My i5 3570k rig went from oct 2013 > jan 2018, and to be fair, I reckon it could have easily kept going for another 2-3 years before becoming too slow for its purpose.
See I squeezed every day I possably could out of the Intel build I really wanted to see how long it would "last" 9 Years! Jesus!

I've been using the same case, motherboard, ram, PSU, and storage for the last 6 years. I've since upgraded the GPU, CPU, and displays. All in all, I don't think I'll be switching platforms any time soon. Certainly not with current GPU and DRAM prices.

Definetly one of the badest looking motherboards ever

With the i7 920 i had a asus rampage 2 extreme. Swapped motherboard out to get sata 3 and usb 3.0 cause only second gen x58 boards have these two features.

I'm always replacing my PC gear. I usually buy used parts from some wealthy friends for steep discounts.
They buy all of the latest, greatest, and I get their leftovers!

I have several systems, with four of them running at any given time.
The ones that are running are my wife's Xeon Quad Core Office PC, My i9-7900X 10 Core, My i7-7700K Quad Core, and my i7-6700K Quad Core. All three of my systems are running two GPUs each, in SLI.
One has two 1080s, one has two 1070s, and one has two 980Ti in it.

On the shelf, I have a Linux box that is an old Dell Core-2 Duo and it's in semi-storage for now. It's old, but it runs Linux well and I like to use it every now and then.

I also have a Ryzen 1700X Eight Core box that I'm putting back into service sometime this week. Once it's ready, it will replace the i7-6700K box.

I have a second i7-7700K box built and ready to go that the guy next door is saving to buy. That will fund the purchase of a second 1080Ti card to go with the one that I just bought for $530.00.

The reason that I keep all of these PCs running is for my kids and grandkids to play with when they visit. My wife and I live alone, but when we get visitors, we have LAN parties.

I built a Q9650 on an ASUS P5Qpro MB back in 2008 and just 4 days ago built a new computer seeing that my old one was about to die the HDD was going out it was slow took almost a full 4 min to boot up! But all in all I got 9 years of service out of the system and could get even more as it still works just like I said slower than snail shit.
SO to sum it up I got 9 full years of service from my last build.

My old Q9650@3.6GHz under a Xig S1283 + CM120 fan, P5Q Deluxe @ 400FSB, 8GB (4x2GB) G.Skill DDR2 1066, PC Power & Cooling 700W PSU (non-modular & 80mm fans), AMD HD5870 1GB OEM, 1TB WD Black HDD all in a CoolerMaster HAF932. I sold it to a co-worker in 2011 after using it for a couple of years and wanting to move onto the next. Was a damn good setup, super stable. I ran it at 4GHz when I had it and never had an issue.

My co-worker sold it to his brother in law around 2013. I've given it a yearly once-over every year since. Last time I saw it, was still running decently well for an old Core2 DDR2 rig. It's nicknamed the file cabinet and it has become kind of a relic, ready to fire back up.

I have most of my old P4 Prescott build single core hyperthreaded Netburs lol, not the original RAMBUS setup anymore, but the DDR1 version is more solid anyways, even have the Zalman 7700AlCu for it! It collects dust and will eventually be gone lol. Damn to think back to all those builds when I swapped out hardware all the time just to see how different combos OC'd and performed. The legendary Core2 era...IMHO.

But i have to give you props man, that was a good run as your rig. My current PC, the Haswell setup which started as a 4770K, is going on 5 in June (2013), so far is still a beast. Has only been in this current configuration for about two years (RAM and GPU upgrade), with a case upgrade the year before that to the Corsair case and PSU upgrade, 960GB SSD added the year before that, 4790K and second Noctua fan before that. Lol it just keeps going and going, but has ultimately resolved an OC'd Haswell/Devil's Canyon rig with a 980Ti that does everything I need....still! Wouldn't have necessarily stopped me before...but being a parent changes a man. :D

I am eager for a hopeful future 8700K or Ryzen 2 build, and already own a game or two that could take advantage of those extra cores...but I am budgeting for my server migration project which needs to get done. Been putting it off too long and just can't budget both.

Not interested in CPU upgrades at this time, so that time has not come but used to be about every 3-4 years. Only really want a GPU upgrades as CPU upgrade would not be worth it.

Now with this security crap going on with Intel and AMD CPU's i will wait until at least that's been resolved.

i7-2600K was a great CPU. I had twin GTX-570s in mine and I graduated to twin RX-290X cards with it.
I loved it.

My Phenom II 965 officially retired about a year ago from full time use/gaming with a $10 i7-2600 upgrade but the PII 965 did get moved from my main PC to my LAN PC before I finally retired it as it was just to slow, now its in my dads PC and will be used till 2020 at least before I sell it off.

Im still on my FX 8350 from 2012ish and plan to upgrade to Ryzen+ this yr but those DDR4 prices! ouch! over $300+ to get DDR4 3200Mhz 16GB kit just hurts abit to much.

Main PC CPU upgrade path for me was Athlon XP 1700+, AMD 64 3700+, FX-57, Phenom II 965, FX 8350.

Had a break between 2003 and 2015:

  • In 2003 my last build was a AMD Athlon XP 2400+ combined with a Nvidia GeForce4 Ti 4400 (which I still have:D).
  • In 2008 I bought a PS3 which I used until 2015 for gaming and a laptop for my studies.
  • In 2015 my first build after 12 years was a AMD FX-8320 combined with a AMD R9 270x.

i7 7700K
i5 4690K
FX 6350
FX 6300
FX 4300
Pentium E5200 (2 of these)
Athlon X2 4000+

I build my computers with the idea they will "evolve" through several upgrades before they need to be retired. The fact is, they get retired before they die in part, I am convinced, because I buy quality power supplies and set up good cooling in quality cases. IMO, the case and PSU form the foundation for years of service through several evolutions of upgrades. I also tend to buy what I call "scabbed over" motherboards. That is, not the latest cutting/bleeding edge (Read: most expensive) technology motherboards. But motherboards that are just shy of being the most current as these tend to still support several years of RAM and even CPU upgrades without breaking the bank.

The oldest computer I have had remain "in service" was my last XP system. I built it over the holidays in December 2001. It refused to die. In 2014, I isolated it from the Internet with my router and turned it into a NAS backup server for my other computers on my local network. Then in 2016 I powered it off for the last time when I built the system I am using now and the next oldest machine in line became my new NAS server.

We put Ubuntu and LibreOffice on it and donated it to a local church who gave it to needy family. As far as I know, it is still chugging along, over 16 years later. :D

^^THIS^^

Spend time finding a great PSU and Case, and you'll be paid back with years of use without problems.

My longest serving system was my P5Q Deluxe system (all components got upgraded so easier to list the motherboard). It started off with a C2D E8400 & GTX580 and finished with a QX9650 & GTX Titan. That machine lasted ~10 years 8 Years, but I'd kinda lost interest in computers until my 6700K build in 2016.

My 2016 build was meant to last me a few years, but because of a bad gpu decision (2x first gen titans in sli) that rig became obsolete pretty fast unfortunately. It still gets used occasionally as a spare gaming PC for when friends visit, it mostly sits there crunching and being used as a htpc. I replaced it mid 2017 with a Ryzen build with a 1080Ti. I put wayyy more money than I intended to into this build o_O (I usually try not to keep count!). It was worth it though, it's very snappy system, and quiet now that I finally assembled it into a case.

It's interesting to see everyone else's systems, some have lasted really well :D

Just built a Asus X99, still not using it though I did do the OS install. To lazy to swap it out with my X79 Deluxe, Smh no hurry. Installed my X79 about 66 months ago.

2500k lasted from 2011 to 2017. Only reason I moved on was because I got a sweet deal on the 7600k over the summer.
