If 2015 was all about OLED, and 2016-17 about quantum-dot (QLED), Samsung will herald the MicroLED display panel era in 2018, with its first implementation, a massive 150-inch television, which will be showcased at the 2018 International CES. A MicroLED panel uses solid-state LED elements etched onto a silicon-substrate, that are less than 100 µm in size, each, which act as individual pixels. If you're familiar with microscopic transistors that make up modern semiconductor chips, imagine if LEDs were built on that scale. That's MicroLED.

With further development, MicroLED panels will achieve higher pixel densities, and won't suffer form "burn-in" problems that OLED (organic LED) panels suffer from displaying the same image over extended periods of time. It also offers significantly lower power-draw compared to OLED. The 150-inch MicroLED TV prototype Samsung is showing off at CES will come with 4K Ultra HD resolution. Samsung's next implementation of the MicroLED tech could be smartphone display panels. The company's main rival in this area, Apple, is already working with TSMC to develop MicroLED panels of its own.

QLED failed, on to the next misleading OLED stand-in

This isn't misleading or an OLED stand-in. It's a better technology than OLED which has resulted in Apple investing money in the technology.

QLED might have been misleading to the average consumer but so was LED. It's still an improvement for LCD displays though.

Is this any different then what Sony demoed under "Crystal LED Display" for the first time back in 2012?

still can't afford OLED...
4K 50" LED SMART TV? 200-500$ (including holiday deal prices)
4K 50" OLED SMART TV? 1200-2500$ (including holiday deal prices)

maybe its less about being able to afford it and more about not wanting to shell out 5-6x as much for it...

Same, its just a bit too early for OLED still. Give it a couple years, and you'll get solid 4K support in content as well as in good quality panels.

150 inch 4k isnt particularly impressive to show ppi. What about a 12k one, samsung

OLED is going to end up like plasma if they don't stop milking it and offer affordable options sometime soon.

And sometime in 2028 we'll see the first 48" PC monitor with it..

I'd go as far and say OLED was never intended for proper use in a HDTV. The burn in disadvantage and high price that comes from complex manufacturing of big displays are big problems that prevented OLED from taking over the market and gaining any significant spread. MicroLED will probably change this, the technology sounds more promising at least.
