Full SSD, gonna add another in RAID 0, best way to migrate data?

hey there,

I currently have a 120gb SSD that has filled up. i run my system off that and keep my games and things on my hdd,

I want to get a second 120gb SSD and put them in RAID 0 cause i wanna go fast

My question is, with just 1 computer, how can I go about migrating the data from my SSD to the new RAID?

I think im going to use easeus to clone my SSD onto my old laptop hard drive, set the raid up and boot from that old laptop hard drive to use easeus again to migrate the data to the raid.

the problem is that would erase all my data from my laptop hard drive and that would be rip windows install and its an oem one so id have to buy a new windows key if i wanted to use that laptop for anything much...

does anyone know any better ways or software (preferably free) that would let me clone a disk onto a partition of my hard drive or something or is there really no better way?

You might be able to use the intel rapid storage technology application to create an array by adding the new disk.

thats making a software raid through disk management yeah? i didnt think you could boot from them ill have a look into it

Its hardware raid thats bootable if you use the intel controller.

Go into the bios and switch the controller to raid and see if windows still boots. If it does than you can use the intel app to create an array and it will migrate the data between the disks.

I just did this afew weeks ago on a x79 platform. Its super easy setup and add disks.

Are you using one of the blue sata ports? Or a gray port?

Just a note, in my experience doing this on older Intel chipsets actually makes things feel slower because of the increased latency caused by the RAID. SSDs feel fast because of their super low latency compared to HDDs, not because of their raw throughput. So increasing the latency makes them feel slower when used as an OS drive.

IMO, it would be better to just buy a bigger SSD. They've gotten so cheap, it is kind of a no brainer. I mean, the cost difference between a 120GB SSD and a 240GB SSD is like $25...

Also, you can't just add the drives to a RAID0 array. All data on the drives will be lost when they are added to the array. You need to backup your current drive somehow, create the array, and then restore the backup. And if you are switching between AHCI and RAID SATA modes, then you have to make some registry changes before you do the backup, otherwise Windows won't boot once you restore.

Don't raid two 120 SSD. If you must make an image but you won't have trim. I would just get a bigger ssd

Why wouldnt there be TRIM with an image??

OP- dont R0 unlezs you can actually use the throughput. Otherwose boot times are similar or longer due to RAID loading and you lime wont get much out it.

I think he is saying there won't be TRIM because of the RAID. That used to be an issue, but Intel fixed it years ago with updated IRST drivers.

Raid 0 ain't worth the risk imo. When one fails, tl;dr: you're fucked. Especially with ssds.

Hardware and software. It started with the 7000 chipset. Still a larger SSD would be better than two in raid 0

. But, i know it works in x58. Trim works with single drive and a bit later in raid in x58. As newtekie said, for a while it didnt support trim in raid, but that was also resolved several years ago.

Yes. Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) version 11.0 or greater supports TRIM functionality in RAID 0, beginning with the Intel® 7 Series Chipset.

EDIT: I found it. I guess it does work now with x58.

i cant afford a bigger ssd so ill do some testing for latancy and speeds and things with and without raid and decide which i feel is better.

im using the grey ones on my motherboard as the manual said they are the sata 6gbps ports.
