7 6700K has also come to my mind at first but I have seen tests on the internet that a i5 6600K can deliver the same fps and I can save a bit money to buy an i5 6600K instead and the i7 runs much hotter.

Question to the people that own an i5 6600K:

What cooling do you have and what are your max core temps while gaming?
OC'd?

as you already know for mine:
4.4 all core H115i balanced mode and 60°C in games.

at 4.0 you can probably keep the Hyper 212 Evo (specially if in push pull configuration)

Yeah I'd like to keep it. 4 GHz on all 4 cores should be fine at first.

I'm not buying it for benchmarking, it's mainly for GTA V (and of course my other games).

actually a real day to day usage comparison would be better, or in game comparison .... benchmarks are a bit ... meh, lately

tho yep between the 6500 and 6600K the differences would be "nil" but P4-630 would still gain OC'ability and potential, it's a bit better than a 3.3

I'd still advise you to get the i7.

It's just that it runs much hotter than an i5 6600K (air cooled), even at stock speeds, at least in the reviews that I have seen.

Hmmm.. Ok could be better for upcoming games, you have a point there.
But it also costs 100+ Euro more... I will read some more and compare CPU's, temps and game fps again...

@ASOT what's your experience with that i5 6600K?
What GPU do you have it currently paired with?

Its a total sidegrade don't even bother with either i5 or i7, I doubt you will notice a difference in GTA V.

i5: I doubt the clockspeed will give you more than a few FPS, so the cost isn't worth it.
i7: in the future, when the extra 4 threads make a difference, buy an 8 core at that point in time.

I'm not looking to invest in a new motherboard with another (probably more expensive) CPU that goes with it. (it's not that I don't want that, it's just money that I don't have for such an upgrade)

Sounds like you want the K so buy it, but I doubt the clockspeed boost will really matter as far as GTA V goes. Would a 950 evo SSD make a bigger difference instead? GTA V has long loads.

Good one! It seems I did bookmark this page a while ago.
But an i5 6600K should be at least an overall 15% improvement @ stock or even higher when you set all cores at 4GHz or when OCing it.
I play at 1440p BTW.

I think if you can OC your CPU with your board, you should try it since you have a Z170 board. Base clock is a bit trickier than multiplier overclock.

Edit: this is interesting read, apparently non k overclock via baseclock hurts avx2 performance

I have been reading about it but the thing is, it would run at a constant high speed and the temp sensors don't seem to work anymore....
You just need to know your CPU temps when OCing.

The i5 6600K upgrade would cost me about 100 Euros in the end if I sell my current CPU.
I would be able to save up some more for a i7 6700K but I'm not really happy with the load temps I read about on the net of this CPU compared to an i5 6600K.

I'd probably need a new cooler as well if I would buy an i7....

With these games it's not worth the extra 100 Euros for the i7.

OK....I know GTA V will use all 8 threads from an i7, what if I would underclock it a few 100s MHz?

I just need a (affordable)solution to game at some higher fps @ 1440p, my current CPU runs at 99% load if I do not lock the fps and it gives me a stutter now and then eventhough I have a G-Sync monitor.
With a CPU upgrade I would like to keep the CPU load under 90% and with that giving me higher fps.

Just because it uses it doesn't mean it produces better performance relative to the cost. Have you tried overclocking your ram?

Edit: also try reducing settings. I know thats not as sexy an answer as spending more money but I run GTAV at 2560x1440 @ 60fps on my old rig by lowering settings, I am not a big stickler for graphical fidelity though.

Edit2: I also think that if you plan to use the rig long term you might as well buy the i7, otherwise just keep what you have because the i5-K will not give you much more than what you have now.

My ram runs at 3000MHz XMP, I think it's good enough. No?

I run slightly modded GTA V @ 1440p with sunny weather at a locked 65fps, locked 75fps with rainy weather, I lock the fps to avoid letting the CPU run at 99% since it causes a stutter now and then...
(I have adjusted the settings in GTA V for better fps)

Look at quad to quad with HT, not quad with ht to octo...

2500k to 3770k is almost 10 fps. There is also a an IPC and 200 mhz speed difference there... but...reality is, it isnt much.

The jump to a k only is silly to me, honestly. If you are going to upgrade, make it worthwhile... a k isnt worthwhile to me. Sidegrade.

Have you cancelled out the 7600k or 7700k?

They will overclock better and have slightly more IPC.

They do run a bit warmer tho...
